This is a very small sushi spot, come early to get seats.
The sushi here is very fresh, love the variety of fishes they offer on their menu. I recommend coming here for the sushi and omakase. The staff is friendly, and restaurant is clean.
Be the first to ReplyIt's my favorite sushi place around my apartment.
Very reasonable price for the best quality of fish. A lot of the fish there are directly from Japan and they are so sweet! Recommended!

Decided to stop by today since I've been curious about the new ownership changed to see if the quality is still superb. It did not disappoint me, the service was great and attentive fish quality was still amazingly fresh. Definitely coming back again and glad quality is still the same as before.
Be the first to ReplyI feel so sad after I walked out from this place.
It used to be really good and authentic. But not anymore.
Be the first to ReplyA small cozy place.
First time visitor based on recommendations from some friends. You pick the omasake options they offer for the day. when you plate have arrived, they will walk you through the different dishes and recommend where to start. It is recommended that you take a picture before start eating so if you run into something you really like it's easier to reorder. Services are great, but there is a 1.5 hours eating time limit due to popularity. I would recommend this place but you will need to have a deep pocket for it.
Be the first to ReplyLong time Ohshima customer since 2012.
Sadly, today will be my last day as a patron of this establishment until new ownership or things significantly improve. The new ownership has brought a clear decline in the quality of food and options. They took out favorites like chawanmushi and live spot prawns (at least not today). The appetizers we had (octopus wasabi and shrimp tempura) were bad. They both tasted fishy, like they used old shrimp and octopus to make these dishes. It was pretty unbelievable, but even with the wasabi on the octopus and tempura batter on the shrimp, you can clearly taste a fishy taste. Omakase was not great. They don't serve the additional dishes with the omakase anymore (such as the grilled fish dish). The fish on the sushi was not cut evenly (some parts are thicker than others), and the some fish had a fishy taste despite the amount of salt and ponzu poured onto the fish. The fish was cut thinner than before, while the rice taste and texture were off (tasted slightly undercooked and not enough rice vinegar). The fish was so over salted that I drank about 4 glasses of water through the 10 piece omakase meal. The same was true for my wife and brother in law during our dinner. The pricing also went up about 20-30% with new ownership giving another reason to look elsewhere for omaskase options. Service was ok. We had a few moments of near empty water glasses despite the restaurant being less crowded than before new ownership. I'm not sure how long they can get by based on the reputation of the old restaurant, but long time patrons will be disappointed. The signs were there when we got there, as there was no line 30 minutes before opening on a Saturday (we got there at 4 and were the only ones in line before opening at 4:30pm). We decided to give it a go anyway and regret it. I am still giving the place a 2 star as some fish pieces were still good, like the cherry salmon and chutoro. However, even the cuts on those pieces were not very even. For people who have never experienced the old ohshima, it may be fine. However, it's a definite and obvious decline in quality from before that is simply not worth the money given there are now other options at similar price points.
Be the first to ReplyI've been coming here as a regular customer since 2019.
However, I'm sadly to say the overall quality has gotten unexpectedly low after my visit today. The quality of the fish wasn't as fresh as before, in fact, they tasted a bit watery. The nigiri rice didn't taste well and it was overpowered by the fish. I couldn't really tell the difference of each course because they tasted really similar, I'm not sure if they flavored with the same sauce. The quality is okay, but I'm just really really disappointed by how much this sushi pace has changed ever since they're managed by the new owner. I don't think I'd be coming here again, it's really sad for me to say it's time to look for a new go to spot!

This place is delicious and they really take the time to make amazing sushi I absolutely recommend. THIS IS 1 michelin star level sushi! (And priced at that level). The sake is also wonderful as is the ambiance. Don't let the outside fool you. Service was also great. There are better sushi places to be sure, but this is among the best in orange county and la county. Cheers
Be the first to ReplyCorrection, they have made it to the Michelin guide.
Have not yet received a star. They do deserve a star nonetheless.

We have been to this restaurant to try their Omakase but very disappointed as their sushi quality and tastes all below average. They just gave us cheap quality sushi with no uni and shrimp..We have been to a very nice Omakase restaurant in other city but wanted to try seeing their reviews. Seems like their chefs are Japanese but their Omakase sushi are just like average quality ones . We may not go to this restaurant again as we can not expect any tasteful sushi. Very disappointed. Their mixed tempura was good but too expensive compared other restaurants.

Definitely check it out if you love sushi and can get reservations at the bar... And if you have money. Made reservations for 815 but it was table seating. I personally don't enjoy too much raw sushi so I didn't have high expectations. The first bite got me a little disgusted since there was some really tough skin, along with some fish scales (top left of photo). Once we got to the end, that's when it got a little more enjoyable. The cod, toro and scallop for sure! Also ordered a blue crab hand roll on the side but that didn't stand out to me.. a little disappointing. Anyways, since everything came out at once, we finished the meal in less than 30 minutes. Total bill w/ tip came out to $170 for 2 people. Pretty pricey for someone who doesn't love sushi.. and for a short experience.

My sisters and I came in for a late lunch around 12:50pm, they close at 1:30pm and last call is around 1:15pm. It wasn't too busy, most people sat at the bar. We ordered mixed green salad with ginger dressing (large salad, enough to share between 2-3 people), shishito peppers (yum, not oily at all, perfectly cooked), yellow tail carpaccio with jalapeño sauce (it came with an oil and balsamic glaze, yum!), mixed tempura (light and perfectly crisp - sweet potato, onion, carrot, shrimp, shishito). Bluefin toro sashimi was so buttery and delicious, it came with soy sauce already on it, baby squid nigiri (yum!), and we ended with bluefin & green onion roll & the yellow tail maki. Service was great, they were attentive and everything was so fresh. I noticed the tables didn't have soy sauce so I'm not sure if that's the norm, they don't have soy sauce but we didn't ask. You do need to ask for a side of ginger though. Overall would be back and would love to try their omakase.

I love this place! Low key, great service, fresh fish at reasonable prices! So I was fortunate enough to have eaten here 4 times in the last 3 months and let me tell you they have really mastered there consistency. I thought hard about all 4 meals and the thing that stood out was the "consistency" of the freshness, the preparation and the service - so satisfying. They also have a variety of Okinawan style dishes that are very good, give them a try. I will continue to eat and recommend this place, it's such a gem, Don't deny yourself!

*Highly recommend if you're coming here for the omakase experience to eat at the bar.*I called on a Saturday right about when they opened and they had a reservation available at 8:15pm so my bf and I were lucky enough to get a reservation for day of. Apparently it's hard to get a reservation and other yelpers also recommended calling them when they open to make a reservation. We came at 8pm and we still sat at 8:15pm. We were never asked if we preferred table or bar when making our reservation but it seemed like other reservations requested bar so we got sat at the table. We knew we wanted to order the omakase as that is what many other reviewers raved about. We placed our order and it came out within 5 mins. I'm thinking because we sat at a table, the experience of omakase was lacking. It was all plated together instead of serving individual portions at a more personalized experience and that heavily influenced my rating. Omakase 3/5: MP for omakase was $70 on the day that we went. You can tell the fish was fresh and were quite big cuts but I felt some of the nigiri's lacked flavor. It tasted a little bit fishier imo, like the scallop for one. My favorites were the fatty toro and the black cod.Blue crab hand roll a la carte 3/5: very small and mediocre. Kazunori's crab hand roll is 10x better and priced cheaper. I wish I had better things to say about Ohshima since it's so highly rated but my overall experience was so subpar. My bf and I ate our meal in 15 mins and left...lol I've had omakase at Michelin star and non-Michelin star sushi restaurants and I know those definitely can't compare to this but I felt like the entire experience made me rate this as a 3, unfortunately. I don't think I'll be back.

It's really delicious~ I recommend the omakase, the ingredients are fresh, and it's a friendly place~ I recommend making a reservation before going~ There are a lot of customers
Be the first to ReplyWent there this past week with my wife for lunch.
The fish and sushi was fresh and there was no waiting for a table. The service was good and the place was clean. The only drawback was the price. We ordered a few things that were mp but was surprised by the price.

I've been hearing good things about this place, but haven't been able to go for at least 3 years! Finally came later on a random Thursday night and was able to get seated. It was worth the wait.We shared the pork belly, and each got the 13-piece omakase. The sushi was fresh and the selection was great. We'll def return if we can score a table to try their other dishes.
Be the first to ReplyWorst service today.
Not sure if it was due to the fact that I was a solo diner at the sushi bar. I have been here many times since they're opening this time I sat with my glass of water without service for 15 minutes. I stared at the sushi chef in front of me as he was frantically making plates of sushi for, I guess existing tables. Finally the service starts and seems to go well until I completed my Omakase and ordered additional items. I ordered Uni and live sweet shrimp. I got the $24 live shrimp soaked in soy sauce. This is the first time I've seen this at the sushi bar. Usually it comes with a spray of Yuzu and salt. I decided to take a bite anyway and sure enough it's just straight soy sauce with my shrimp swimming in it, the rice underneath it was soaked with soy sauce. wish I had taken a picture!! !!i sent it back obviously they should've been able to see it's not OK. Then they told me they did not have any more live shrimp, so I settled for the shrimp in the window case. Then the sushi chef askagain, if I want anything else... i'm like what happened to the Uni I ordered? This service was disastrous if this was my first time I would never recommend this restaurant fortunately for them I've been here many times with much better sushi service. Get it together!!!!!
Be the first to ReplyThe sushi was superb.
The service was very timely. The ambiance was typical and nothing special.
Be the first to ReplyI think it's the best sushi for that price.
4 of us went and we ordered 13 pieces of omakase for each person. First of all, all the sushi was so delicious and all the other dishes we ordered were delicious too. :) Overall, the atmosphere, the food, and the price were all very good!If you want to eat sushi omakase or haven't tried it, I recommend you to experience this place:)

So much talk about this "Omakase" experience here and finally had a chance to try it! There was a line forming before the place opened, thank goodness our friends got their sooner! Highly recommend getting reservations, seems like that's the best way to go! I was so upset we couldn't be seated at the bar, my bestie said that would be the best Omakase experience if we sat at the bar. Unfortunately, they couldn't seat a party of 4, which I have no idea why when we were going to pay separately and split us up if needed. She was kind of mean about it, but understandable, I guess. Overall, the sushi was delicious. It was so fresh and every bite was amazing! We ordered the 13 piece Omakase which was $105 dollars vs the 10 piece Omakase that was $60 dollars. The sweet shrimp & uni was amazing! You can have the shrimp head in miso soup or deep fried- my husband and I selected deep fried! It was delish! If I come here again, I'd probably try to make reservations for the bar experience. Sitting at the table make me inhale our food faster than we liked. I wanted to enjoy each piece while our sushi chef prepared the next... Next time...
Be the first to ReplyIm going to give it 3 stars.
The food was fresh and very traditional. The place is really small and kinda uncomfortable if you order a good amount of food. $250 for all this and it was 2 of us and we still were not full considering we are not big eaters so we went down the street to another spot to fulfill our appetite. Overall, the service was OK and they did make sure to let us know that we did not need soy sauce their fish was seasoned but they definitely needed some more flavor to the raw fish. I heard its a new owner so I'm not sure if items or recipes have changed over the past few months but I was not impressed and unfortunately we will not be back.
Be the first to ReplyNot as good as before.
The cuts were tender and definitely some highlights. However, most of the flavorings were too light for the fish. The citrus salt pieces didn't have enough salt to enhance/amplify the citrus and thus the fish. They don't put nearly enough wasabi as they used to. Sushi needs wasabi to kick up the natural taste. In this case it was hardly there. The blue crab hand roll also wasn't as creamy as I've previously had here and no roe in it. I think the biggest upset is no prices are shown anywhere. Once you're done eating, they ring you up without showing you an itemized receipt. So they could've charged you for anything at any price. Got 2x 10 piece omakase + 2x uni + 2x toro + 2x blue crab handroll = $221 total without tip. This feels way too much if what I read on other reviews is true that the omakase is $60 per. My friend that ate here a few days ago had same order for $188 without tip. Why such a big difference in a few days? I'm sad to see this place have such a change. This was absolutely my fav sushi place and now...I would say skip, especially given the price. The value for price ratio is no longer there.

Got the Omakase and more than half of the fish were extremely fishy. My wife couldn't even finish eating it. On top of that, the sweet shrimp I ordered was $40 for TWO PIECES. I know I should've asked what the MP was before ordering but I've never paid more than $25 for sweet shrimp (even at high end places) and never been to a place where just two pieces of sweet shrimp is $40 so I did not expect it to be that much at all. Also, no draft beers. Everything is from the bottle. I don't really see what the hype is about this place. This is just another of one those mediocre sushi places in the OC.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible service by new owners especially the lady.
She was quite rude when I asked about their specials, she didn't acknowledge me and just walked away in a hurry. The food and service are just not the same since they changed ownership. The sushi isn't worth the price for the poor quality.
