My NYC French Chef trained sister, her husband and I went
My NYC French Chef trained sister, her husband and I went here for dinner last night for the first time. We were Very excited to find an authentic French restaurant to try out! The bar was set very high and because of that, they didn't quite get us there, but I will say came very close. We loved the ambience of the place. Very old country like. Great date night place for sure. I had a gin martini with blue cheese stuffed olives that was fabulous! The olives and blue cheese were delicious! For appetizers we had the Foie Gras which was good but not great, the Escargot which was the best we've ever had ( very tender and full of flavor), the mushroom soup which I highly recommend and the French onion soup which was also good but just a tad too peppery. The homemade French bread was off the charts! And when dipped into the soups was oooh sooo gooood! Next was the salad. Make sure to get the crumbled blue cheese and use both dressings on your salad. They make a very good combo. Ok, so far so good but next is where the disappointment came in. I ordered the house special, Beef Bourguigon. I had seen pictures that made my mouth water and indeed it looked fabulous. The sauce was what saved it as it was delicious! But unfortunately the beef, although tender and fell apart, was dry as a bone! Way, way over cooked. I will be coming back but won't order that again which is ok because there looks to be many great choices. My sister had the Tournedos of beef with bearnaise sauce and it came out cooked perfect and the sauce was delicious. The last note I will mention is that the wine list was a bit disappointing. My sister owns a wine and cheese shop and she said the wines they offered were pretty cheap but were marked up ridiculously, to the degree we didn't have wine with dinner. C'est la vie.

Old school ambiance & super friendly host. We had a nice conversation with him. I think I just ordered the wrong thing (I don't eat meat...) b/c I thought the food was just ok. We shared the trio of pate (pretty good) & I ordered the vegan pot au feu. It was lots of veggies in a broth. The veggies were cooked to perfection, but it was just lacking a bit. I guess I also thought it would be more stew-like & it was just broth & veggies. We had the creme brûlée for dessert & it was very good. Not sure if it's the best I've ever had, but it was better than average. The salad that comes with all entrees was decent. Nothing special whatsoever. Literally just lettuce & salad dressing, unless you opt for the blue cheese for $1.00. I would go back to try something else. I don't feel like it's a very kid-friendly place, but great for a fun & intimate dinner.
Be the first to ReplyThe below is from the Pot Au Feu's menu.
The owners have apparently lost their minds. Arrogant jerk. Warning We are old school - if you are looking for the newest, latest, "next big trend" in food we are definitely not a place you should choose to be dining. Yelpsters, self identifying foodies and cry babies- please, stay away - we are not a place you should dine. Pot au Feu is not foodie friendly. Swipe left! Save us all the misery. You were warned! The rest of humanity is warmly welcome - bienvenue à Pot au Feu!

was quite impressed with Pot Au Feu when I went tonight. At first I didn't understand the hype. I walked into a random basement in Providence not really knowing what to expect. The food was exquisite, and the service was pretty good. Compliments to the chef!I was scared they were going to steal my jacket, but was relieved that I got to keep it. Ratatouille was good, no baguettesOwner called me a crybaby

Had a great experience with some girlfriends here for dinner. The online menu mentioned foodies beware, but as a self-proclaimed "foodie" I thought it was great. Got the Boeuf a la Bourguignon, which I lucked out because it was the last one they had available for the night. Super good with the cheesy potatoes they serve on the side. We also got escargot, which I was scared to try because I had only had it once at another spot and was a bit chewy, but definitely give it try. Loaded with butter and garlic. It was very good over all. I was pregnant at the time and got the French martini mock-tail and it really good as well. Have been making them at home ever since. The service was really great too!!

Simply put, the food is fantastic! We tried for our sixth anniversary, and enjoyed the service and food immensely. The only drawback was the heavy smell of and dust around such that my fiancé had to leave prematurely due to reactions to the dust.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service and a cozy ambiance.
We were so excited to hear there was a real French restaurant in Providence. The owner was so nice, chatted with us for a while and answered any questions that we had. The cocktails were good. The onion soup was tasty with a large amount of cheese. The 3 pate sampler was just ok. The mushroom one great, the fish one tasted like cream cheese and lox and the traditional pate was very dry. I had a mushroom and steak crepe. The mushroom, crepe and sauce was great but the steak was overcooked. My husband had duck, again the rest of the meal was great but the duck was very dry. I would definitely go back and maybe order something else like cassoulet or one of the vegetarian or seafood dishes. The veggie aspects of our meals were great.

The cassoulet a la maison was flavorful. The best meal was the Boeuf Bourguignon! It was amazing!! The escargot and Oysters were a great choice for appetizers. Where they lost a star was the dessert. Crème brûlée was good but not warm and creamy, the crepe suzette was cold and disappointing, it reduced the flavor of the brandy and sweetness that would have made it a perfect dessert. I love the ambience of the place.

Our server Claire was amazing, assisting us with the menu and recommending the best meals and wine pairing. Will be back, thank you pot au feu!!!

I was excited to finally eat at this well known culinary legend. I wanted to give 4.5 stars but the app does not allow. For my taste--- 5 stars. But french cuisine is not for everyone so to give a general review for everyone I figured 4 would be a fair review.A very cute, romantic spot. Feels like a hug being there--- with the red walls and decor--- dark lighting, one rose with a candle lit table Feels like you were are in a french bistro --- especially with the staff greeting you in french. The service was exceptional--- our waitress was well-versed in the wines and food recommendations. attentive but not overbearing. Trio pate was great--- mushroom soup amazing and we loved the escargot. Nothing is heavily spiced but cooked to perfection. If you like salty dishes this is not the spot for you. I noticed a review about the bread being like a hot dog roll. Far from it--- just not the kind of baguette you get from shaw's. This is true french cuisine. So important to know this is a taste you enjoy before you go..... if you do you will not be disappointed--- amazing.
Be the first to ReplyReally loved this place tonight.
Great lighting, quiet, attentive service. The food was just amazing. Didn't realize the history about this place being the oldest French Restaurant in the US until I decided to write the review, but it makes sense. Definitely coming back.
Be the first to ReplyI really wanted to like this more and feel bad to give only
I really wanted to like this more and feel bad to give only three stars, as I was in contact with the owner and he seemed very nice. I booked a table for 9 here last night to celebrate a friend's birthday and the experience was just okay. To start out, I was a little soured because I had reached out beforehand to ask if I could bring a cake for the birthday girl, and was told this wasn't allowed. This is something I've never been told anywhere, at the very least, it is allowed but just with a cutting fee. Fine, didn't bring the cake because they wanted us to have their dessert. I will say, the place itself is very cute and the atmosphere is great, but there were a lot of issues as the night went on. The biggest being, I'm assuming they are short staffed. It seemed like there was only one actual waitress, who was very nice and I'm sure just doing her best. We ended up being there for 3 hours total because everything just took so long to come out once ordered. I know it's a large party, but even when we just ordered drinks, it would take forever to come out. The waitress would come by periodically to check on us, and we still wouldn't have what we ordered the last time she came by... which in mine and my friend's case was beer and wine - not even mixed cocktails. The food had mixed reviews. I had the crepes and thought they were delicious, but a few of the others said their meals were just ok. Definitely not worth the time and price tag. When it came time for dessert (after three hours) and the waitress asked what we wanted, she was surprised when we declined, but at that point we just wanted to get out of there. Overall, it was just an okay experience. Maybe just an off night, but would I be in a hurry to go back? Probably not.
Be the first to ReplyThe whole dinner service was incredible.
Get the escargot, order the bottle of wine, you can't go wrong with any of the entrees, and make sure you indulge in desert. Small intimate atmosphere properly divided for COVID protocol.
Be the first to ReplyWhat an experience! Delicious.
Cozy. Attentive and friendly service. From drinks to dessert ot was just as you would wish!
Be the first to ReplyI honestly was really expecting more.
The only thing I liked was my drink which I would get again. The food was truly just sub par. The bread was hot dog bread, not a French baguette. The food was flavorless - i got the bouillabaisse and did not like it at all. We got the pate sampler to share and perhaps that was the only tolerable part to the meal (only reason for the 3 stars but it's me being generous). The price range on this is so expensive. I expected a lot and it was just awful.Would not go back and save your money.
Be the first to ReplyBest meal we've ever had in Providence.
The service was impeccable. Wine selections are wonderful. French Martini was superb. Starting with a cold salmon appetizer and the onion soup, we were off to a great start. The veal shank and scallop entrees were perfection. Savored every bite! And how often these days does a restaurant owner stop at the table to see if you're satisfied and to express gratitude for your patronage? To end the meal we didn't want to end, the chocolate torte was heavenly. A truly divine dining experience!
Be the first to ReplyThis was my first time at Pot au Feu and it was pretty good.
My friend loves this place. I tried the mushroom soup, beef bourguignon, dill potatoes, au gratin potatoes, steak and mushroom crepes, crepes suzette, and pot de creme. I loved the au gratin potatoes. The sauce on the beef is a bit salty and it is thick but the flavor is good. The other items needed a little more salt but it was on the table so no big deal. We liked the flavor of the crepes but it would have been better if the steak and mushrooms were cut into smaller pieces. Warm French bread and butter was a nice start to dinner. The owner came over and talked to us and service was very friendly. The atmosphere is nice. Overall, it was a good visit and we would return.
Be the first to ReplyThe oldest French restaurant in America! A space to host
The oldest French restaurant in America! A space to host exclusive dinner parties, events or take cooking lessons or maybe just a romantic dinner for 2.....They have it all!I don't think French cuisine and vegetarian go together in the same sentence. Esp. If you don't eat mushrooms too. That was pretty much how my dinner was binged on bread and a plate the nice chef put together just for me.The dessert was a shot of molten fudge. Small portion, great impact. I could eat a big bowl of just that. But if you eat meat I'm sure your promised to have a good time. The ambiance is perfect, romantic dim lighting feels like your underground away from all the hustle and bustle. Service was excellent and price is not bad too. Dinner for 2 about $50-$75. Highly recommended!

There is limited option for vegetarians but the place is known and famous for their mushrooms. The bread there is one of the best i have ever eaten. Note that they do teach you how to bake or cook if you are interested. The soup was great, my wife doesn't eat mushrooms either so we had limited options. The owner was kind enough to make something different which was a great service that he provided by being accommodating. The table was a little small to hold all our dishes. They do offer space for small office parties.Note it says they are the oldest French restaurant in USA.

The evening started with a delicious set of appetizers which included some pate along with french onion soup. We then both ordered the Boeuf a la Bourguignon and were absolutely delighted as to both the presentation and preparation of the dish. The flavor was superb and truly classic. We capped off the evening with a couple of sweet delights which completed the perfect meal. Outstanding!!
