This restaurant ropes you in with a fancy social media page and a good website, making you think you are going to a high end establishment with a minimum £40 spend and a £20 deposit per person. I paid £80 online to book this restaurant and my family and I were expecting to be blown away, especially with such high requirements when booking. Our actual experience was extremely underwhelming. We arrived at Rawsha and immediately noticed the decor which was a bit like a garish 80's hotel. We were seated next to some mirrors which were dirty and there was football playing on the TV in the background. The atmosphere came across like a generic pub rather than a fine dining establishment despite the decor.
The waitress arrived and asked if we were ready to order but we asked for an extra 5 minutes as we hadn't had the chance to look at the menu as we were a bit distracted by how different the place looked to what we expected. The menu was also dirty which is a bit shocking especially with COVID so we were a little bit reluctant to touch the menu.
We decided to be open minded and thought maybe the food would make up for the environment but unfortunately this was not the case. We ordered 4 mango melba mocktails, which seemed to comprise of what tasted like rubicon mango mixed with a syrup and large ice cubes and for £6.50 this was nothing special. There was no garnish on the drink and on all the pictures on their website/instagram there was at least a strawberry added to the glass.
We ordered the Rawsha special sushi and the softshell crab sushi as our starters and we actually enjoyed this. The sushi was a good flavour but the toppings were a little bit sparse. The sushi looked a bit messy, with the end pieces falling apart but we ignored this as the flavour of the sushi was very good. However, for a business that has a minimum £40 spend with a 12.5% service charge, I expect the presentation of the food to at least be top quality. The sushi had us feeling optimistic for our main course but unfortunately it all went downhill from here. For our main courses we ordered the dynamite beef steak, lamb cutlets and the teriyaki chicken. We were asked how we wanted the meat cooked and we ordered the lamb cutlets and the steak medium. All the dishes came with rice topped with sesame seeds. The rice was bland and the steak was overcooked and also very bland and nothing 'dynamite' about it other than a few sliced chillies on top. The lamb cutlets were overcooked and very tough and we informed the waitress who said "so what do you want me to do" to which we responded that it was fine we shall eat it but we wanted to make her aware that it was not cooked medium but it was in fact well done. The chicken teriyaki was the worst dish by far with watery peppers and bland chicken. There was nothing teriyaki about this dish with virtually no seasoning.
We booked this restaurant for a birthday meal but did not mention this as we wanted to leave as soon as possible after the mains and the terrible service. I think this restaurant may need to reevaluate their dishes and focus on perfecting one cuisine than trying to offer multiple cuisines with no depth and flavour to the food. It seems they are more focused on their online image rather than their reality and their paying customers.
