*Discriminatory experience
I sent this to the restaurant previously asking for a response but as I did not receive one I am posting to help other customers. As a long time patron of Tio Pepe's my partner and I looked forward to our first Valentines's Day out to eat since the pandemic. Tio Pepe's had helped use celebrate every anniversary and special day for 2 decades with a special meal. We made our reservations for 5:30 and were warmly greeted when we arrived. We were sat immediately and when our friendly waiter came and poured our sangria I told him I was excited to order the paella. I told him I was pescatarian and asked for the delicious seafood paella which I ordered every time I was there. He took the order, told us it would take 30 min for the paella and we said that was fine. We enjoyed our sangria and enjoyed our appetizers. 15 min later the waiter returned to tell us he was very sorry but they couldn't make seafood paella. This negatively affected my partner and I because we were both going to eat the paella. I couldn't eat meat so therefore neither of us could eat what we had come for. I was understandably disappointed but gracious and asked if I could have the rockfish please. He said yes. While it lowered my standard of satisfaction to have to eat something I didn't want I tried to enjoy the evening. Then things took a turn for the worse. When we finished our meal, the paella still appeared on the check along with both entrees we ordered. I called the waiter over and asked him to please check the bill. He changed it after a few minutes. Then, on my way out I was surprised to see a family member getting her coat. She had been sitting with a Baltimore celebrity table in the other room. I saw she had the signature tin foil wrapped bird for carry out and she said it was seafood Paella. I asked her how she had ordered this when I was told they weren't making it. She shared that she "bribed the cook with candy" I could feel the anger and hurt rise in my body. My relative and I were both kind individuals who had dietary restrictions on what we could eat, but what? because I wasn't sitting with a group of celebrities or wasn't willing to bribe someone I wasn't allowed to eat one of the few things I enjoy most and was denied that but had to argue for it to be removed from the receipt? Simply stated, that is discriminatory and poor customer treatment. I felt hurt and offended. I won't bribe someone for something I should be able to rightfully receive. Either the seafood paella should be offered to everyone or no one. Special cases which exclude some from others is not acceptable and is offensive and discriminatory. I have been upset about this ever since our night out and can't understand why this happened.

Be the first to ReplyJust as Good as I Remember
I’ve read some recent reviews that had me wondering if things had truly declined at one of my absolute favorite Baltimore restaurants. The only way to find out was for us to experience it ourselves. Four of us had dinner there on Saturday night at 5:30. We had dishes that we’ve always ordered and some new ones. We had Black Bean Soup, Seafood Soup, Oysters with Crabmeat in Champagne Sauce, Escargot, Lunch Seafood Salad, Halibut, Soft Shell Crabs, and Duck. We also had complimentary Papas Fritas. We skipped dessert as we headed to see The Eagles at the renovated CFG Arena. Everything we ate was delicious and just as I remembered when we were last there prior to COVID. The staffing were all familiar faces too. We’ll be back in a hurry as Tio Pepe is a Baltimore culinary stalwart restaurant……….different than any other restaurant in town!

I am a Maryland native and have hit most if not all the "famous" destinations in our state. One that has eluded me my entire life has been Tio Pepe. My bride and I decided to change that last Friday night. We ventured downtown (yikes!) to experience this vaunted Spanish restaurant. As you probably know it is located in a rowhouse basement and thus you are entering a catacomb of small rooms with tight space and a low ceiling. Claustrophobics beware ! Not a problem for us however. I understand the décor has not changed for decades and it is starting to show. Our server Alex or perhaps Aleks was a distinguished looking gentleman in formal attire and managed a small smile. He presented us with menus and took drink orders. So far so good. It was after the drinks took a significant time that we became suspicious of the service experience yet to come. In a relatively short time we realized that our party of two was a complete afterthought to Alex and remained that way for the ENTIRE dining experience. Service for everything was S-L-O-W. It was restaurant week and their menu offered some great selections. I ordered off that menu and the bride who loves fish asked which way to go between the Chilean Seabass and the Stuffed Rockfish. Alex actually recommended the Halibut and my bride (who loves Halibut also) thought it might be best to take the gentleman's recommendation. Fresh bread arrived along with appetizers and we were off and running. The appetizers and my bride's salad were delightful. We used the bread for dipping into the sauce of the appetizers. We did consume what was served. There was never an offer of more. After the first bite of her entrée, my bride was very disappointed in the way the fish (which was a generous piece) was cooked. It was overcooked to the point of mush. It was served with a generous potion of sautéed green beans which were very good. We decided at those prices we were going to send the fish back. Alex NEVER checked in on our satisfaction with the meal so I had to flag him down in the dining room to discuss the fish. He apologized more than once and we told him it was not his fault as to how the fish was prepared. We asked to have it removed from the check and that we did not want a replacement because I was now finished with my meal. He removed the plate. Here's where it really gets uncomfortable for us. A few minutes later he returned with my desert and placed a "to-go" box on our table. We both looked at each other when he left and said what the heck could be in there? You guessed it !! It was the terrible fish! Now we are NOT enjoying ourselves because it has been a sketchy experience all the way around and we have to wait in anticipation to see if the fish is on the check? You guessed right again ! It was on the check which we suspected because of the unwanted "to-go" box still sitting on our table. I flagged Alex down again and told him that we thought the fish was being removed from the check and he said his manager did not approve the request. Naturally I asked to speak with the manager. A few minutes later Alex came back and looked in the box that has been sitting on our table for at least half an hour, I guess to make sure we didn't indulge in that nasty fish as an accompaniment to our desert. He then removed the box and disappeared . In what was to be his most quick reappearance of the evening he came back without the box and a new check with the fish removed saying that the manager now did actually approve it. We never got to speak to the "manager". My bride and I met while we worked in the restaurant business and we can never really even get close to stiffing a wait person so we actually gave him a decent tip. This was NOT the enjoyable, celebratory and relaxing experience we anticipated. In fact, it will always be memorable because of how uncomfortable and unsatisfactory it was. We WILL NOT return. Baltimore - you can have your Tio Pepe.

After reading reviews we decided to go to this locally iconic restaurant. Not a great experience. The menu looks interesting, but I was disappointed with my chicken/lobster entree. White bread and no vegetables. If there was a salad option, I missed it. The staff was professional but not exactly welcoming.

Twelve family members two nights before Christmas and it was fabulous. My generous son picked up the tab and i KNOW that, with tip and Tax, it had to be at least $2000.00. No one held back ... black bean soup (the very best), garlic shrimp, their gigantic filets, lobster/chicken, etc. Huge slices of their dessert rolls, after-dinner drinks and on and on. The service was excellent, and it was one great party. My family has been doing Tio's since the mid 70s and though we're now spread all over creation, a gathering like this had to have been planned by God.

Wow! I’m sad to say after going to Tio’s for many years it has really gone downhill! We went on a Saturday night and usually it’s very crowed by the bar and sometimes you had a wait, even with a reservation. They were not busy at all. We were seated in a nice smaller room by ourselves for most of our dinner. We started with red sangria and fried potatoes… both excellent! The bread was not typically what I’ve had, it was very dry and not fresh. However, went downhill from there as far as food. Our waiter, Oscar was outstanding. My friend got the black bean soup, and was disappointed because they use to pour the sherry in the soup in front of customer. It did not happen and she said she could not taste sherry, but was good, even though served lukewarm. I got the Gambas Al Ajillo… shrimp in garlic. I have gotten this multiple times and this was disappointing. It was in a heavy fishy broth, I could not taste garlic whatsoever. I also got the Ensalada Tio Pepe. It was so drenched in dressing and too much vinegar. My friend got tourdenos Tio Pepe. It was a lot of meat, she said it was good but a little dry even though pink, as there was not much sauce. It was her birthday so they brought her a slice of chocolate roll. This was a very nice gesture however it tasted dry and stale. The best part was getting Spanish coffee. We love the presentation and was very good. I’m sad to say, I’m not too sure I will be returning anytime soon.

It was a beautiful sunny day and I was so disappointed to enter the restaurant and go downstairs to what was a windowless basement. The service wasn't exactly friendly but I think that is part of its personality. The hostess was very serious but took us to a table and the waiter again was serious and older and very formal. The food was very good, I had chicken which was prepared very well and nicely spiced and added a tossed salad which was extra. My husband had prime rib which was giant and a great piece of beef. He added a salad at an extra price. We also had the artichokes and the crab meat cocktail as appetizers which were again very good. I just wanted to get out into the sunlight. I really don't understand dark, windowless locations for restaurants. I feel like I can't breathe but that's me. I thought it was expensive as well. Why did we go? Our companions had wanted to go since they saw it online so we did.

Tio Pepe's has been a family favorite since it first opened its doors over 50 years ago. It was and still is worth the 30 mile drive in to town. We were lucky to find street parking nearby. The classic table settings in the grotto-like basement were appealing as ever. It was good to see favorite dishes are still on the menu as well as new items and daily specials. Our drink order of Gin and Tonics and Canadian whiskey were perfectly made and promptly served. The shrimp in garlic sauce went well with the delicious bread. A special of blue point oysters on crabmeat lightly baked in a champaign sauce was definitely a special way to start the meal. The black bean soup was pureed but given texture by rice and minced onions. All our main dishes came with thin green French beans that struck a perfect balance in terms of bite. The baked grouper flaked easily and had a light and flavorful meunière sauce topped with parsley, shallots and garlic. The marinated pork loin was then sautéed with onions, peppers, tomatoes and mushrooms. The veal medallions were prepared with a red wine sauce, rich with olives and mushrooms. By family tradition we ended the meal with sumptuous slices of pine nut role and espresso. Service was excellent. Glad to see the traditions of quality food and service have been maintained.
