Anthony Bourdain famously unmasked this weekend meal popularized by "Sex and The City" for being the one that took the least effort and inspiration from the restaurant staff. Chef Niven Patel seeks to redeem this maligned meal by showing it can serve as a platform to celebrate, elevate and redefine comfort foods. Orno draws inspiration from the Mediterranean with dishes like a respectable Grilled Octopus and vegetarian-friendly, toothy falafels. But, they also look to America to reinterpret dishes like their spectacular version of eggs Benedict that comes with not only a textbook hollandaise, but also the most tender, succulent beef pastrami I've tasted. It was more like a seasoned slice of prime rib than the boring lunch meat restaurants usually peddle. But, let's face it. If you're out for brunch, it's because you want to both catch up with friends and likely nurse a hangover. It's (hopefully) the only meal with a fork in the road where you will either restart the party with the hair of the dog, or you will find the antidote so you can revive and rejoin the living. For the first case, Orno offers the open Moët option. For the second one, anyone who's been to Mexico and overdone it knows there's no better hangover aid than chilaquiles to soak up last night's sins. The version at Orno has lovingly fried totopos bathed in a tangy tomatillo and poblano chile verde. Top it with a poached egg and you're on your way to being on the mend. The restaurant is also big enough to house both the raucous and the convalescent in an attractive, polished, instagrammable setting. I can't wait to see what life dilemmas and solutions dinner has to offer at this fun, lively place that puts the "restore" in restaurant.
