One of the best pho in Wellington.
Go to pho place and it's really good! Prices have gone up but it's worth it as it's so good. Took family here before and they all loved it

It seems everyone enjoys Vietnamese food, and the Mekong serves wonderful dishes at a very reasonable price. Try the summer rolls - they are the freshest I found in Wellington, yummy. In fact, all the dishes were fresh and delicious, so we returned the next night to sample more from the menu. Lovely staff too, who are helpful and friendly. What more do you want? Try the Mekong.
Be the first to Replybelow average - there are many better places
There is a huge amount of competition on the Wellington scene for food in this price range. And there is a huge amount of really good food in this range, although not many are Vietnamese. This place used to be a real favourite. But on a recent visits we were so disappointed. Pork noodle soup, where the noodles were so overcooked that they were difficult to separate and congealed into a single entity. The stock was not really discernably porky, and the whole thing a little one dimensional, with hardly any kind of vegetable matter as garnish. Most of this was left behind. The other dish was the good old pork shop on rice. I'd been really looking forward to grilled pork chop with charred edges, dripping with grilling sauce and juices flavoured with lemongrass, lime leaves and fish sauce. And with the promised side salad, which I remembered to be generous and crisp. What i got instead was stir-fried pork, with an overly sweet sauce that tasted of nothing memorable, a few shreds of lettuce, a teaspoon of grated carrot and three sliced of cucumber. Miserable. With the Vietnamese place on Bond St and the Vietnamese Cafe in Petone, I'm not coming back here until i hear that there have been changes. And with so much competition in that neighbourhood, we'll pick a different place for our quick-eats. I used to love coming here. the food was cheap, but prepared properly, presented with pride and very tasty. The service was warm and friendly. I get the feeling that there has been a change of management, but they need to get a few things sorted, even if the menu is exactly the same.
Be the first to ReplyMeh - just passable
Disclaimer: I'm from the States and have only eaten Vietnamese in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles region where there is a large Vietnamese diaspora. Summer rolls with shrimp: shrimp came in a really small size and were colorless. Lettuce was shredded and mixed with mint. Fish sauce tasted good with sprinkled peanuts. I could tell the noodles were freshly boiled since they were warm. Overall not bad but wish shrimp was larger or higher quality. Pho: the noodles were slightly grainy. Strange texture. Do not recommend. Be bung: pork ball was decent, fish sauce could have been stronger. The spring roll was freshly fried. The noodles were large and not the same type of noodle I am used to. Wish they did not mince the mint leaves with the salad. No peanuts or not enough peanuts on top. Too much carrot. Overall would rate the food just average.

Food isn't as authentic to Vietnamese as I would have liked but it was fresh, tasty, plentiful and inexpensive. Service is friendly and prompt. No alcohol service, just standard cafe drinks. Good for budget dining and a quick meal.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, service and value
The outside looks like it badly needs a refresh but don't let that put you off. The positive reviews on here are well deserved. The service, food and value were all excellent. I'd definitely recommend the tofu dishes. The cafe didn't accept credit cards (only debit) and we had to pay upon ordering (rather than at the end of the meal).

I am travelling to Vietnam later this year so I wanted to make sure that I could read a menu. The staff have been delightful, helping me with pronounciation, and explaining the dishes. I have had both take away and sit down meals, and both have been delicious, and very generous sizes. The salads are really fresh, and I am keen to see how they compare to the food in Vietnam; going by the clientale in the place, I'd say it must be authentic. I don't think I've ever seen the place empty.
Be the first to ReplyIt is back!!
This has been my favourite place for a while now. On my last few visits, the food was not to their usual standards. I loved all Vietnamese dishes on their menu. But today, I can say it is back again. The Pho was divine. Such a great value too! The crushed ice and coconut dessert is the nicest thing to finish the meal with!
