Very limited menu, not a vegetable in sight
We were greeted warmly and seated promptly for our reservation. It's good to be forewarned that the daily changing menu is extremely small, and you may or may not find something you wish to eat on any given day. They do not modify dishes, it's not their style. Do not attempt it if you are a vegetarian and definitely not if you're vegan. On the day we visited there was not a vegetable in the house. One of us had bread for lunch. That was the only item on the menu that wasn't meat, fish, shellfish, or melted cheese. Also, they bring the dishes as they wish to, so you may find yourself waiting to eat until your tablemates have finished what the restaurant decided is their starters and then serves up what they consider to be your entree. If you eat everything and are happy with whatever you're served, whenever it's served, and don't mind paying upwards of $50 per person (without alcohol) for not a lavish lunch, you may like this place.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous food + amazing service = a night to remember
So much more than a dinner out, our evening at Locust was an amazing experience. From the exuberant welcomes to the lively playlist to the creative and extraordinarily delicious food, to the active participation in our selfie on the way out, it was a night to remember. We particularly enjoyed the potted peekytoe crab dip with curry potato crisps, the roll your own sushi style beef tartare, the amazing bread and, for a delightful finish, the milk, egg, ice. Cannot say enough good about both food and service.
Be the first to ReplyI didn't want to go in the first place...
Wife said this was recently voted best restaurant in Nashville and we both have loved everything from The Catbird Seat and similar experiences in town so she made the res. Let me preface this by saying, I am a poor elitist. A redneck who can appreciate elevated cuisine and sometimes come out of my own ignorance to be impressed by the service industry which seems to keep take itself too seriously but I digress... I didn't go into this in a positive mindframe. It was Father's Day, I had just woken up from a nap and I wasn't hungry. It didn't help that the menu clues (they dont have a set menu but fluctuates with the market and whim of the staff) suggested that I was probably in for fish. (Can I just say that all whitefish is the same? That's another bias). The place is on 12th South, hipster central, so I am even more annoyed at the amount of new flat brim Stetsons walking down the street. Our res was at 5 because they're so hard to come by I'm told but were ushered in quickly, the staff does one of those Moe's "Heyyyyyyyyy!!!" like their old friends when you come in and we have a seat at the window right on the sidewalk. (Why the greetings? Everytime so other couple or table come in, it's the same so people at the table look and see who's coming in and my rage is growing.) The menu is on the table and it consists of a bunch of the things we've on menu's publish here and...again, oysters, razor clams, 100$ caviar, lamb dumplings, scallops and the thing that was a mystery, market fish (dover sole). Raging. Listen, I don't want a cocktail at 5pm on a sunny Sunday but at least they weren't over $15. The wine list looks good but again, I'm in a mood and why can't there be some chicken, beef, steak, lamb pops, some damn protein of substance? When the staff comes around to you, they crouch at the end of the table so you look down on them. I don't know if they are again trying to welcome you and humble themselves to you but I hated that. You're not coaching me in little league. You are the artist. You are better than me and you are charging as such. I want to look uup to know as the person who knows more and can convince me that I need to learn and appreciate your craft...anyway. We order homemade curry chips and crab dip. It looks good but I wasn't a huge fan but I know I am not who they are pitching this to Mife wife and mom liked it plenty. The only thing I ordered was the lamb dumplings with some kind of foam and pickled seaweed. I must say that I didn't love it at first bite as it was super sour, acidic and citrusy but the lamb was earthy as good lamb should be and it grew on me. A good meat app that showed technique and creativity. Ok, I am coming out of my funk a bit while still watching people outside who cannot parallel park. The music has now switch from some old Nas style rap beats to Rush. I neverminded at Catbird or others when the music that played for everyone seem to be for the crew first and foremost and then the atmosphere and maybe I'm getting more crotchety but I donm't want to hear meainstream music like this when I go out. I also don't appreciate the Busch light neon signs in the kitchen when you don't serve any blue collar beer. Is it ironic for hipsters to do this? The Dover Sole in beurre blanc finally comes out for my mom and wife and yes, it's good. The sauce is brilliant. Would've been more brilliant to have some pita bread or something to sop that stuff up with. But here's where these guys hit the mark EVERY TIME and why I don't mind taking my wife to these places even though I contemplated uber eats sending me a chicken sandwich. The desserts were ridiculous. They had two so we ordered both. One was some kind of homemade cake/bread with irish blue cheese and some fancy honey. That's what I love. Introducing my low class self to tastes I've never combined before that humble my fragile ego and make me want to tell everyone I know. The other dessert was some frozen ice, lychee, egg and more combo that was not only worth it's weight in gold but made sure I left feeling like all the BS was worth it. All in all, food was worth checking out if you're not half the a$& I am, love seafood, booze and low key atmosphere right in the middle of light gentrification where you can feel safe and go shopping for overpriced secondhand home furnishings.
Be the first to ReplyA special treat for lunch today at Locust!
We were warmly greeted when we arrived and I had quite a friendly chat with one of the servers. The restaurant was on many lists for the best in Nashville and it’s hard to get a reservation. I did get on the waiting list and as soon as I was told there was room today, I responded immediately. I want to say that Locust is Japanese fusion but that not might be completely accurate. It definitely has Japanese influence all over but it seems a bit broader than that. The seating is sparse as there are only eight tables, some four tops, some two tops. The menu is very limited but that’s the point! Try everything and if you’re still hungry then go back and order a dish you really liked. You can read other reviews about each of the menu items but let me simply say the tuna crisp (a thin slice of sashimi that is lightly smoked and a pinch of salt), lamb dumplings, and beef tartare roll were absolutely delicious. Make sure to top the meal off with kakigori, which is Japanese shaved ice with whipped milk on top. What I would also recommend is order the lemon Italian soda which served as a nice way to cleanse the palate before each new dish arrived. If you can get in, enjoy! We all loved it and plan to return.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding Gem
It was simply outstanding. The chefs deliver the food to the table, the food was delicious. It can ve a bit noisy as they like their music, bur this restaurant was a gem. Trevor is the chef-patron and he and his team are enthusiastic and engaged.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous meal.
Food was fabulous, from the pickled cucumbers (provided gratis), beef tartare (my personal fave), the dumplings, the Dover Sole with beurre blanc sauce, the coconut cream puff, to the shaved ice with a milk mousse. Next time we will have caviar with the beef tartare. Service was great. $25 corkage if you want to bring your own wine. Restaurant was loud, but it did not interfere with our conversation. Only criticism is that they need more beer choices. 20% service charge included.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food but super slow
The food is worthy of Michelin star, and service is friendly and warm, but they did not wear hair nets and had long curly hair in the kitchen and I had a hair in my food. I did not say anything because I did not want to ruin everybody's night. The service was way too slow. I had to request something three times. They need to get their act together in the kitchen. They need a system and not forget orders. Music was too loud for easy conversation too.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious but rushed
Holy smokes... delicious food! Elevates Nashville cuisine to a new level. The dumplings will change your life, as will the shaved ice. However, be aware that you should order more than you think you will need, and do so at the very beginning. The reservation system clearly says 1.5 hours for dinner, but we were getting the side eye after 55 minutes. We were so excited so see Trevor again after dining with him at the Catbird Seat, and the entire team was very skilled and very professional, but for the price, small portions and rushed vibe, we left disappointed. Totally get the need to turn tables, but this was not the relaxing experience we had hoped for. We did not even get a chance to order a drink with our dessert.
Be the first to ReplyBack For More Dumplings
We couldn't wait to go back for more dumplings, as well as Trevor's other wonderful food. We had the cucumbers with the delicious salt as well as oysters. 2 baskets of dumplings, 24, I believe, doesn't matter you could eat 48. In fact some of our friends went and had even more than that! We tried mackerel, it was good, although not one of our favorite fish. For dessert the almond ice box, that is fabulous. We love Trevor's new restaurant. Service was great, and of course Trevor was there making his delicious food and saying hello to everyone. We will be back very soon!
Be the first to ReplyTrevor's New Restaurant is Fantastic !!!
We have been a fan of Trevor Moran since we met him in 2013 at The Catbird Seat. His food was superb, we went twice before he left. Not only is he a great chef, he is the nicest guy, so warm and friendly. We also had been to Noma in Copenhagen where he had been a chef. It is consistently rated as one of the world's best restaurants. We heard he was opening a restaurant in Nashville. We were so excited to see him again and try some of his wonderful offerings. It is true it is a small menu, but you won't leave hungry. We had 5 of the 6 choices, listed as plates. All delicious especially the outstanding dumplings. They were so good we had an extra order. Shrimp toast was also very good, but rich so we shared one. The cucumbers were a nice addition, they were like a palate cleanser, so refreshing between courses and all by themselves as well. Noodles were great, albeit a little spicy for us. We skipped the beef tartare as we are not fans. I'll bet Trevor's is wonderful if you like tartare. For dessert we had the almond milk shaved ice, there were 2 choices. It was unbelievable. I have to say we have never had anything like it. We thought it would be a snow cone, but it is so much more. There is a moist cake in the middle and the almond milk is like an icing. The shaved ice is around this delicious concoction. They then drizzle salted caramel on the top. We almost skipped dessert !! Don't make that mistake !!! This is out of this world. I have to say the music is quite loud and the restaurant was very cold. We had an early reservation when they first opened so maybe that is why it was so cold. The cooks and servers are working at a brisk pace that could be another reason. I don't care!!! even if I have to wear an overcoat in the summer we are putting Locust at the top of our go to restaurants. We can't stop craving those dumplings or shaved ice. Service is great with a big hello from the staff when you enter. Can't wait to go back !!!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food. Short menu
Great food. Short menu with amazing and interesting choices. Service and staff very friendly. We ordered one of each item on the menu and then reordered some of them 🤪
Be the first to ReplyMelt in your mouth dumplings!
...And the shaved ice is soft as snow. These dumplings are like nothing you've ever had before. They have see-through thin wrappers that melt away to reveal a perfect amount of juicy, soft pork filling that is perfectly seasoned. You add as little or as much chili oil for your taste. Have you ever had shrimp toast at an Asian restaurant? Well, this is out of this world different, and oh so much better. The perfectly deep fried toast is literally stuffed with creamy ?mayo sauce with super tender whole shrimp, and you can dip it in sweet chile sauce. The chicken wings have been deboned, so that you can revel in the awesome flavor and meatiness. Dipping in the creamy XO sauce takes it over the top. My mistaken impression of "shaved ice" was like a crunchy snow cone. I couldn't have been more wrong. The cottony soft ice bowl surrounding the creamy shortbread/marmalade center was eye opening. I don't usually get desserts anymore, but I'm so glad I saved room for this! Chef Trevor Moran is the inspiration for all of this goodness. We loved his unique takes on foods and flavors when he was at The Catbird Seat 5 years ago (has it really been that long ago?), and it's fantastic that he's finally gotten his own place - hopefully to stay quite awhile! Prices are reasonable ($9 for 7 dumplings, $11 for chicken wings or shrimp toast, and $9 for a bowl of shaved ice). We wish they had more cocktail options, as the Toki highball was just ok. Service is friendly and fast. We had waited to come here, until we could dine indoors. They opened in Oct. 2020 for carryout and outdoor seating, with dine-in starting this week.
