Better cut all prices in half
At half the price of both food and wine, we would have enjoyed the experience and rated it as “good”. Instead, we’re disappointed and feel ripped off, despite the nice ambiance, the amuses-bouche on the house and the attentive, fairly trained staff. The quality of the food is good, but nothing to be overly excited about. A “catch of the day” is supposed to be what it’s called: fresh from the sea. The amberjack was certainly not that. Antipasti went down as uninspired, desserts were good. 5 x markup for a decent ‘21 Grüner Veltliner is pushing it; still at E 130 a bottle it was amongst the cheapest in the extensive wine list. Overall this feels like a money machine and not the gastronomic heaven as it is promoted. That’s too bad, as Portofino could use one.

We had such a spectacular dinner on the terrace at this restaurant that I felt compelled to write a review. Our very beautiful meal was faultless. The service was superb- understated but attentive. The staff knew the menu perfectly. They are young, but highly polished. The location is extremely special. Tables have a spectacular view of the super yacht berths, and then on to the town of Portofino and up to Castello Brown. We all gasped when we arrived. The food was all faultless- the Capon Magra, Tuna Ragout and Tiramisu were standouts. A number of recent reviews have commented on price. I wonder if these are people who have watched Stanley Tucci’s tv series and not realised how exceptionally elegant this restaurant is. We found the pricing similar to restaurants of this calibre and location in Italy. The menu was between 45 and 70 euro a dish for appetiser, main and secondi. It was similar to restaurants like Il Riccio Capri, and the Gritti Terrace in Venice- but with far more personalised and polished service, and Cracco feels less like a tourist trap and more like a truly elegant fine dining restaurant. I would agree with reviews that comment on the wine list being expensive, though the wine service from the sommelier was perfect. Whites begin at around 100 euro, and reds 145. The cheaper wines are- themselves- even very good. Cocktails are 28 euro, champagne cocktails are 45- this is the same price as most cafes in Portofino’s very expensive harbour. An exceptional meal on the terrace at this restaurant would be between 150 (without wine) and 200-250 euro a head (with wine)- very similar to other restaurants of this calibre in Italy.

Most importantly the food was so so. At $1500 for two full course with wine and water that is simply not ok. By far the most stuck up staff ever. You have to pay for you water and the cheapest option is $35 for Pierrier up to $150! The staff is pushy to have you order the best one - they asked us to upgrade the water no less than 5 times. The wine list is ridiculously over prices with bottles marked up 10 times +++. We would not spend $4000 on a bottle of wine, rather and overpriced one for $450 and it was brutally obvious that we were not liked! They opened the bottle and poured a good sized glass of the wine for them to taste, imagine if I bought the $60K bottle, it would have been a $6K pour at least! There are many better restaurants for reasonable prices and wine marked up keystone or less. The owner and chief lives up to his reputation of being a disrespectful hot head by training his staff to be the same. I have eat all over the whole in Michelin Star restaurants (which this one is not and should never be) that I felt more comfortable in. I was unable to relax and enjoy my meal with the condemnation we felt from everyone that served us or we were in contact with. You could cut the tension with a knife because we we not taking their direction. It was so bad that as we exited the gale at the door who was kind enough to open it and kick us in the rear as we left saying "Thank you for coming, maybe we will see you again; or maybe not"!! Spend you hard earned money with a group that respects you and welcomes you as a guest, NOT CRACCO that we have nick name CRACK HOUSE! And at the end you see they add a 10% VAT and basically DEMAND a tip - I left a $1 to let them know I heard them.

Good Food!! Nice Chef. Horrible service. Got order wrong, waiters would continue to forget drink order too. There are plenty of better restaurants in Portofino.

When I read the negative reviews, I thought they must be from uninformed tourists not used to gourmet restaurants. But Cracco Portofino truly deserves the poor reviews.. First, the positive. The restaurant has beautiful views and setting. Now the rest. Cracco Portofino desperately needs a new menu, chef and head waiter/maitre d on the terrace For first course, the restaurant offered two pastas. But both had raw shrimp. So unless you wanted pasta with raw shrimp, your choice of a first course basically was the $50 small bowl of ramen soup. Almost but not quite as good as and smaller than the $5 variety of a local Japanese restaurant. Then the main course offering was either fried amberjack-- called today's fish chop -- but basically UK fish and chips without the chips or grilled amberjack-- called lacquered fish -- but basically plain fairly tasteless amberjack. If you didn't want Amberjack, well . . . The grilled amberjack was served with an interesting looking salad but completely dry. Getting oil, vinegar, salt and pepper was a chore because the terrace head waiter treats any request-- like oil and vinegar for a dry salad-- as an imposition and because the terrace has only one pepper mill that they have to distribute among 8 tables. We did not complain at any time during the meal but the head waiter seemed angry or embarrased all night. We can't speak to the rest of the restaurant but the terrace experience was so disappointing.

My girlfriend and I went here on holiday. They charged us for three glasses of wine in what was really MAYBE half pours and then attempted to charge us for another glass. Food was good not great. No wonder they had only two tables full while other places were packed. Avoid it

I give it two stars, and not one, only because the toilet wasn’t overflowing and front of the house staff at least tried Setting is nice. We were greeted well. Went downhill from there Ordered a regional appetizer and as far as I’m concerned we never received it. What we thought was amuse bouche they say was the appetizer. Okay, fine. We’re idiots. Didn’t have napkins or silverware when whatever it was arrived and if that I’m sure I’m qualified to state Neither of the two people who had the lobster dish enjoyed it. The fish baked in clay was very good. Somehow they confused the seafood ramen (45 euros for the tiniest portion possible) with the tagliatelle I order. The only value in all that was that I got to taste a dish I didn’t actually order and it wasn’t worth much. The tagliatelle, which came about when the others were done eating, was enjoyable but a poor value, quantity-to-price speaking By this time, didn’t want dessert nor coffee. Went elsewhere for that. Anyway, bill came and the aforementioned appetizer was still on the bill. Pointed that out, to no avail. Paid the bill and got the hell out of there
