LOVED the cake!
We got a take out cake -- Almond Meringue with mango. It was fresh and crispy. The texture was melt-in-your-mouth. We got the smallest size cake (8 inch) for $26 and it's perfect for 6 people (each person gets one meringue puff on top). We would definitely come back here again. It was SO good!

Not sure how they still stay in business. I was buying cakes 25 years ago and they were quite good.. recently I bought a couple of times and they were simply inedible. I tried the apple pie and St honore cake. They looked good, but the taste was horrible, the pastry was burned and filling very cheap. Don't waste your money..

It used to be Maxine of Hong Kong patisserie place! Last visit the patisseries are not made to the same standard, not as good! Must have changed management or the chef has left!
Be the first to ReplyDesserts to die for - meals can improve a little
Maxim's Patisserie is a smallish venue, so reservstiona are advised at peak times. The all-inclusive meal menu includes a wide choice of mouthwatering desserts (which can be ordered alone without a full meal). The meal menu is comprehensive and variable ranging from curries to seafood, steaks to salads. We tried both of the soups of the day, the carrot ginger was excellent and piping hot; the minestrone, mainly beans and not at all traditional style. The lamb shank was very tender with plenty of vegetables, but the sauce a little thin. For $9 extra an entree can be converted into a five course meal including soup, salad and dessert and coffee/tea. Good value? On the whole, yes but taste can improve a little. We paid just over $80 all inclusive for two full meals without drinks. A fraction on the high side but the fish tanks and live music on Fridays and Saturday nights provided good distraction.
Be the first to Replyhorrid service, bad food, expensive
At a 'birthday' dinner service August 26, 2019, we ordered two combo dinners (coffee, dessert, salad included). One guest ordered striploin steak which was so full of gristle it could barely be cut by a knife. We advised our server however, she did not speak english and had no idea what were saying, we asked to speak to the manager - we saw the server speak to the manager - both started laughing and the manager went back into the assumed kitchen area - no effort was made to offer or fix anything. We were never asked about dessert which was included in the price so we went to the pastry counter to look ourselves. Well the wait staff were now having their dinners in the same room as the diners and no one was serving anyone (there were 2 other tables at the time) coming around - of course we had to interrupt the wait staff's dinner in order for us the paying clients to be served!!!!! We advised the staff that one of us had a severe nut allergy and we wondered which desserts did not contain nuts - again, they either did not understand, did not know or did not care and had nothing to offer in terms of suggestions so we 'guessed'. Once coffee and dessert were done, we waited for the bill - while the wait staff ate - they never looked over, asked how anything was, if we needed anything (coffee refill may have been a suggestion) - nothing. So again, we the clients were forced to interrupt the wait staff who were eating in the dining room to ask for our bill - we also asked to speak to the manager. We were told the manager just said to give us a $10 credit for the $20 steak????? the manager did not come to speak with us at any time during the meal or after. While this place may be great for pastries and cakes, they certainly do not know - or care - how to run a restaurant, deal with patrons or serve food. I would never go back and I will ensure that I share my experience with as many folks as possible.

Be the first to ReplyGreat cakes and pastries
Had been here quite a few times buying their cakes for take out and then when I was in Toronto this last August, I went there with a few friends for high tea. I just loved the Mango Almond Merengue cake they served. It was almost heavenly. If I remember correctly, they have a special price for a tea set of one piece of cake from the cake counter and your choice of tea or coffee in the late afternoon. In fact, just take a look at their cake counter, they have so many different varieties of great looking merengue cakes, mousse cakes, cheesecakes, fruit pies and flans, and specialty cakes on display that you cannot really resist bringing some home. The place serves lunch and dinner as well and I may come one day to give it a try, hoping that their menu measures up to the cakes and pastries they sell.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced for Lunch
I asked Siri for a recommendation. "She" suggested Maxim as being moderately priced. I do not consider $25.00 - $30.00 as moderate, even if the food was good (which it was).

Apart from excellent cakes and desserts, Cafe Maxim also serves various styles of lunch, Western, Chinese and Nuvo.
Be the first to ReplyBest pastry in Toronto ?
Inn on the Park in at its prime had the best pastry in Toronto years ago, the hotel and restaurent has gone downhill . Maxine started very humble in Chinatown ,when we visit our family , we used to preorder Hong Kong style western pastries from them .They have moved north and had expanded into a pastry and restaurent . We come for the pastries , Black Forest cake , mango , stawberry short cake , the best is the chestnut cake , just like the Maxim in Hong Kong ! The owners are hands on and friendly . The restaurent is good , I believed the chef an Italian lady , the food with a slight fusion touch. . Always leave with a smile
