Average Food and Above-Average Rudeness
I've never encountered so much rudeness from a restaurant in all my life! First off, the hostess was most likely either drunk or on a high dose of prescription pills. She told us when we got there that there would be a 35 to 45-minute wait, even though we had reservations. We told her that was fine because the place was busy that night. Even though we were fine with it, she became defensive and rude, as if we were arguing with her or verbally attacking her, which we were not. She did seem impaired. Others waiting said the same thing. When we were seated, our waitress was absolutely hateful and made mean faces at us. I have no clue as to why. We tried to be nice to her, but she wasn't having it. She kept reminding us that there was a two-hour limit on the table within the first 10 minutes that we were seated. When our food came out, it was just dropped onto the table, without a word said. We just sorted it out and ate. The food wasn't bad, but it was nothing great. We definitely didn't want to hang around long enough to reach that two-hour limit. It was too loud in there, and the arrogance was THICK! How this place has been nominated twice for a James Beard Award is beyond me!
Be the first to ReplyWorse service and rating therefore poor
Food great however never had such bad service and the experience was therefore not what was expected from a #1 restaurant. Actually I should have been more observant, as the first wine pour was lower than the second. We are visiting from NYC so therefore more disappointing! The hostess did try to make amends by subtracting our 2 wine and 2 beer! We have of course great experience in dining both at home and internationally!
Be the first to ReplyNancy cakes are manna from heaven
We dined here in a party of three. The wait staff is skilled and well mannered. The food is original and tasty and well presented. The atmosphere is nice, two rows of tables in front of the kitchen, 50’s milk-glass pendant lights and eclectic nick nacks. The Nancy cakes are like refined, elevated cornbread pucks with heavenly cultured butter and salty trout roe on top …I dream about them still. The octopus is great, the beef and butter dumplings are delicious. The capellini and poached swordfish is very nice. Pass on the corn crepe cake with white chocolate mousse; it doesn’t live up to the rest of the menu. I can’t wait to go back!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed! And mystified at the good reviews
We finally managed to go to this restaurant, which we’ve wanted to do for a long time. The drinks were nothing special. Ambience was okay. The starters (Nancy’s cakes and spicy beef dumplings) were excellent, and we looked forward to the rest of the meal. Alas, it was downhill from there. The Capellini with poached swordfish was mildly flavored and nothing to crow about. The wood grilled half chicken was generous, but the breast meat was too fleshy and did not have any flavor. The Parmesan cheesecake tasted exactly like what it was. A strangely flavored cheesecake with honey and black pepper on top. The Watermelon Kombucha granita was a bit better, but marginally so. Tasted like flavored ice chips with candied pieces thrown in. Service, though efficient, was detached and restaurant staff generally had a markedly morose demeanor. Kind of mystified at the high ratings. Maybe we missed the good days….

The food is excellent. The wait staff was wonderful. The management obviously does need patrons to be return guests. My husband is visually impaired. He was scolded by Christina (manager) when he was using his phone light to read the menu. Really? Who yells at someone at their restaurant for wanting to see the menu? Selling food is their business. To sell the food, you need to sell the restaurant. Epic fail.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the very best all around dining experiences in Houston.
Husband and I just had a the most amazing experience at Nancy's Hustle. From the Hostess (entrance) to the wait staff and bartenders. Like being in the East Village but you are in Houston. We enjoyed the Nancy Cakes, Beef dumplings, Parmesan Croquettes, Chicken and Shrimp. Best flavors, not to much just perfect. Each plate was plated so well and presented by wonderful servers. Our table was serviced at just the right time between each plate with no rushed feeling. We had mocktails and they were terrific.
Be the first to ReplyGirls Night was Perfection Here!
My friends and I ate here last night and we're still talking about it! We ordered the Nancy cakes, pickle party, fries, butter-braised turnips and the tartine--every bite of every dish was sheer perfection. We were especially glad we ordered the pickle party--the bright acidity of that dish was a nice counterpoint to the heavier dishes, and we found ourselves alternating between the dishes for that reason. Another admiration point--usually whisky doesn't pair well with food, but I ordered a whisky/sherry/port cocktail and it paired wonderfully, like a fruity counterpoint cutting through the other dishes. We ended with the buttermilk sorbet with seseame crumble--after the first bite, we all looked at each other and fell silent. Amazing--a suprisingly delicious, layered dessert. We were so glad we stopped in for girl's night, and all of us swore we'd be back with the husbands.
Be the first to ReplyOh those Nancy cakes!
I am NOT a vegetarian, but if I had to be, this is where I would eat. We ordered four dishes: okra, eggplant, squash and the famous Nancy cakes, which was the highlight of the meal for me. It was heaven on a plate and not to be missed. The entire experience was delightful.
Be the first to ReplyTruly ExtraOrdinary & Exceptional…..
I have eaten in top end restaurants all over the world and am not usually moved to place a review but Nancy’s Hustle deserves the praise. 7 dishes - every one phenomenal and truly surprising - to echo the comments below you read the menu, seems limited, can’t really fathom how it will be presented and what the taste experience will be - worry not, whoever is in the kitchen is a culinary genius - I hate sweetcorn, the grouper with the sweetcorn purée was fantastic - so go for it, take a chance - it just works!!! Then dessert - be aware big servings, leave room - cheesecake and black pepper honey??? It just works!!! Etc Etc ….& by the way the staff are great, the ambience relaxed and it doesn’t bust the bank. One of best. Thank you.
Be the first to ReplySuper cool restaurant
Nancy’s Hustle was one of the neatest restaurant I have been to and my favorite in Houston. Parking is around back or on the street. We were sat immediately and out server was attentive and experienced with menu. The restaurant was dimly lit and candles on every table making for an intimate environment and feeling. The attire was pretty mixed with some folks wearing shorts and casual t-shirts. But as the night went on, people were coming in dressed nicer. The chicken was very moist and buttery. The burger was our favorite plate with the crunchy English muffin and lots of melted cheese. The grilled summer squash was savory and freshly made you can tell. I would recommend making a reservation as they can get very busy.
Be the first to ReplyIt’s an Experience not just great dining!
This is so much more than just a great place for us foodie's - its an entire experience! Beautiful people ( I mean REALLY beautiful people. Houston's best!), amazing music played from a reel-to-reel tape deck up front, crafted designer cocktails and a menu that will knock your designer socks off. It's truly that good. Order your cocktail and go over the menu. It changes often so check with your server for a wonderful description of each item. Choose a few bites to share and try an entré if you're still hungry. Bottles of wine are nicely priced too. We shared all that we ordered. After drinks, we started with Beef and Butter dumplings with sauerkraut , yogurt and dill (amazing!) and the Nancy Cakes with cultured butter, trout roe & chives (youHAVE to order this!) and actually found room for one more dish - the Lamb Tartare. It's prepared way beyond what you'd expect ... with green olives, almonds, spices and creamy sauce on the side along with some sesame crusted flat bread. Visual delights. Full emotional experience. Audio delights. Excellent staff (well trained and attentive). A taste bud pleasure ride. Smiles and surprises all evening long. You gotta go!
