I took a group of nine to RIS last night and it was wonderful. We tried most of the menu items and all were lovely. Great service and a terrific wine list that was reasonably priced. Love this place!

Be the first to ReplyWe came to RIS to celebrate a friend's birthday dinner.
Never have I left what should be a celebratory occasion feeling so sad, disappointed and embarrassed. When we made the reservation we noted that we were celebrating a birthday. When we arrived at the restaurant, the hostess confirmed that we were there to celebrate a birthday and we were going to be seated in a booth as requested. We felt good and that this was going to be a special evening. It went downhill from there. It took about 15 minutes for our server to come and greet us. He was very friendly and somewhat knowledgeable about the menu, but his attention to detail and follow through was extremely poor. We ordered two appetizers to share - the kale and brussel sprout salad and the scallop margarita. Neither of these should take much time to prepare because they don't require any cooking. After 45 minutes of waiting, I asked our server if the appetizers were coming. He said he had put our order in right away and that they would be out soon. 5 minutes later they appeared. As they were put on the table, another server came to our table with the same two appetizers, but quickly turned around and took them away once he saw ours had finally arrived. The scallop margarita was good. The kale and brussel sprout salad was pretty much a plate of kale with very little of the other ingredients listed in the salad. Once our appetizer plates were cleared, we waited ANOTHER 45 minutes for our entrees. By this point we were so hungry and getting very frustrated. We had finished our drinks and weren't even asked if we would like a refill, although the girl who fills the water cups made sure we always had plenty of water. I certainly would have had another glass of wine if I had been asked, and maybe this would have made me less HANGRY. The entrees finally arrived, and we had no silverware. We had to ask for it. We ordered the snapper, tuna special and the cauliflower steak. We all really enjoyed them. Some of us finished our plates very quickly because we were so hungry, but the guest of honor was still eating. Pet peeve - the server tried to grab the empty plates while the other was still obviously eating. I asked her to wait to clear until we were all done. When the plates were cleared, the server asked if we would like dessert to which we replied "yes please, it's our friend's birthday." He eventually came back and again asked if we would like dessert and we said "yes, for the birthday girl." He took our orders and this time the desserts came quite quickly (thank goodness because it was 9:45PM by then). My heart sank when he brought the desserts. The ice cream was such a small serving. The one scoop was smaller than the cookie it came with. And to top it off, there was NO CANDLE in the dessert for the birthday girl. We had told the server multiple times it was a birthday celebration and putting a candle in the dessert is such a simple gesture that goes a long way to making someone feel special - even the most basic of restaurants does this. And earlier in the evening the table next to us celebrated a birthday and there was a candle in the dessert - the servers even sang happy birthday. And again, we did not have silverware when the desserts were served. It was such a disappointing evening and sad to say I will not be back. Definitely do not recommend this restaurant if you are looking to celebrate a special occasion.

Mussels appetizer was AMAZING - sauce was so so good! Service was really good, and the restaurant atmosphere was pleasant. My roommate got the linguine and clams and said it was tasty. Overall would recommend this place but would NOT recommend ordering the chicken milanese. It was just ok; there are better things on the menu.

Stopped by this terrific upscale spot during restaurant week. Some items did have an up charge but let your mouth experience the chef's innovations. It had been awhile since I had brunch here and I am so glad I dropped in. I have to say the top-end service and atmosphere made for a classy experience consistent with my prior visit. The setting is very clean with high beamed ceilings and a contemporary modern vibe. The space is neither small nor large with a mix of wooden tables, marble, stone countertops, and fancy leather booths. There were beautiful maroon floral padded bolsters on the wall and warm decorative lighting. Impressive sandstone brick half walls divide the seating areas and there appears to be a few luxury private dining rooms in the back. Most of the tables were full with a professional looking crowd and a few families. This is a legendary foodie spot and didn't disappoint. The house Sauvignon Blanc was tasty with a clean finish and reasonable. It came in a cute star etched glass. The dirty martini was fine but I wish the olives packed a more flavorful punch. You could definitely splurge on some heavy hitter wines if so inclined. Started with a scallop appetizer that was an amazing mix of ceviche and a tangy frozen lime margarita with jalapeños and the shrimp tempura. The shrimp was lightly battered and flash fried just perfectly cooked and coated with a nice remoulade sauce. For the main course I went for the whole snapper which had an interest presentation where the whole fish was curled around the plate with a cabbage salad in the center and the fish was lightly battered. It was served with a side of rice and soy sauce. The short ribs were delicious and made me think of my mom's roasts growing up. That was served with an au gratin potato casserole. To supplement we also tried the roasted cauliflower which had a few pomegranate seeds sprinkled on top. To finish there was pear sorbet and mango ice cream served with cookies. I highly recommend this spot and the food and it's presentation will make for great conversation.
Be the first to ReplyRis had a lovely atmosphere.
It also had perfectly acceptable food, but for the price point I expected something more. I had a small business dinner there with some colleagues - everyone appeared to enjoy their drinks. We got some appetizers to begin - most of the folks got the scallop margarita and appeared to enjoy it. I got the house salad, with "baby lettuces, Gruyère cheese, Champagne vinaigrette" - doesn't that sound good? There were radishes as well, I believe. It was ok. The cheese and vinaigrette were very light, so I mostly felt like I was eating a plate of lettuce. The really odd bit? Two pieces of undercooked ziti sitting in the middle of the plate. Glad I'm not celiac, and not sure why a really nice restaurant would make such a mistake. I should have pointed it out to the server, but because we were at a business dinner I didn't want to seem like a PITA.I asked our server whether she thought a side was needed with the pepita salmon entree, and she felt it would be enough. Well...not really. The salmon was delicious - perfectly cooked and with a really interesting sauce/accompaniments. However, I do think it needed some kind of side.We shared a cookie plate to end our meal. Now that was awesome - delicious chocolate macaroons, melt in your mouth shortbread, and cherry oatmeal cookies. Honestly, the best part of the meal. I'd probably give it another try one of these days, or maybe just go to the bar and have some cookies.

Decided to try this restaurant to celebrate my mom's birthday and was a bit disappointed with some of the service, food, and ambiance. We made a reservation about 2 weeks prior and were actually late by about 3 minutes, but when we walked in the host informed us that it would be about a 5 to 10 minute wait until our table was ready, which was okay but a bit disappointing. We then noticed that the host set a table off to the side of the restaurant, right by the kitchen/kitchen door, which would usually be okay for us, but since we had a reservation and indicated we were celebrating a birthday we wish the table would've been ready or in a better location. When we did sit down and ordered food, the food took an exceptionally long time. We noticed that a table of 3 beside us, who got there about 10 minutes after us, got their meal significantly before we did (we're a family of 4 by the way). The manager actually decided to compensate us--without us mentioning anything--via a free glass of wine/a dessert. But once our food did come and we finished eating, most of us were ready to leave (because of the long amount of time) and not overly impressed with the food, so only one in our party ordered a dessert. Overall, most of us enjoyed our meal though we would not necessarily come back--but my mom said she would to eat at the bar:) Their "happy birthday" display on the dessert was cute and we appreciated the manager noticing the less than satisfactory timing/service.
Be the first to ReplyWent here for a group dinner through work.
It is a swanky place. Several groups in the various private rooms with wine flowing and class showing. We had fixed menu options, and I had a salad that was fairly standard (not too big), the one vegetarian entree option (cauliflower) that was hearty but again not too big, and dessert (chose the chocolate mousse with raspberries but was envious of those who chose apple pie with vanilla ice cream). It was an enjoyable experience. I wish they would have put bread on the table to start since it took so long to take our orders and serve salad. Wait staff was polite and attentive. This review doesn't consider cost since it was paid for by the organization/conference.

WOW! This was one of the best dining experiences I had in DC thus far! I attended a private dinner here for a conference my husband was a part of, so this is a review of that, not the typical dining experience.Ambiance: dark lighting, fancy, feels very upscale. We sat in a private room for our party which was very comfortable and blocked out the noise from the rest of the restaurant and was perfect for our event. Food: I wish I had taken a picture of the menu to know what to order again. We started off with probably the best tomato soup (with a meatball) I've ever had, and I tried my husband's mixed green salad which was also incredible. I was blown away by both and probably would return just for those. Then we had our entrees, the chicken milanese (fantastic) and a short rib dish (my husband liked it). For dessert, we had the chocolate semifreddo which was also delicious. I wish the tomato soup was on the regular dinner menu, I don't know why it isn't! Service: Excellent for our party! Very attentive. The chef came and greeted us in our private room, which was also a pleasant delight! Overall 5/5 and I would love to come here again! I hope they have all the menu items that I mentioned above in their regular dinner menu because they were really all fantastic.

Terrible service, side dishes came long after the main entree- nothing like French fries and cauliflower for dessert..... came highly recommended and was highly disappointed.

I was responsible for hosting a private family dinner for 14 guests from out of town. I worked with the chef/owner Ris prior to set up the event, which was held in one of their private dining rooms. The evening was a great success. We had a 3 course meal with several options to choose from. The food was perfectly executed, and special requests were honored. The service was attentive and everyone had a good time and a delicious meal. It was a great evening.

It's quiet and everyone is about getting those cogwheels turning. The food is a really well put together. The service is excellent as well.

It is restaurant week in DC, and this is is one place that I have been wanting to try. So, my husband and I ordered, and picked up from the special Restaurant Week Menu. Ris did not disappoint. I had the Portugese Fish Stew , full of shrimp, scallops , mussels in a savory broth with toasted bread to soak up the broth. My husband had short ribs, with scalloped potatoes and green beans. Portions were generous and delicious. The 2 salads that accompanied our entrees were shared over two nights. Desserts were Butterscotch pudding, rich and creamy ,and an assortment of cookies, which we are enjoying on day 2. Too full to finish on day one. We'll be back!!

Came for restaurant week and overall had a great time at RIS but what this place is missing is ATMOSPHERE. Unclear if it's because the restaurant is in West End which isn't a particularly a going out hot spot but the energy here was really dead. Essentially empty on the Monday night of a holiday weekend at the start of restaurant week.Noththeless I really enjoyed my meal. The corn chower was great and chicken milanese was great. The chicken was just slightly dry but the acidity from the balsamic and tomatoes brightened it up and the potatoes with aioli were delicious. Also delicious was the side salad with arugula and prosciutto, YUM. My friend's French onion soup was also delicious and piping hot!The bread pudding is much more on the custard side and had a strong eggy taste but was still good and our wine selection topped off the night. We ended with espresso martini which were super pricey -- $18 each. Great drink but confusing pricing.Service is standard, nice and professional. If you're looking for a quiet spot with good food this place would be an excellent choice. Its quiet, and not overwhelming. If you're looking for somewhere with more of a vibe i.e. people, music, chatting, atmosphere, etc, this just isn't the place.
Be the first to ReplyI thought this place was just okay overall.
The appetizers were actually pretty good- I got the scallop margarita which was cute and creative and the salmon tartare- but that was the highlight of my entire dinner. The entrees were very average and nothing to write home about. The service also seemed very rushed which was odd.
Be the first to ReplyRis delivers solid from the kitchen.
A consistently good neighborhood spot the chef brings forward favorite staples (think Meatloaf Mondays) and chicken milanese. It's not the "it" spot in town but if you are in the West End it's a great bet. The crowd skews older so if your preference is a scene over good food this may not be the place for you. It's an expensive neighborhood with prices accordingly but the lunch specials are a good deal. They have outdoor tables but with lots of sirens constantly going by. And if lamb is on the menu, hands down order this! It is Ris special since 1789 and far and away the best in DC. The lamb alone is reason to come here and could go against any of the newer celebrity chefs without a doubt.

We were on a 4 day family vacation to tour DC and ate out every day. This was the destination for our last evening. It was recommended to us by a local and it was easily the dining highlight of the trip. The food was 5 star but the service was some of the best we have ever had nationwide. The manager and our server took great care of us and paid special attention to us.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious American-style comfort food with
Delicious American-style comfort food with French/Mediterranean/Asian influences. I'm not exactly the demographic for this establishment and feel a bit out of place when I stop by, but having been here many times over the years, there is no question -- Chef Lacoste and her all-star crew can cook their asses off, and this place as a tried and true destination for new American classics is criminally underrated.Pre-COVID, I was a loyal fan who loved coming in on Thursdays to order their steak tartare and market greens salad, rendered several meters higher than other salads thanks to the fresh herbs (dill, tarragon) and their house-made champagne vinaigrette. During COVID, I've gotten takeout, delivery, and purchased from their frozen pantry and farmer's market -- with each meal and thing purchased being a stellar and phenomenally tasty experience. You can really tell that there is genuine care and thought put into the ingredients, and the outcome has been consistently delightful. I appreciate that there are daily specials, which helps make me really look forward to Mondays, when they serve their smashingly delicious meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Yep, I said meatloaf -- that unglamorous and arguably antiquated dish of little more than a hunk of ground beef and bread crumbs made impossibly, delectably sublime in the hands of Ris's chefs. This millennial never knew heaven could exist in a meatloaf until she tried Ris's. Moist, flavorful, rustic in its crumbly texture yet fabulously sturdy, too, and topped with a savory sweet ketchup sauce -- listen, it all sounds unimpressive, even boring -- who goes to a restaurant to order meatloaf when there are fois gras, truffle pasta, swordfish to be had at other dining establishments in the world? But trust me. Other dining establishments do not have this. Ris's meatloaf wins, handily, and beats out everyone else's meatloaf, and, most other entree offerings in DC, by a cool thousand miles. You can't go wrong with their other offerings, too -- the frozen vegetable lasagna (which was such a treat to eat during a recent blustery evening in DC last week and made my apartment smell like a fancy Italian restaurant), their daily care packages ($15 for soup, salad, and homemade bread -- sounds humble, maybe even boring, but because it's coming out from Ris's kitchen, everything is elevated with the best and freshest ingredients). Their desserts are ace, too -- I recently ordered their homemade blood orange ice cream, which brought a little bit of summer to February. I will say: I did not much care for their spiced basmati rice, which was too sweet for my decidedly sugar-averse tastebuds, nor have I found the cheeseburger impressive. But please don't let my lukewarm feelings toward these two items deter you from visiting this undersung gem of DC.Good gravy. I didn't realize just how much I treasured Ris until I sat down and wrote what is clearly a paean to this amazing restaurant. But this praise is well-deserved. What a blessing and a pleasure it is to have the opportunity to eat Ris Lacoste's cooking.

Last evening's dinner, delivered by RIS with a bottle of carefully selected wine, was divine... Happily, I still have enough for another meal! Ris's Delicious Meatloaf is a longtime favorite, so I was happy when my group selected RIS to be our provider for our Monday night dinner. The reheating instructions worked well, and I am still dreaming about those mashed potatoes...good comfort food indeed. RIS was my first choice for takeout, many months ago, when quarantine started, and she and her staff never disappoint. Their wine selection offers some great deals, and you can also get frozen meals and produce to take away with your dinner. Highly recommend!
