DC’s Finest Italian Tasting Menu Experience
We had the opportunity to experience the culinary splendor of Chef Nicholas Stefanelli at his restaurant Masseria for my wife’s birthday this past October. It was quite the experience, enjoying the six course tasting menu, alongside a bottle of wine and a few cocktails. Ivan, our server, alongside our sommelier Kyle and the rest of the staff were very personable about making us feel welcome at every moment. What stood out first and foremost was their attention to detail. When we arrived to our table, there was a handwritten birthday card for my wife. We started off the evening with two cocktails. While they surely were not cheap, they were some of the best mixed drinks we have ever had. We then ordered an amazing bottle of wine, discussing our palette with Kyle, from our favorite region in Italy to go along with our tasting menu. The focaccia to start was simply divine, almost to the point of tears. We must say that this is one of the best tasting menus that we have ever had in the DC area. Each plate came out thoughtfully curated, like a work of art. Not to mention the Versace plates that the food was served on. What is so nice about Masseria is that it emphasizes how Italian cuisine is more than just pasta. Ivan explained to us how in Italy, pasta is mainly just a mid dish and how meals such as fish and beef are prioritized. This went way beyond the traditional Italian cuisine that we are accustomed to. To finish off the evening, they sent us away with a token gift bag with some great treats. Once you’ve tried Masseria, you can understand why this place is the #12 best Italian restaurant outside of Italy. We highly recommend Masseria for your next special occasion.

Supplement charge was not reminded by the waiter, and we paid more than double by unknowingly selecting alternative dishes for the course. For $178, You can only get a very salty pork as your main course, tasting like grocery store ham. Prepare $245 on top of $178 for food only when booking, not $178 as advertised.
Be the first to ReplyA disgrace to its Michelin star
This experience was extremely disappointing. Perhaps the food is great at times, but I went this past Saturday evening and for being Michelin star dining.. it was just embarrassing. The staff were not welcoming, totally robotic, and described the food in a such a rushed fashion. I don’t think I saw a single smile. It did not feel personal whatsoever. Even the way they communicated with one another just created an uncomfortable atmosphere where everyone seemed miserable. The food was beautiful, but MAN were the flavors totally out of balance. Some items came out VERY salty. The fried mushroom at the beginning was not only cold, but hard to chew. The worst was my UNDERCOOKED prawn. When I flipped it over, the tail was still gray. I wish I had taken a photo. This is unacceptable. Additionally, many plates had garnishes/toppings/extras that seemed not just useless, but seemed as if they were fried and left out all day. Totally thoughtless, tasteless, and only just aesthetically pleasing. Major tweaking is needed, on flavor balance and service. I would not waste my time here, as DC is filled with plenty of other high quality restaurants with staff who actually care about guests and their dining experience.
Be the first to ReplyThis was an outstanding experience
The food was outstanding. The staff was engaging and attentive. The restaurant was charming and the neighborhood was electric.
Be the first to ReplyMemorable for all the wrong reasons
This was our third and last visit to this restaurant. We enjoyed the first visit (pre-COVID), but the last two have not been good. We were completely underwhelmed by the food at the last two visits, particularly at this price point. The service was neither warm nor attentive across the board. Staff seemed annoyed to be there. No smiles. No interest in creating a nice evening. No enthusiasm about the food. The prices are absurd for the experience. My pre-dinner cocktail at the bar was $70, with not a single smile or hint of warmth from the bartender. Then, at the end of the meal, we are told that there is a 20% service charge that does not include any gratuity (the service charge is mentioned when you make a reservation, but it does not disclose that it does not include any gratuity, which has not been my experience at other places). So, they want a 20% service charge plus a 20% tip based off these inflated prices. I don’t mind a reasonable service charge that builds in an appropriate gratuity, but 40% is insane. We spent over $1100 on a mediocre meal for 4 (with one person drinking only water), and not a single staff member among the many we encountered seemed to care whether we were having a good experience or not. To demand 40% for that subpar performance is a nonstarter. There is much better food and service to be had elsewhere, especially for these prices.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food but service charge and gratuity?
Tough place to get to from the burbs. Excellent service. Very good food. They do Italian very well. When they try to add in some other non Italian ingredients an excellent dish turns average. Overall - a very good restaurant. Is it worth the price? Probably not. The worst part is they bring you the bill and charge a service fee if 20 percent and they say that’s for front and back of the house but not gratuity. So they basically are looking for 40 percent. That left a very sour note. Never seen that before. So they get the four stars. Bad move.

We dined at the chef's table at Masseria and were very pleased with the experience. The staff was amazing and the welcome very warm. Every course on the menu this evening was spectacular, among the highlights were the uni with blue crab, and the capesante (scallop with caviar). Simply delicious. We will definitely be returning to Masseria.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent meal, poor management
We had an absolutely lovely meal until we were asked to leave our table. There is no time restriction on reservations yet we were asked to leave to accommodate another reservation who complained to us at the bar when we vacated. When you drop $3K on dinner, you expect better discretion. We will not be back.
Be the first to ReplyReally do not understand how this place has a Michelin star
Dinner started off pleasantly enough but throughout the evening we had different servers - one sat us down and took our initial drinks orders and went through the menu but couldn't answer questions on the food. He turned back up at the end (more on that shortly). We then had a server who brought out the food and went through what we were being served with the enthusiasm of a wet blanket. The sommelier however was great. The food: utterly disappointing except for the desert. In addition to not being very exciting, two courses were over salted and we had to send one back and they gave us a dish off the other course menu. The couple next to us told us they found it too salty too but were a little intimidated to tell them. The desert was good though. The end: you've paid close to $500 which includes a service charge and when they brought us the bill for beverages, we'd planned on leaving a little extra but the original waiter came to us with the bill and told us that they don't get any of the service charge so please take that into account. Never ever had this happen to us a Michelin star restaurant. Bottom line: not worth it and will definitely not go again. There are far better options in DC.
Be the first to ReplyFresh Tasty Food With a Flare; “A Very Good Restaurant”
Although a bit out of the way from most DC establishments and tourist spots it certainly is well worth a visit and definitely worth its Michelin 1*. The food service was a little fast, but the staff was was exemplary, professional, and attentive. If you can afford it, it’s worth doing the wine-pairing with the tasting menu as it provides the clearest overall impression of the chef’s and sommelier’s talents. They were definitely talented. It’s hard to pick a favorite dish from the dinner, but the pasta with added truffles was a winner, as was the lamb, and especially the bite-sized appetizers. And if you’re there to celebrate a special occasion (and frankly the cost warrants it being a special occasion) they are more than happy to put in the extra effort to make your celebration feel special, as they did with our dinner. If you’re a foodie living in or visiting DC than Masseria should be on your list of restaurants to dine at.
Be the first to ReplyAwful experience, ruined birthday
I went to Masseria for my birthday dinner in February, expecting to be wowed. This was, after all, a Michelin-star restaurant, which is, after all, supposed to be a guarantee of exceptional food and service. By the time the dinner had ended (too soon, as I will explain), I had received neither. For nearly $300 per person, my friend and I had experienced highly forgettable food. Highfalutin descriptions that strained to suggest creativity or sophistication on the part of the chef, when coupled with the mediocrity on the plates before us, suggested that this was fast becoming a typical Michelin caricature. Nevertheless, it was my birthday dinner, and as the food was not unpleasant, albeit disappointing (a Theraflu-like warm cocktail was one of the low points), I decided to keep my impression to myself and try to enjoy the occasion. Our hostess interrupted our conversation twice (another sign of less-than-Michelin-level service), but that was minor enough to be overlooked. The nail in the coffin came when we were in the middle of our dessert course, when our waiter unabashedly plopped down two cups on the table containing checks. We were in the middle of our dessert course, no one had asked if we wanted coffee or tea, no one had asked if we wanted an after-dinner drink, and we had certainly not asked for the bill. Even if we had, since the restaurant knew this was my birthday, they should not have assumed we were paying separately. Instead, they broke all the rules and absolutely were sending us the signal to get out. I was completely appalled. To be rushed out and mistreated at a Michelin-star restaurant after shelling out $300 per person for what was supposed to be a pampered, unforgettable dining experience? Absolutely unacceptable. Things only got worse: I mentioned to our surly waiter that we had not been asked if we wanted anything else and had not requested the check. He said, unapologetically, “Would you like something else?” We said no. Then, experience ruined, as we were getting up to leave, a man who I assume was the maître d came to our table and said, “I hear you felt like you were being rushed to leave. I’m sorry about that.” I responded, coat already in hand, “Well, it’s too late.” He then said, “The next time you come, please let us know what happened this time and we’ll make sure to do something special for you.” I looked at my friend in disbelief. Right -- we come back, pay another $300 each, bring up our unpleasant experience again (not at all awkward) and say we were told we’d get an extra (not at all awkward). As anyone who has ever been to a top restaurant knows, what should have happened is that the maître d’ should have insisted that we stay for a glass of champagne on the house – at the very least. In short, this diner-quality service turned what was a mediocre experience into an awful, angry one. Oh yes – we were given little “goodie bags” with little Masseria-branded olive oil bottles and a few chocolates. I assume it was intended to be something to remember the experience by. Oh, I had that, already – and I plan to tell everyone who is considering going to Masseria or any of the establishments related to it.
Be the first to ReplyArtistry and taste blended
There are eateries with creative flair and there are those with a well-considered taste: Masseria is the rare one that combines understated artistry in its presentations with an unapologetic nod to the rustic scrumptiousness of Puglia.
Be the first to ReplyHard to find, not hard to LOVE
Dinner in the dining room of Masseria last night was a total delight from the attentive servers to the food. An added benefit of the space is that you can actually hear your dinner companion.
If they have a "special" go for it, from our experience it will not disappoint. Be sure to ask as you decide on which dining option to select, though I have to say this restaurant is most flexible on allowing eaters to make their own choices rather than having to have the table choose the same courses.
Our Uber driver had a bit of a challenge finding the front door (it is not prominent with signage).
An Evening at Masseria During the Holidays
I love Puglia. I have spent a lot of time in this special Southern Italian region. I will be there for the entire summer of 2020. A "masseria" is a term used in Puglia for a farm with animals or vegetable gardens; a working farm, with cottages where tourists can stay. Often they host wonderful, fresh "abbondanza" meals of local specialties.
I went with family and friends on Saturday, December 28th to "Masseria" the restaurant. It was not full, but there were people. It is in a gentrifying location, so please be sure your Lyft driver drops you off in the correct place, because my daughter was dropped off in the wrong location and wondering around in the dark with no one on the streets to ask for directions.
The restaurant is very expensive, but you do get amazing offerings. One glitch, which left a sort of sour taste in our mouthes, is that we had a friend who wanted to join us. We called early and asked if we could add 1 person to our table of 6, making it 7. They said "no." Well, we tried yet again a bit later, and they said, "no." We told our friend to come and see if we could cajole them into an extra place at the table. Our friend showed and they said, "no." She left alone, and when we asked why, because the table had enough room for 2 extra places, they said, "oh okay, she can stay." Well she was on her way across the city and, at that point, could not return. I understand that it is an exceptional place with a great deal of thought put into meals, but it just seemed a bit obdurate.
The food was stellar, from the hot celery and apple broth in a tiny cut glass cordial cup, to the various, authentic pasta dishes. The quality of the ingredients was superb; shining herbs, cheeses, choice cuts of meats, white truffles. The chef and his acolytes give special attention to every dish; quality, plating and taste.
Do not go expecting an actual Pugliese restaurant. It is far more serious than the atmosphere in most restaurants in the heel of Italy. Having said that, it is a very special place for important occasions. If you are a foodie, you will love it.
The ambience is smart, exposed pipes, industrial look meets the warmth of a New York bistro (in DC, of course!) The dinnerware warms up the old Brooklyn look with ornate and whimsical Negroni glasses and Versace butterfly plates! I wanted to wear my bread plate home! Divertiti!
excellent service and staff, great wine list, remains a great restaurant in casual inviting environment
This was our second visit to Masseria. I love the creative design and layout of the dining room, and the large spacing between tables. We had exceptional, well-informed service, including a sommelier that knew his wines and his first-rate wine list. We chose the chef’s tasting menu and it was fabulous. The entire tasting menu was different from that of a year ago when we had dinner there. For starters, we had a lovely plate of mini-appetizers, including a chickpea bombolino cooked to delicate perfection with a melted cheese inside, sprinklings of parmesan and a green dill sauce, and a superb veal tartare. This was followed by delicate and lightly smoked sweetbread and then a small, pistachio-covered cylinder of fois gras. Both were heaven! The beef was over-salted but the Sicilian stuffed pasta with a very delicate pesto sauce was very good. The desert course with tiramisu gelato and dense chocolate mousse, with dollops of whipped mascarpone foam, was delectable. We were so glad we’d returned to Masseria. The atmosphere, service and food continue to be best in class.

Great restaurant all around. We liked the atmosphere, casual with outstanding food. Service as you would expect from a restaurant in this category: fantastic. Tasting menu (6 course ) highly recommended. We loved the monkfish, foie gras, oyster, the pasta dish was amazing. Absolutely worth it, spectacular food, great atmosphere, location a bit off the beaten path, just off route 50 before coming in demontage East on route 50 (convenient!).
Be the first to ReplyLooks can be deceiving.....
Once we crossed the threshold, we fell in love with the ‘court yard’ in which we dined AND during dinner the manager introduced to the vineyard owner....wine was excellent! And then there was the meal.....aaahh.....excellent! Service here was 1st rate!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed
I had been so excited about Masseria after hearing nothing but wonderful things. We decided to give it a try for my husband's birthday, and it was very disappointing especially for the price. The food interesting, but only ok. I was excited about trying the asparagus, but they were out so I got another pasta dish instead (ravioli), and it had such a strong lemon flavor, I couldn't enjoy the rest of it. My husband got the summer salad, but which was good but nothing special. For the second course, I got the gnocchi which was the only dish I really liked, and he got the linguini, and the fish flavor was so strong it was hard to enjoy. For the main course, I had the suckling pig and he had the ribeye. I enjoyed the ribeye, but I took one bite of the pig, and I couldn't eat it. It was almost mushy. The dessert was the best dish (chocolate), and we were so full by then we couldn't eat the cheeses. The presentations were impressive, but it didn't make the food taste any better. Our bill came out to almost $450 for two people with only the 4 course menu, one of the least expensive bottles of wine, and two cocktails before. For that price, I could eat at many other restaurants and have food I actually enjoyed
I was also disappointed in the fact that 3 different people asked us what we were celebrating (birthday and our recent wedding), and there was no extra effort or compensation whatsoever other than "congratulations" written on the dessert. The atmosphere and experience are neat, but not worth it in the slightest for the price.
I definitely don't plan to go back, and I wouldn't recommend it for others.
One of DC's Best!
We were impressed with their tasting menu, very creative and tasty dishes. The service was excellent, this was a pleasurable experience and definitely a favorite destination of ours in DC. We really like the atmosphere here here, great for a casual dinner and worthy of a celebratory feast. A must try for all local foodies.
