Don't order from the restaraunt week menu!!We are frequent customers here but tonite Mare didn't live up to its standards. We typically never order off the "restaurant week" menu but tonite we had tickets to an event so went that route. My wife ordered the filet steak which was as tough as leather. I had a pasta dish that was ok but the waiter didn't offer any grated cheese . And then a $10 charge for tap water was a bit over the top.Typically when ordering off the main menu the food is deliciousand the service is great. However I do not recommend Mare on restaurant week in BOSTON.
Be the first to ReplyI went to Mare for the Dine out Boston experience.
Our server Girolamo was very nice in the beginning and when we asked him for the dine out menu, his demeanor immediately changed. He took our order and we never saw him again. He was occasionally checking on his other tables, but never came back to us. I was super disappointed, because I wanted to order a coffee with the main course. I don't know if he didn't care about us, because we didn't get alcohol or because we did the Dine out Boston and he thought his tip won't be as big, but whatever the reason for his behavior was, was not okay. After dessert the busser cleaned our table and we had to wait for our server to bring us the bill for 10 minutes, then we had to wait for him to run our cards for 10 more.PS he didn't seem to be busy at all, just standing in a corner. At least our food runners and hostesses were super friendly, polite and wonderful. I hope I never get this server again!

I checked out Mare to kickoff my 2023 Dine Out Boston experience. The menu was full of delicious choices and it was hard to pick, which I thought was a good sign. I started with the surf & turf. The scallop was perfectly seared and the braised short-rib was tender and soft. The mashed potatoes were also seared into a delicious potato cake. I recommend getting a little bit of everything in your fork for a perfect bite of bliss. For my main entree, I had the linguine & clams. It was beautifully arranged and the pasta tasted so fresh. The sauce was yummy but did not overwhelm the natural flavor of the clams which I really enjoyed. It was a little difficult to get the clams out of the shell but eating them is worth the work. Finally, I concluded the meal with a chocolate soufflé. It was warm and gooey. The whip cream went well with it but I wish I had vanilla ice cream. All of the portions were perfect, not too much and not too little. The place had a nice upscale vibe to it and it was well attended. I'm only giving it 4 stars because I felt the service could have been a little better. The person greeting at the entrance was not the most helpful when we asked about a coat check/closet. I also felt we were rushed. It was not terrible service but it lacked the warmth and hospitality of other Italian restaurants I've visited in the area.

We had a reservation, and grabbed a seat by the bar while we waited for them to get the table ready. Had some peroni beers while we watched them shuck oysters, and saw the display of seafood behind. My boyfriend and I thought that we were kind of hurried through, in terms of the service. Aside from that aspect though, it was a delicious meal. We did the Dine Out Boston 3 course meal. The standout, for me, were the oysters. It was chef's choice, and I thought it was a good variety- all extremely fresh, and none too overpowering. Before I knew it was chef's choice I was thinking to order all Wellfleet's because I love those, and have enjoyed them while in Wellfleet in the past. My main was the salmon, which came with fennel and onion underneath, and a delicious creamy sauce that complimented the salmon well. The salmon was slightly more under in one part than I would have liked, so I guess specify if you would like it cooked a little more. The dessert was excellent. They took a humble bread pudding to the next level. Dried figs inside are a great idea!

I really like this spot! I was visiting Boston, and my local friend recommended it. Our bartender/server was super formerly and gave us great recommendations. We started with the kampachi tartare appetizer, and it was great. My main, lobster ravioli, was absolutely incredible. The vibe here is really cool too. Really enjoyed everything about the experience. I will definitely go back next time I'm in town.

I planned a surprise retirement party for my husband and our experience was wonderful. Gaia responded to my initial inquiry and was helpful with my questions prior to the event. Dinner started with oysters, little neck clams and shrimp with our cocktails. We then had the prefix Amalfi menu and each course was excellent. Our servers kept the wine flowing and ensured all were taken care of. Thank you to the entire team for making this occasion so special.
Be the first to ReplySome of the best meals I've had.
Seafood is very fresh and flavors are on point. The restaurant is located in an alleyway and had many seats inside. Service was impeccable and money well spent. I'd definitely go again.
Be the first to ReplyMare has a great atmosphere and vibe.
The oysters were great. I ordered the seafood risotto and wasn't super impressed for the price. My boyfriend had the grilled swordfish and he said it was good, nothing special. Overall had a lovely dinner but not sure the flavor and portions of the food are worth the price tag.

We had a 7:45 reservation made weeks ago and were seated 20 minutes late. The table we were given gave me a view of the bathroom, with people waiting in line to pee next to our table. I asked the manager, Ciro, to move and he said it would be an uncertain amount of time (it was now 8:15). I told him this was ridiculous, waiting for a reservation we made so long ago to be given such a table, I could almost see the toilets. His response "hey, this is one of the tables in the restaurant" was delivered with a glib and condescending attitude. He did not want to hear from me, I was another problem client on busy Saturday night. I try to be reasonable but this was too much. Everything else was fine, some good food, busy place so some people must like it, but my experience was ruined before it really started. I won't go back.

My visit to Mare started off a bit rocky but turned Into a really nice dinner. Food was 9/10 - we had asked to not see faces from the langostino but sure enough out dish came out with lil guy staring at us. The flavor was delicious though on everything else. Service was 7/10 - our server was nice but definitely took long to order. Our back server (pacero con cabello rubio, muchas gracias hermano) definitely saved the experience! He was attentive and always available. Ambiance - 9/10 nice music, decor was great, very clean ... yet I do have to say I did not like people coming in sweats and stuff but hey it's the world we live in now. Overall it ended up being a great experience!

We stopped by here for dinner on a Saturday night and it didn't disappoint at all! We had reservations for 08:30 and promptly were seated. I ordered the wild boar parpadelle, while my husband ordered the squid ink pasta- he said it was delicious! I also thought my dish was wonderful- would recommend!

Well, if you're gonna change the lobster ravioli, guess i gotta change my review. My finances parents were excited about this place and I really hyped up the lobster ravioli.Last time I had it - they were fat ravioli stuffed with lobster, lobster chunks surrounding the pasta (huge bonus for me), and the sauce was impeccably delicious. Literally to die for. This time, well, I'm gonna save myself the time of laying it all out... What a bummer. Maybe it's pandemic related.I went to town with the makers manhattan from the bar though. Kudos to the bartender for making that delicious.

Made a reservation for my birthday excited to have a nice seafood dinner with my bf. Of course it's been a heatwave in Boston, expected to sit inside, but they sat us outside. They have a very small indoor dining area so I assumed the inside was reserved. Hindsight is 20/20, and we should of just left to find another place to eat, but I was excited and still wanting some good seafood. So... the service was very bizarre. It's an oyster bar, so you would think the servers are knowledgeable and are gonna want to up sell and explain the options and different oysters/dishes. Nope. We had to ask questions which only led to short responses and made us question how much he knew. Also, there were a lot of wait staff... like 10+ people just standing around and everyone looked miserable and awkward. We ordered and most everything was good minus some shrimp that was extremely over cooked. After appetizers and dinner, we were looking to order some dessert.... We had to ask one wait staff to get a small box, and then another to either get our server or a dessert menu, we waiting over 20 minutes for our server to come back. Mind you, it's 90+ degrees with zero air flow so we were growing impatient as we were melting. So by the server came back we were both over it and just asked for the check. We even mentioned we were looking to get dessert but since no one could acknowledge us we just want to leave. Zero care, just said okay. No, "I'm so sorry, my apologies" whatever, just nothing.... To me, when you are spending over $200 you would think servers would care. So I would love to give this place a higher rating, but the service was terrible so would never recommend. Definitely made my birthday dinner not enjoyable at all

Outstanding service, excellent cocktails, and my God the food, the FOOD. We went here two weekends in a row because as good as the squid ink pasta and clams were, the lobster ravioli was better and I had buyers remorse lol. Best lobster ravioli I've ever had, and I get it everywhere. They also do a tableside cacio and pepe, which was fine but not really my thing. However, I love veal and their veal was amazing. Perfectly-cooked and still white, as a good cut of veal should be. The oyster selection was awesome as well, plus a wayyy better Negroni than I could ever make. We finished with Sicilian coffee and the afogato. It ain't cheap but it's so worth it. I would eat here more often but I'd be broke and I'd weigh 400 lbs

I am honestly surprised how high the yelp ratings are of this restaurant considering that it is in North End with much better options in the same location to choose from.We had reservations for 4 at 8p on a weekday night and still had to wait ~20 min for our table. No biggie, but it didn't really put us in a good mood once we sat down.Ambience - The restaurant was crowded and stuffy. It had recently rained, so it was very humid and the A/C did very little to make eating inside comfortable. Tables were packed together so that servers had to squeeze through just to serve us. Half the time, I had to speak over guests at the table next to us so that our waiter didn't have to squeeze through to get to my request. The music was also very loud, which made us feel like we were in a night club.Food - Portions were small and overpriced for the area. My college-aged son, who will order squid ink pasta every time he sees it on a menu, said that the squid ink pasta he had at Mare was the worst he has ever tried (and believe me, he has tried it at more places than I can count). He said that it tasted like the ocean but not in a good way. My high school aged son had the lobster roll (which he ordered at several restaurants during our weeklong Boston trip) and said it was the worst one he had on the trip. My husband's pasta was mediocre and not memorable for a 30+ dollar dish. I had the raw oysters, which were very fresh and good, but not "I must go back" good. With the humidity/heat and loud music in the place, we just wanted to quickly finish our meal and leave. We returned to our hotel still hungry and ended up ordering pizzas at our hotel restaurant which was very comfy.I would give this place 1-star, but the host at the restaurant seemed nice, and no one was rude to us (though not particularly attentive), thus the 2 star rating.

Maybe it just how Boston people are but every staff member at this restaurant made me and my husband feel out of place yet welcomed at the same time. Let me explain: we are visiting Boston. We just happened to dine at Mare cuz it was pretty well reviewed around little Italy area. I think this may have been one of those ~ fancy ~ restaurants because we were definitely the worst dressed. The staff members were rude and also friendly at the same time lol! I don't know how to explain; but again, I'm guessing it's a Boston thing. The food was just OK. We shared oysters, I had the black squid linguine and my husband had a burger. We liked our food but it definitely wasn't worth the price. Overall, I guess if you want to enjoy a pretty fancy meal, come here and make sure you dress nice!
Be the first to ReplyA pleasant upscale atmosphere, however, not special enough
A pleasant upscale atmosphere, however, not special enough nor were the flavors memorable. The Mozarella in the caprese was mediocre...would expected a creamy burrata type. The squid linguine dish bland, the seafood risotto unremarkable. Even the chocolate mousse was nothing to write home about. Oh, and of the 6 oysters we tried, only one type was full of taste. For a $200 dinner I expected to still remember the flavor. Pleasant just not remarkable. Go elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding restaurant and great vibe.
Espresso Martinis and Stuffed Lobster were both amazing. Highly recommend.

-place was packed, atmosphere was lively, great ambience-good choice of oysters -lobster ravioli was delicious-gnocchi frutti de mare was so so and a bit bland-lobster roll was fine but the lobster portion was small-squid ink pasta with clams - no flavor. I felt like I was just eating pasta.
Be the first to ReplyHad the most beautiful meal here last night for my birthday.
Absolutely delicious, the food is the best quality I've had in the north end. Oysters, montepulciano, bufala, gnocchi and dark chocolate mouse were all a DREAM!
Be the first to ReplyRestaurant was very crowded when we arrived on a Saturday
Restaurant was very crowded when we arrived on a Saturday evening, and we waited about 35 minutes to be seated despite having a reservation. The restaurant was very, very cramped and I found myself having to pull my chair in or lean left or right often to allow servers and other patrons to get by, which was not ideal. We had a selection of a dozen oysters, which were great. No complaints there. Lobster cocktail was wonderful. My husband also had a lobster roll, which was very greasy. I had spaghetti with mushrooms, spinach, and "black truffle," but unfortunately the restaurant doesn't use shaved truffle, but oil. Granted, they are using a good amount, and aromatically, the dish was on point. However, too much truffle oil leaves an artificial finish and it made the dish hard to eat. We did not have dessert, so I can't comment there. I don't know that we'd rush back, but it was okay.
Be the first to ReplyEnjoyable, relaxing place for us.
Service was excellent - provided by competent, professional pleasant staff. We sat outside, so I can't speak to what the interior is like. Outside seating is set up in the alleyway that where the entrance is located. So you are just looking at the brick wall of the adjacent bldg. However, it was surprisingly enjoyable due to it being fairly secluded and quiet.Food choices were all quite good. I've also experienced the same quality in Boston's north end for a somewhat lower price point, so that's why I'm four stars instead of five.Complimentary bread included olives (which seems to be a Boston thing we also received at other local restaurants, but not in other cities), oil, and an oil/pesto mix. The pesto option was a real treat. I really like pesto on bread, and don't normally encounter it eating out.My oysters on 1/2 shell starter was excellent. I cannot remember the oyster type I selected, but it tasted exactly as described - sweet with a buttery finish. The provided sauces included horseradish, cocktail, and an oniony vinaigrette. The vinaigrette worked especially well to add a little zip.Crabcakes were done well, as was the bufala mozzarella salad. The wife really liked her wild mushroom spaghetti. I'm not a big truffle fan, so I took her word for it. But I did taste the house made spaghetti, which had a spot on thickness and chew.I thought my lobster roll was excellent. It wasn't overstuffed with lobster - they go for quality rather than quantity. The lobster is torn into fairly small pieces, and mixed with green onions & other small green leaf garnishes. This gave it a full flavor beyond just buttery lobster. A win for Mare.Bread pudding dessert was delicious, if a bit small for splitting between two. And the dinner ended with our server bringing two complimentary glasses of limoncello as a digestif. How nice!
Be the first to ReplyOne of my absolutely favorite restaurants in greater Boston.
Service is always impressive and attentive. The food is delicious as are the drinks. Last time I went we ordered the deconstructed tiramisu as a dessert. It was soupy and not worth it. But still this place will not disappoint. Given the phenomenal food and prior experiences it's a 5 star all day long - tiramisu aside.
