Faultless 10-course tasting feast
An experience to behold and cherish. The very small Ora (only 18 seats and you should book well beforehand!) serves a tasting menu regularly updated and changing, ours had 10 dishes. The serving started at 19:00, but all guests arrived as suggested promptly at 18:30 for pre-dinner aperitifs with options including champagne and Negroni. The serving took 3,5 hours and time flew by without anything feeling rushed. Using very Finnish ingredients and surprising innovations in preparation methods, each one was delicious and perfect in size. Often the weak point of a tasting menu is the main course, with meat dishes not hitting the same levels as preceding courses, but not so at Ora however: the main dishes of pike perch and particularly the pheasant were just perfect. This total consistency in quality is something to behold. We also enjoyed the pairing wine menu, another perfect score there. Of note: dietary restrictions are honoured, our wishes expressed when we booked were taken into account in a fantastic way. Throughout the evening the team was good humoured, relaxed, professional and all smiles. They clearly enjoyed working together under the Chef Sasu Laukkonen calmly and supportingly overseeing his team executing his vision. The chef took time presenting and explaining in detail the journey of development and philosophy behind each course. The presentations were made in Finnish, but Mr Laukkonen took ample time to visit all tables in turns so that English speaking guests were also told many interesting stories. Mr Laukkonen’s enthusiasm is genuine and compelling, great fun to listen to. One final point: all too often an open kitchen or plating/preparation area exposes guests to greasy cooking or frying fumes. This may be okay to the senses during a dinner, but it can leave hair or clothes needing a wash - which may be annoying the next day. This is not the case with Ora at all, the restaurant air remained fresh, again in line with this altogether fantastic experience at an excellent price/quality ration.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Experience for a Solo Diner.
They couldn’t have been nicer or more accommodating. I landed from an overnight flight, napped and came for dinner. I was out of sorts with the time change and not as hungry as I should have been heading into 10 courses. The food was amazing, but couldn’t finish it all so they made me a “petite” entree. The wine pairings were superb, staff kind and owner passionate/wanting to share about the food/sourcing. Please make this a stop on your trip if you can get a reservation!
Be the first to ReplyMost authentic and impressive experience ever
Amazing! Fantastic! This restaurant alone is a reason to visit Helsinki. The restaurant is the most authentic experience that I’ve ever been. The owner and the chef is just super! Not enough words to describe how fantastic the place is.
Be the first to ReplyBest experience in Helsinki. Fine dinning made human.
Starting with the place, the arrangement of the tables and the setting, with the kitchen being part of the common space, creates a cozy and friendly atmosphere from the very moment you put foot inside. The staff is just the nicest bunch of people and came to talk to us every now and then. The explanations and the storytelling behind each course was just as mesmerizing as the dishes themselves. There was something more than just explaining the complexity of the preparation. It was more like having a dinner with friends and listening to the anecdotes behind them. The wine pairing was excellent even when most of them came as a surprise and the food was just as good. The way they make the best out of local ingredients such as potatoes and mushrooms is a state of art itself. The whole experience was marvellous. There's no doubt why this restaurant is considered a gem in Helsinki. Simply the best dining experience I have had so far (also worldwide). Need to come back soon :)
Be the first to ReplyService 10/10, I warmly recommend
We booked a table a week earlier but the restaurant had to cancel (because apparently a staff member had been ordered into COVID quarantine).
Luckily we managed to make a reservation for the following weekend. The venue is tiny and intimate and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. The staff wore masks which I really appreciate.
The server messed up our drink orders and after first pouring us sparkling water (which we orderd) she continued with still water and my date had to correct her. She apologised and fixed the issue immediately. My starter had a hair in. Yes, a black hair. Again, the staff were embarrassed and prepared me a new dish immediately.
Because of their mistakes they didn't charge anything for my menu and treated us to rhubarb digestives. And on top of that they offered us champagne free of charge and a goodie bag of their garden greens to compensate for the booking they had had to cancel earlier.
The food was creative and a tad bit experimental but definitely a nice change.
This is what good service should look like. Despite the mess up with our drink orders and the hair in my food (which probably is a mistake a Michelin star restaurant doesn't routinely make) I will be visiting again because I left with a smile on my face and that's my number 1 criteria for a good restaurant experience.
Unique experience
Our second visit here. Food is exeptional, but that is not all. The enthusiasm of the staff ans exeptionally the chef is fantastique to watch and enjoy.
It is small ans cosy restaurant in a nice part of Helsinki.
Fantastic culinary experience
Ora is among the very best restaurants in Helsinki. It's not only great food. The chef Sasu Laukkonen creates a great atmosphere by telling about the background of each dish and by being so passionate about what he does. I can only give my highest recommendation based on several visits.
Be the first to ReplyIt is not only great food.
It is not only great food. It is a relaxed evening, it is a performance, it is entertainment, it is visual art, it is an example of creativity. The new concept where everyone starts the dinner at the same time worked very well. You have to go yourself and experience it.
Be the first to ReplyInteresting food, service not forth michelin
Hello,
Before I go to this restaurant I made a big search. I read about the chef, concept of restaurant and etc. We came on Saturday evening. The hostess was ok, but it was strange and unusual that the same person took our coat and served our dishes. The ambient was simple but nice and clean.
The food in general was interesting and authentic, the reason why I do not gave 5 stars is service.
The staff (except chef) were very relaxed, but not in a good way. The same girl who took our coats drink coffee out of the bar, in general we felt like in a casual restaurant, but not in Michelin starred. In the end of the dinner we asked coffee, the mugs were wet and a dirty, coffee was burned so I left it.
So, thanks for the nice food but I think you need to improve your service staff. :)
Am I visit this restaurant again? I do not think so. :)
Excellent food and experience
It’s a really small restaurant, you feel like having dinner in the house of the chef. The food is just amazing, definitely deserves one more Michelin star, but without the formality that is quite common in this restaurant category. The team is very passionate, and the wine pairing should not be missed.

Let me just say straight out that I usually don't like tasting menu restaurants. I often find their meals fussy, overpriced, and lengthy. But there are exceptions, and Ora is one massive mega enormous exception. The food here is truly original while still being genuine. The ingredients are completely Finnish. The staff is laid back but still passionate about what they are doing. We had a teenager with us and she loved it. And all in all, considering what you get, and that you are in Finland, the price is actually quite reasonable.
Be the first to ReplyExquisite small dishes
There are ten courses, with wine pairing. The dishes are excellent, and the chefs' descriptions of each are detailed and enthusiastic. Each course, except the main course, is non-reproducible. The creation and combination of ingredients is complex and time consuming. The wines are also non-reproducible, you have never heard of these wines and will never see them again, but they are good, and they complement the dishes in a way that has been carefully thought out. The wines come from small, family-owned vineyards in Italy, Spain, and Austria.
Everything about this place is impressive except the table arrangements. With such good food and wine one might prefer to look into the eyes of the significant other. Instead the guests are seated side-by-side, like birds on a wire, looking into the kitchen. Not sure why this is considered a good thing, but it could at least be improved by dusting off the jumbled booze bottles above the kitchen opening.
