Nice and efficient
Pressed for time I wanted to have a nice - but quick - meal that wouldn’t be in one of the fast food outlets at the station. Rails was great with fast and efficient service and the steak was also very good. Nice ambient and decor and a pleasant atmosphere for a quiet dinner.
Be the first to ReplyReally lovely valentines meal
We visited Rails for a Valentines meal. It was a set three courses with three options per course (which we could see in advance). We paid upfront for the food which included an alcoholic drink. They were brilliant at swapping mine out for a mock tail as I don’t drink. They had a live jazz trio playing - they were great and a lovely atmosphere. Our waiter was absolutely lovely - so friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. One of the best waiters I’ve ever met! It’s such a handy location to travel home afterwards if you live on a line out of kings cross or st Pancras. Would definitely eat here again!

I recently re-visited Rails after being convinced by the team there. I was pleasantly surprised to find a substantially different experience. Service was excellent and prompt. The dining choices were very good - enough to satisfy any palate. The general area is really lacking more upmarket dining establishments and I hope that Rails can continue to fill that gap. The team are working hard to demonstrate this, and it shows.

Since they changed the name to Rails this has shockingly gone down with service primarily to blame. A lot of the reviewers appear to have said what I am going to say but management are not doing anything! Their reading the reviews! Do something. I treated myself back in London after a month in Asia. Regret picking this as my first brunch of 2023! Breakfast menu was good with a wide variety of choices from porridge to eggs and more. Lovely restaurant. Dark wooden decor, quiet with a nice atmosphere. Clean. They were not even busy. Had it not been for service, I may have come back and given this a 4 or 5 rating. It was like the staff were on drugs or living in another land. They were pleasant enough but had no clue how to do their job. What worried me the most was that there was a total disregard for people with dietary restrictions or allergies which could severely harm someone if not taken seriously. I ordered a black americano to start with. I got a messy americano with coffee all over the saucer and cup as the waitress had spilt half walking to me! She then went to change it! I got an orange juice which I didn't order. I sent this back. The joke was they left it out for 5 minutes and then gave it to another customer. I ordered Bran Flakes with oat milk and got All-Bran with normal milk! Thankfully I checked. I don't have a severe lactose allergy but this could have made someone really ill if they did. The staff didn't seem to care when I told them. The omelette with mushrooms was nice. Well presented and freshly made but the omelette was really soggy as the mushrooms had released too much water! Surely the chef should have known how to cook an omelette with mushrooms. Another woman near me also got a breakfast she didn't order and sent it back! I asked twice for the bill but nothing. I had to get up myself and go to the counter to pay and luckily I checked the bill as they charged me for the orange juice I didn't order! After protesting they removed it. Won't be coming back for sure. Expensive too.
Be the first to ReplyNot a Patch on when it was Plum and Spilt Milk
Visited for family lunch. Very disappointing. Food was lukewarm at best and the turkey roast dinner I had reminded me of a school dinner and was completely tasteless. Another meal was an absolutely tiny steak with an extremely small portion of unappetising looking fries, which all looked as though it had just been thrown onto the plate with no presentation or garnish of any description (which isn’t unreasonable to expect at the prices charged). £11 glass of wine had to be returned as it tasted truly awful and the bottle had clearly been open for a while. It was also only half a glass at best. In fairness when it was replaced with wine from a fresh bottle, the waiter poured a very generous measure to compensate. Even the coffees we ordered after the meal were lukewarm. Overall very disappointing, overpriced, would not recommend and would not return.
Be the first to ReplyExtremely dissappointed
I booked what I originally thought was lunch, when I arrived I was informed that I was having afternoon tea, even though this was at 13.30. We had the tea, as Kings Cross was very busy being December. Afternoon tea was acceptable but not what was planned. Being a birthday it was very disapointing. Saying that though the tea was good.

After a relatively lacklustre welcome during which I felt, well. somewhat neglected, my experienced improved primarily due to great service by one of the waiters, Chris. He was thoughtful, interesting and relaxed, suggesting I move to a better table and engaging well with my guest and I. The restaurant is attractive although hard to find (it always has been, unless you've been there before), especially as it is still branded Plum and Spilt Milk outside, with minimal branding inside and a series of confusing entrances. The menu was short but and and, whilst not cheap by any standards, is reflective of a central London restaurant nowadays. Overall, I've chosen this restaurant for its location more than anything else - it has competition just up the road at Coal Drops Yard.so it needs to up its game - more folks like Chris would help.
Be the first to ReplyA very sorry state of affairs. AVOID at all costs.
For a restaurant in such a prime location - between Kings Cross and St Pancras stations - Rails should be a dining destination of choice. Unfortunately, the choice you should make is to avoid it entirely. Rails is the recently rebranded Plum and Spilt Milk restaurant, which is located in the Great Northern Hotel. This is a review of Rails restaurant, not the hotel. The initial welcome was promising. But we were soon to be underwhelmed. Our server arrived fairly promptly and offered us coffee. We waited approximately 15 minutes for our coffees. By that stage, we had already ordered breakfast - 2 standard items on the menu. Our coffees arrived after we had to ask for them (again). However, our food was nowhere to be seen. After about 40 minutes, we managed to flag down the manager who then disappeared into the preparation area but never returned. A different person arrived with our food - but the ask for well-poached eggs for my wife had been ignored. The server promised he could "return in 2 minutes" but my wife suggested he just leave it, but he was adamant. So, I had finished my food, and then 2 poached eggs arrived for my wife. During this entire time, the restaurant was practically empty. We had to flag down a person for the bill, and after a long while, a server proudly proclaimed that he had given us our 2 coffees. The 12.5% service charge (for non-existent service) was still there. Rails could be a fundamentally different experience, but this establishment has a long way to go to deliver on any promises it makes.

Really lovely meal here - staff were attentive and friendly. A little pricey but very good. Great for business meetings as it's very private. Would visit again.

Delightful, bright restaurant with an interesting menu and charming service. between us we had Dorset crab salad, Sea bream, Pea and asparagus risotto. We shared new potatoes and carrots and an Eton Mess (Etonians never had it this good). Evrything was faultless and the atmosphere calm and attractive.

Hubby has wanted to eat here for a while so our first opportunity to be child free we booked a table for Saturday night. We had a lovely table with a fab view of the St Pancras hotel. Service was swift and professional although not especially friendly. The gin infused gravlax with horseradish creme fraiche was delicious, the seaweed blini was more drop scone than blini so I gave it a miss! The scallop and leek starter was delightful. Roast monkfish with squash puree, sirloin steak with bordelaise sauce were excellent. We shared hand cut chips ( exceptional) and tender stem broccoli. A choc orange mousse and apple tart tatin were both very good and we rounded off with decaf flat white coffees which came with a delicious mini lemon madeline. Would happily visit again and all round good experience.
Be the first to ReplyLovely Breakfast
Had 3 enjoyable breakfasts here while we stayed in the hotel, would have loved to experience the evening menu, but the restaurant was closed during our Monday-Thursday stay, only opening at the moment between Thursday and Sunday evenings

Great very professional service from a very polite young man called Balazs who made us welcome after a long trip. Would return again.
Be the first to ReplyLunch with my sister
It was a long time since I had been here and my sister and I had a lovely early Christmas lunch together. There was no choice of food apart from the Christmas menu but it was good. The service was excellent and the atmosphere good. It was quiet, but this was due, I think, to people being nervous about eating out just before Christmas when the omicron variant was rife in London. We’re going back next month so it will be interesting to see how busy it is and have more of a choice of what to eat. We thought it was perfect for us as I come into St Pancras and my sister Kings Cross.
Be the first to Replyservice not great
I know it has been a struggle this Christmas with covid and restrictions, hence why we were keen to keep our table.
unfortunately it wasn't a great experience. we wanted to start with cocktails but they didn't have a menu. The server said that they had them all written down when quizzed about what was in them they didn't know, they said that they would ask the bar tender. this took ages, when I asked about our drinks the server said that there was only one person at the bar. so I asked if it would quicker if I ordered something else. which I ended up doing for speed we had now been at our table for 25 minutes
we ordered dinner which was great.
sadly the servers were maybe a bit bored as there were hardly anyone in the restaurant. possibly 3 other tables.
they were constantly clearing. even when we hadn't finished. Twice they tried to take a drink that clearly hadn't been finished. My friend asked for some more gravy which they got. Then when I asked for some they did not look impressed, but as stated it was not busy.
My friend had two classes of Prosecco the first one was on the flat side the second one was worse, which was clear to see we had to ask for it to be changed. The server said that they did wonder if the bottle had been open for a while !!
The bill came and we felt quiet strongly that the service had been poor so we asked for the service charge to be removed
New great place to dine with good service.
I met up with a friend at King's Cross train station and she suggested going to Plum and Spilt Milk for dinner. It is not a place you would easily find inside a hotel - a great hideaway with great ambience. We paid just over £90 each for 3 courses, a glass of prosecco and a bottle of wine between us - I highly recommend the scallop starter, venison main course and chocolate mousse. They also served me with great gluten-free bread. Great for a special occasion and well located for arrivals from St Pancras too. Thanks especially to Angel who provided excellent service.
Be the first to Replydelightful champagne brunch
Sunday morning, the dining area was pleasantly quiet. Its a lovely dining room, great service, and the food fantastic. Our cases and coats were quickly looked after and retrieved. my vegetarian full breakfast was traditional but different - home made baked beans, a very good sausage and very filling. what a welcome change! my partner loved his traditional meat breakfast. right on the doorstep of Kings x platforms, you can be on your train in minutes.
Be the first to ReplyFood good, service could be worked on
Food and drink was good, service ok but quite pricey for what it was. We had breakfast and the vibe was a bit dead in there, staff looked un motivated. Everyone walked in and asked if they sit down at a table or wait, wasn’t clear and staff wasn’t attentive if anyone did walk in. Shame but could be turned around easily.

What a lovely restaurant to have a long brunch with friends in. Great set menu with wide vegetarian selection, fine champagne options and a really nice ambiance. Perfect location close to main train stations. Excellent staff whom really took care of us.
Be the first to ReplyVery v e r y slow service
This place used to look great but now looks a bit tired. Lunch menu limited and very expensive at £15 for a veggie burger. Reasonable wine at £9, no draft beer, very slow service. Saw no Covid cleaning of tables etc. I would not go back.
Be the first to ReplyThoroughly enjoyable
We had set menu on Saturday evening and thoroughly enjoyed all courses (Trout to start, Steak for mains). The Violet cocktail was also really wonderful.
We were served by Veronica who was brilliant - very efficient, very attentive and knowledgeable in how the chef cooked each meal. She was very friendly and really added to the experience.
