NOT as cool as they think they are
I ate here on a Saturday in October, with 2 other women. They had eaten at mentone before; I had not but I was excited about it because they’d loved it before. Please note it was not at all crowded. FOOD- 2.5 / 5: We started with the Caesar Salad (mediocre) and the Figs & Prosciutto appetizer (very good) - this was pretty standard but it was the high point of the meal. Our 3 entrees were the porchetta which was literally inedible (like eating the fat sliced off of a cut of meat), the bolognese pasta which was mediocre (bland and not enough pasta for the sauce), and the capellini with clams which was very good (tasty and fresh). We did not try dessert. MENU- 2 / 5: It’s VERY limited. And it’s in Italian, which is fine except that there’s not a lot of explanation to be had, anywhere. The cocktails looked novel but again, very little explanation. There seemed to be 3 separate wine lists, so the wine choices were not limited. SERVICE- 1.5 / 5: We were greeted and seated with a smile, and offered water immediately. That pleasant first 5 minutes saved this rating from being a 1. The waitress was friendly at first but not helpful when we had questions (“What is this Italian word in this cocktail- what does it taste like?” “It’s a spirit.”). Once our food was served she never checked in again or even made eye contact. About halfway through the meal we had to wave her down to ask for more wine and also bread… all of which finally came when we were almost finished. But the worst thing about the service was how snotty and dismissive our waitress and our food runner were about our complaints about the porchetta. All of us has had porchetta before and we know it’s pork belly and we like it. This was a thick slab of moist fat with a crispy crust. We found it inedible and said so. Both staff members rolled their eyes and said, patronizingly, “of course pork belly is fatty”. There was ZERO apology or offer to exchange it. They just dismissed our concerns and had nothing else to say to us for the rest of the night. We could not get out of there fast enough. BOTTOM LINE: a few things are tasty but the various negatives far outweigh that. Don’t waste your time.

Extremely limited menu, rude staff, horrible environment/ambiance, mediocre food. One of those places where I question why I left home since I could have made something better there. They just aren't trying and there is no excuse for flat, boring food if you only have a few things on the menu.

My husband has come here multiple times while working in the area. We finally got to go together for the first time last night. His raving reviews about the place are well deserved. Everything was delicious, creative, and the attention to detail was greatly appreciated by us. The staff was friendly and attentive as well. I have not felt this excited about a dinner since our last Michelin star experience in Italy!

Really was looking forward to our dinner after hearing and reading about Chef Kinch’s local restaurant. Nice lively vibe inside; we were seated right away for our 6:30 reservation although service through our meal was spotty. The Caesar salad and focaccia to start were excellent. My pizza was just okay - soggy and raw in the center. Surprised there were no Italian wines by the glass to accompany the mostly Italian inspired menu. Ordered chocolate gelato for dessert - it was so salty (!) I tried but couldn’t eat it. When questioned whether it was salted chocolate gelato, the waiter said no but sea salt was sprinkled on top…however the overpowering saltiness was infused throughout. No attempt to suggest an alternative dessert, no apology, no nothin’. Probably won’t return.

Kinch does it again! Another place for good eats!
Made reservations for Mentone and of course, it was Friday, so we were not able to eat meat since it’s lent. All good, bc sometimes a simple pizza is all you need. We ordered a Caesar salad to start, and it was so delish. The veggies were fresh, the dressing was sooo good and if you like croutons, you are going to love theirs; they were super big and tasty. We ordered a margherita and an anchovy pizza to share. The pizzas were beyond yummy. The crust is just perfect, and the pizzas had just the right amount of sauce and toppings. I find sometimes pizzas can be ‘over’ topped, making the crust soggy. We each had a glass of bubbles although place has a full bar. The staff were all very nice and attentive. I would def go back again. I would e
Note: parking is not the worst, but it can be a little challenging. Reservations on a Friday evening is prime time so although we had to circle around twice, we finally found parking.
Very good food!
Excellent restaurant with a unique Italian fare menu. The Focaccia and burrata (Stracciatella) is outstanding. My Mama used to make Stracciatella as a egg zuppa so I was surprised to see this a burrata cheese type dish. Outstanding! The sashimi ahi also very good. The Caesar salad was huge and tasty. We had their reknown Margherita pizza. One of the best pizzas in SC County. Overall, I give this place a high recommend.
Drawbacks — bit loud and boisterous. The service was great, however, almost too attentive as we felt rushed to order.
Not for everyone!
If you analyze restaurants by price and portion size, Mentone is not for you. If you only like food the way you’ve had it in the past, you might not like this place. If your idea of an Italian restaurant requires a red checked table cloth, if you don’t know that there are other countries along the Mediterranean besides Italy and that they have their own distinctive cuisines, you might find this place a little too difficult. It’s already hard to get a table, so feel to skip it.
If you like carefully prepared, innovative takes on Mediterranean cuisine, you might find, as I and many others have, that Mentone is a gem.
Upscale pizza and pasta
Limited menu but good, tasty food. Beautiful bar. Expensive but a nice place for a treat. Light and airy room.

Just because you're a Michelin-starred chef doesn't give you a pass to gouge customers. The setting here is nice (presently outdoors due to covid), but seating is limited, you'll often have to stand and wait for 20+ minutes, food is served on paper plates with plastic utensils, portions are miniscule (tapa-style with no sides) yet priced as if they were entre dishes. Order the "Summer Tomato Salad," for instance, and you'll get 4 cherry tomatoes cut in half, sitting on top of a clump of burrata swimming in oily stock - for $17. The personal small pizzas average $22. The dough is barely cooked, so you have to work to separate the pieces because of the doughy bond. Be careful lifting them up, as they are completely limp and all the sauce and ingredients slide right off. Ingredients are minimal, by the way. For to-go orders they often give customers older, pre-cooked pizzas that are warmed again just before being served. The selling point for the pizza is the "pinsa" style crust. But it's doughy and the edges are often burned. Order the pasta bolognese for $22, and you'll get a fist size of pasta with bland sauce, no sides. Consistent with most everything else here, there is little use of herbs and spices. It should also be noted that the menu is small. If you don't arrive at the beginning of a shift (for lunch or dinner), they will run out of dishes, which further limits your options. The best part of their menu is the wine selection. The credit here goes to their wine director Allisa. She is amazing.

Their crust is good, but they are really stingy with the toppings. even the cheese and tomato sauce. So it's kind of like a really good thin slice of bread with a bit of flavoring. Staff is friendly.

We ordered two pizzas and a Caesar salad to go. All were delicious. The salad was the best I’ve ever had!

We had a delicious pizza meal at Mentone with friends and our dogs. Everyone on staff was friendly and the service was excellent. The pizza was amazing!!! The crust is made from house ground flour and aged for three days. It is fresh, stretchy, light and cooked beautifully over fire. We will be going back, as will our friends.

Interesting but slightly odd whole grain crust appeared under cooked, but it was suggested that we heat it again in the oven at home, and may have been intentional. Flavors on the pizza were very good, including something lemon flavored. Cost with tax and tip was $24 for the small personal cheese pizza 9-10" in diameter. When the restaurant opens, two small pizzas and two beers will total $75 with tax and tip, making it the most expensive of the approximately dozen pizza restaurants in Aptos, but a welcome addition, nevertheless.

Although not allowing seating just yet due to Covid-19 restrictions, they have an impressive takeout menu. The pizza is excellent, a nice thin crust with a bubbly edge. The surprise was the Caesqr's salad which they call Chicories. The lettuce is fresh and crisp and the anchovy dressing is amazing, but the best part is the croutons. calling them croutons may be a misnomer because they are serious chunks of bread that are deep fried and are incredible.
We can't wait til they are up and running full bore to experience their full menu.
Highly recommend.
