Small, friendly restaurant with great food and wine
We visited this restaurant after a morning of "shopping" at the Aligre Market. It is a fun flea market with lots of house removal stuff to pick through and bargain for. It also has a covered market and stalls on the street with very fresh and bargain priced produce. We visit the area at least once a week on trips to Paris. We try a new restaurant nearly every time, but after today's experience, we have found one definitely worth a return visit. It was easy to make a reservation (and probably necessary considering its popularity with locals). We were the first clients ar 12:30, but it was full when we left, with some clients outside when we left - note that the temperature was in the 50's so it takes some commitment to have lunch outside - I did notice that blankets were available as Paris cafes can no longer use their gas or electric heaters on their terraces. We had a warm welcome and a choice of 3 entrees, about 6 plats and 3 desserts on the lunch menu with a plat du jour added. Very reasonable prices considering the quality and quantity of food and drink. Two of us had a cheese burger French style on a giant brioche (I think) bun with nice, not industrial fries. We were happy with the doneness of the meat, but most American visitors might be surprised at the rareness. I ordered mine saignon, which is rare and it was lightly browned top and bottom and completely rare in the middle - exactly as I wanted it. My wife had the fish special which was "Juliette" similar to cod, perfectly cooked on a bed of grilled vegetable with a small bowl of delicious marinated vegetable and a side of macaroni and cheese. She would ordinarily avoid mac and cheese (I have never seen her order that in 50+ years) but she thought it was very nice. Our other friend had a bavette of veal which he thought was excellent with unusually, tasty spices. He also cleaned up his portion of mac and cheese. A carafe of water was on the table before we even ordered, which is a thoughtful and well appreciated gesture - I have a hard time figuring out why diners would pay quite a few euros to have bottled water when the eau de Seine is quite good, totally safe and very fresh tasting. We had a super bottle of pinot noir from a small vineyard in the Carcassonne area - very fairly priced and maybe the best tasting wine we have had in the two weeks we have been in Paris. I had a chocolate cake, which was a tiny bit overdone, but still pretty good. Two of the others had a rhubarb tart with ice cream and liked it. What more could you ask for a nice lunch in Paris - very friendly welcome, interesting decor, good food and wine. Le Charonne is in my address book.
