Must see attraction when you’re in Kuwait!
Built in 1979, these towers are really the symbol of a modern Middle East… Overlooking the Persian Gulf on one side and a modern city on the other, it’s a great spot we enjoyed with friends and my son who is stationed here in Kuwait!

This is the visual landmark of Kuwait city and probably, the most prominent one. Also called liberation towers as it was made after the removal of the Iraqis from Kuwait.

If one would have to select a building as symbol for Kuwait City (and probably the whole country) then it would most probably be the 'Abraj Al-Kuwait', the Kuwait Towers on a promontory by the Arabian Gulf in the city's Sharq area. Coming by taxi from the hotel, I continued from here by walking along the Corniche towards Souq Shark and the Fish Market.
The Kuwait Towers consist of three spires of different heights. The tallest (187m) has two spheres on it, the middle spire has one and the smallest none. The two spheres of the highest one are open to the public. The lower and bigger sphere holds a water tank with on top of it a restaurant, a lounge and a reception hall. At the restaurant is offered a buffet for either breakfast, lunch or dinner depending on the hour of the day and thus with only one price.
For the viewing platform there is a different elevator, for which one has to pay at the entrance booth a ticket of KWD 3.250. Backpacks are screened. A fast lift takes one up to the smaller, higher sphere with two levels, both with glass windows. The lower part is fixed, while the upper part is rotating with a full turn every half hour. The 360° views from an altitude of 123m are superb. There is a café with glass top tables, but no chairs. Toilets are available.
The Kuwait Towers are a part of the country water supply system with about 30 more towers in the shape of mushrooms, with the water coming from two desalination plants. The Swedish technical consulting firm VBB with chief architect Sune Lindström was in charge of this whole project. Since the Emir wanted some special towers at the promontory by the city, it came to an architectural competition, which was won by Lindström's wife, the Danish designer Malene Björn (who passed away in 2016 at the age of 102).
Western technology here meets Islamic culture with white spires like minarets and spheres, clad with enameled steel discs in eight different shades of blue, green and grey, reminiscent of Arabic mosaics and cupolas of mosques.
