Finally!
I am SO glad that I had the opportunity to eat at Monk. We were in Japan on holiday last year, but Monk was closed during our time in Kyoto, so we were not able to go. This past January, I was in Japan on business and was able to book dinner at Monk with two work colleagues. The setting of the small restaurant was gorgeous, as was the building. The best word that comes to mind when describing our experience is "serene." The staff was lovely and the food was simply exquisite. The variety of flavors, colors, and textures was amazing, from the bread and pizza, to the local vegetables and herbs. YUM! It was also great to speak to Chef Yoshihiro Imai, who was gracious and welcoming.

Incredible experience with a delicious vegetable-centric tasting menu. We started with pizza dough and nappa cabbage soup followed by carrots with mozzarella, yellowtail with daikon, sunchokes with mustard flowers, a course of different roasted vegetables, spanish mackerel with spinach, a pizza course (we tried 4 different options: the bait fish, pork ragu, margherita, and chrysanthemum, you get 1 pizza for two people and each half can be a different topping/flavor) and finished with a persimmon dessert with rhubarb mousse and dill sauce. We enjoyed every course, but our favorite were the sunchokes. They were absolutely delicious and we wanted another portion after finishing ours. The only dish we did not enjoy was the yellowtail. It was a bit fishy and smokey for our liking. The persimmon dessert was a great surprise, we never had dill in dessert before and it was delightful. Overall it is such a cool and unique dining experience. There are only 14 seats in the restaurant (you need to make a reservation well in advance) and you get to interact with the staff and Chef Imai. Watching them work is awesome (definitely book a counter seat) and the portions and courses leave you full. Definitely worth the price! A unique and delicious dining experience you won't forget.

Sublime flavours and textures, exquisite presentation, course delivery perfectly timed and detailed by the chef and his staff. This was the perfect way to finish our Kyoto visit.

I have been following Imai san from Monk for a long time now. I love his connection to the land. His vision is not unique, but what makes it unique is the fact that in Kyoto. He harvests from Ohara, just half hour or so the city. You will need a reservation with time. So please come to Monk next trip to Kyoto.

Such a beautiful experience in a lovely quiet part of Kyoto. Really accommodating staff as we had kids with us and they were willing to adapt what was served for them, i.e just serve them pizza instead of the other dishes.

This is what food is all about! Thoughtful combinations, excellent presentation, every bite a wonderful surprise.

Tried several times to book a reservation and every time the website would say failed to create payment. We tried several different cards and every time we got the same result. Really sad we are not going to be able to try it out as we were really looking forward to this restaurant
Be the first to ReplyA Meal Like No Other!
Wow. A meal at Monk is a meal like no other. My husband and I booked a dinner reservation here on Christmas and we had no idea it would be a 3 hour dining experience unlike any experience we've had before! It's a stunning interior of a restaurant with a romantic and intimate vibe of limited seating, and it's as though you're on a culinary journey with only a few other guests along for the ride. It's a multi-course extravaganza of flavors and presentation, with each dish beautifully prepared right in front of your eyes. I'm a vegetarian and my husband is not, but Monk was able to accommodate our needs perfectly. We enjoyed the warmth, humor, professionalism, and expertise of the staff tremendously, and they even accompanied us outside after our meal, bowing deeply while saying goodbye. It was the art of food fully perfected in every way and I'm so honored to have had such a divine, pleasurable experience. Thank you Monk!

This was one of the most intimate and amazing meals. Every course (and there are many) was totally delicious. And we were made to feel so welcomed. Would thoroughly recommend.

Visited here 3 years ago with my wife and it was so good I went back with my three sons, all well travelled. It’s the best meal I’ve had in Japan on both visits, and quite possibly one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Yoshihiro cooks food from the heart, and it shows. Seven courses, each one better than the last, and all from a pizza oven right in front of you. Choose the bar table to watch the wizard at work, and be charmed with the conversation. Simple vegetables brought to life, flavours the like of which I’ve not experienced. Very definitely the best pizza I’ve ever tasted. No review could do this restaurant justice, you simply need to book it if you’re in Kyoto. It’s an absolute privilege to have visited.

What an amazing experience. We were greeted by the chef and owner himself and the rest of his staff. The menu was pre-set but he was able to work with our dietary restrictions. The menu was 99% vegetables and you cannot comprehend what he is able to do with veggies. It is unbelievable. Simply. Fun. Entertaining. Quiet. If you want a dinner without loud tourists, private and immersed in a culinary journey, do this.

...I would have If only my mother had cooked them with the artistry of Monk. It's possible that no other chef on the planet celebrates the vegetable with the skill of chef Yoshi Imai. Cooking almost entirely in a wood-fired pizza oven, Yoshi creates a seven-course feast for the lucky few centered around whatever is freshest from the market and foraged from the hillside, rich on vegetables but with enough meat and protein to satisfy. For me, the standouts were the spring onion soup served with fresh baked flat bread, the charred and grilled mixed vegetables, and the duck ragout pizza. The location is magical, tucked along the fabled Philosopher's Path. My husband and I made an afternoon of it: beginning at Nanzen-Ji Temple, wandering the path northward, visiting the Honen-In temple, and finishing our day with at Monk. If I lived in Kyoto, I'd buy a seat at Monk's bar and inscribe it with my name, simply so I could eat there whenever I wanted...which might be daily.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent dining experience in Kyoto
There are many nice dining places in Kyoto. This is one of gems in Kyoto. The food and dishes are not sumptuous but very fresh, tasty and healthy. The services are exceptionally attentive and homey. The freshly baked pizza is extremely good and a must try item. You can experience the passion and heart of the chef during the meal. With very limited seats/tables available, early reservation online is highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyJapanese beyond sushi
As great as the Japanese food classics are, there is life beyond sushi and tempura. This place delivers on that big time. Owner/chef Yoshi takes a (literally) fresh approach to Japanese cuisine, inspired by daily morning visits to a farmers vegetable market north of Kyoto. It's not vegetarian, but they are often the stars of dishes in the multi-course set menu. We tried some we have never seen before. The other star of this cosy restaurant is the wood-fired oven that is used for everything, including the finale pizza that other reviewers have raved about. Sitting at the counter, you get into a range of conversations with the staff and other guests, which adds to the experience. Not the cheapest meal you will have in Japan (food was around 7,500 yen per person) but likely to be one of the best. There are two nightly sittings - 5.30 and 8.30. The first may sound early to eat but it gives you a chance to head to the restaurant after strolling around the nearby Philosopher's Path or Silver Pavilion in daylight.
