Lovely impromptu night at Northcote.
Ribble valley is such a nice county in Lancashire with wonderful restaurants and retreats, and Northcote is a great addition to that. We didn't stay the night but we did have dinner here. The service was pretty good from start to finish. They were knowledgeable about wine and pairings and kept plate progression at a consistent pace. The service team seemed to be distracted towards the end of the meal and placed a lot of emphasis on cleaning (way before we were finished with dinner). I think that shouldn't be obvious to those dining so that took a hit on the quality of the meal. The food was overall very tasty. The maran egg and scarlet prawn were my favourite dishes, especially the egg/potato chip combination, which was one of the most creative ideas I've seen in a while. The bartender needed a bit more knowledge on spirits I think, and ran out of the spirit we selected. I would say I don't love the location of the hotel, as it's right off the main road and it takes away from the ambiance. Also there are two very large dumpsters right in front of the hotel. Seems like very poor placement. All in all however, this is a great night out in Ribble Valley, and likely a nice stay as well!

This is not a Michelin Star restaurant nor a Relais and Chateaux level property. Not even close.Michelin Star? You must be kidding me. Hiramatsu in Paris is a Michelin Star restaurant. This is a joke. I have never left 3 of my tasting dishes uneaten before in any restaurant, let alone one with a Michelin star. This time I barely touched my meal. For a location surrounded by great local goosnargh poultry, game, produce and supplies that England and Scotland can provide - for some reason the entire menu was Japanese infused, and not in a good way. At all. Everything that came after the 'Wagyu beef tartar with Sticky rice' was disgusting. Neither my wife nor I ate it. Not a thing. Scallops in Japanese miso broth with seaweed? No. Boney fish wing on fermented mushroom paste? No. Cold Venison that came with a piece of Liver so old and overcooked you needed your wine to get it down? No. Then came dessert. We ate the dessert, but at this point we had saved ourselves for this meal, hadn't eaten since noon and would have likely paid you 20 quid for a Big Mac. Now, when you send 3 uneaten plates in succession back to the kitchen barely touched - normally the waiter/ess or chef make note and comment. Especially at the better restaurants. Its a matter of pride to the chef. Not here. They didn't ask and certainly didn't care. I would have washed my sorrows down with the wine pairing, but at mostly 2014/5 vintages - it would have taken a few bottles since its barely been more than grape juice for more than 3 or 4 months. This was 320 pounds for two, and a complete waste of a weekend, a dinner and the money. Seriously, it was a total loss. Breakfast? Meh. Substandard and prepared by someone who likely worked at the Services off the M6 before he came here. Again, even with Bury black pudding available - these folks went with Irish. In a tube you squeeze onto your plate. Michelin star? Again - go eat at Hiramatsu, another Michelin '1 Star' restaurant, then come back to Ribble Valley Ginza Ward and tell me the Northcote deserve theirs. They don't. The Hotel? 350 pounds a night for two single beds pushed together, a tiny TV, a view of an overfilled dumpster in their parking lot and bed sheets more akin to a Premier or Holiday Inn, and you get my drift. They dont even have down pillows, ffs. The bathroom is lovely, so is the shower - but the fact that this place somehow got accepted to the Relais and Chateaux brand speaks volumes for the desperate position the french must be in, for this is no Relais and Chateaux. Not by a wide margin. The Ellerman House in Capetown is a Relais and Chateaux. The 'Le Manoir' in Oxfordshire is Relais and Chateaux. I have no idea where this belongs but this is a substandard brand imposter yet priced similar. Go stay at the Ellerman or Le Manoir, just for a night. Then tell me Northcote is Relais and Chateaux. It's not. The fact that we picked both this hotel and the Ribble Valley as a destination, then travelled all the way to rural England to experience this only made it worse. The fact that we paid 320 pounds for a disgusting dinner, followed by 350 pounds for a mediocre room with a badly prepared breakfast only added insult to injury. We had a two night reservation for the Christmas break, but cancelled it the very day we got back to the US. Never. Again.

A special venue for a special occasion and worth the 1 hour drive to east Lancashire. Northcote probably should have featured on Steve Coogan's 'The Trip' as its one of the best restaurants in this part of the north west, and fully deserved of its Michelin star in my opinion. Canapรฉ of Lancashire cheese biscuits with onion mouse, washed down with fragoli prosecco was a nice start. Service from front of house staff to all waiting staff is of an immensely high standard, the perfect balance of attentive and friendly. We picked from the seasonal menu which is good value at around ยฃ33 for 3 courses. I had the fish terrine to start, a compiled by a few pieces of freshly baked delicious Lancashire cheese bread. Wine was superb and excellent value. A 2012 The Red from Stellenbosch was around ยฃ34 and worth every penny. Main course of hanger steak (onglet in France) - the part of the cow below the fillet - was flavoursome and had a meatiness. Melting ginger pudding was fairly pricey from the a la carte at ยฃ15, but tasty nonetheless. ย Owner and chef, Nigel Haworth, popped round the lunchtime tables for a quick chat. Masterchef the professionals has just filmed here, to be aired in October. This place deserves to be featured, and should be enjoyed by those throughout the UK when in the region.

Be the first to ReplyFor Christmas, I gave my lovely partner a weekend away
For Christmas, I gave my lovely partner a weekend away (with two tasting menus) at Northcote. We cashed it in over the weekend, and we had a lovely time. It's a bit of a trek (as we live in London), but it was well worth it! Our hotel room was quite nice, lots of red furnishings, and a comfortable bed and pillows. Delicious complimentary drinks were included in our in room fridge.Friday night was a five-course tasting menu. It started with canapes and champagne in the lounge. (Quite a strange experience for me, having it in the lounge!) It was quite a creative menu, as the first course was salmon with crispy ginger and a ginger and lemongrass marshmallow on top. Delicious! One of the best courses of the weekend. Other good courses were the forages soup and the braised pig cheek with caramel crackling. The wine pairings went quite nicely so I would highly recommend them. Breakfast was included in our stay, and the first morning we had a full English with poached eggs, bacon, sausage and black pudding. Throw in some crumpets and it was a deliciously typical English breakfast. Not-so typically English we each had a basil Bloody Mary with breakfast (and they were delicious)! That evening was a seven course tasting menu. Again the pairings went well, and we got to try some new and interesting wines. Some of the stand out courses were pigeon curry and mango chutney (definitely unusual flavors for what I was expecting from the restaurant), Beef tartare with a marrowbone toast (awesome, never can go wrong with marrowbone), and the venison. Dessert this night was a banana mousse in a banana peel with nuts and caramel corn and coffee ice cream. We had cheese both nights, and impressively they had a few different cheeses the second night. Pretty much all the cheeses we tried were delicious. If you're heading up North and wanting a nice weekend away, I can totally recommend Northcote manor! Delicious food, nice people, great cocktails, great rooms, and a relaxing time.

We stayed here on a whim just before Xmas as part of a gourmet break which was 1 night for 2, with a 5 course meal + 1/2 bottle of champagne for ยฃ285. This is quite pricey, but the food is Michelin starred. The meal by itself would have been ยฃ55pp. The house is just set back from a main road and doesn't appear that grand from the outside. We were welcomed and shown up to our gorgeous room by the staff who helped us with our luggage and were really friendly. The room had a huge comfy bed as well as a fridge full of complimentary soft drinks. Our only problem was that the room was very hot during the night and we couldn't figure out anyway to cool it down. The view in the morning was spectacular with the Lancashire countryside covered in snow. Magical.

It may not look like the best hotel out there but it really is good for value. This hotel does not look good from the outside but inside its really clean.I came here when my house was getting refurbished. I ended up staying here two nights,The Hotel service was quite decent we got our breakfast and food always on time. Inside in the rooms we had a big television the beds also were big.The room enviroment was clean we also had the pleasure of having our own shower as well in the hotel. Overall it was worth coming here but the prices here are too expensive.
