More misses than hits
I was very much looking forward to O Boufés as it is next door to its sister 2 Michelin Star restaurant, both under the same owner and chef. O Boufés is the bistro version so cannot be reviewed as if it has the stars. Nevertheless as the main restaurant had featured on a recent BBC food programme I expected the bistro to be pretty high quality.
The menu is very small. Fair enough. I chose an ‘Ox Tartar’ which came with hazelnuts and a light dashi which was more of a dressing. The taste was very nice and I would have enjoyed it a lot if it had not come in a small black bowl making it difficult to get at....knife and fork handles pointed to the ceiling and also there was far too much for a starter....which I agree isn’t the worst of criticisms, but it does rather deaden your appetite. I couldn’t finish it all.
For main I ordered a salmon trout which came in a light bechamel and some rather under steamed green beans. The skin wasn’t crisp and there was no hint of seasoning. Basic errors. But the worst part it came in the exactly the same steep sided black bowl making it cumbersome to eat and unattractive to look at.
This place seems to specialise in ‘natural wines’ which are the worst type of wines there are by far! I had a glass of a mixed white variety that included muscatel. Although I accepted it at the sipping trial, it definitely didn’t grow on me. When there are so many beautiful Austrian wines I cannot see the point of offering ‘naturals’ which in my experience are always pretty awful.
I’m afraid to say, given the pedigree of this establishment, the toilets were nothing short of disgusting with a heavily brown stained bowl.
I have to say the service was good at all stages. It was a great pity that the food, wine and tableware were not.
Wine more interesting.
Great evening, very interesting and different wines, by the glass so we tried a few. Food good but presentation rather ordinary eg cheese platter for starter.
Would definitely go again.
Expected more
Being related to a 2 Star Michelin restaurant, we had expected a really good meal. Whilst the food was good, it didn’t wow us. We tried the pork schnitzel and a prawn dish. The pork wasn’t as good as Figlmueller (and was much more expensive). The prawn dish was much smaller than most of the other mains we saw and was essentially some prawns in tomato sauce. They served some interesting organic wine. We found the meal a bit expensive for what we got.
