Expect to pay $25 - $30 for cocktails here (plus tax and tip) but they have really interesting and inventive cocktails and a great vibe. The remodel has really transformed this into a stunning space that I like to take out of town friend to if I want to impress. It can get very packed but the wait is never as long as they say it will be (we mad the mistake of ordering drinks next door because they told us it would be 45 minutes, but it was closer to 10). Can't give it 5 stars due to the obscene pricing, but have never been disappointed here.

The location was well worth the price! Cannot say enough with how peaceful and quiet the room was, how amazingly comfortable the bed was, and how the hotel guest service was top notch! The AC worked great and the complimentary turndown service with bedtime potions (melatonin juice) and water were such great touches. Literally just a 20min walk to Times Square, or a quick 7-8 minute subway ride (btw, you can pay using the subway with a credit card). The interior of our room was so cool! The hotel bars fill up fast, so get down there early. This place is such a gem- you won't regret booking here!
Be the first to ReplyReally glad I spent a few extra bucks to stay here for
Really glad I spent a few extra bucks to stay here for three nights, rather than save a bit in some crap Sheraton et al, and spent a few bucks more for a balcony room (worth it). Still, for what you pay (which is plenty) you get a lot. Turn down service, plenty of other small amenities, and atmosphere for days. The building is simply stunning - marble, wrought iron, old tile fireplaces, marquetry designs in the parquet floors, a 50s Motherwell knockoff in my room, etc. The bar is so inviting and cozy that I stayed way too long and drank (and spent) way too much. Ate twice in the cafe which has the vibes of a pre-War Parisian cafe, and conveniently caught a comedy show at the Gotham next door. There's a great diner 1/2 block away, and most other amenities are close by. The art in the halls is frankly all pretty awful - I presume it's from all the forgotten crap artists who lived here over the decades and couldn't pay for their rooms. I'm sure there are masterpieces in the hotel collection, but those obviously aren't going to get hung in the stairwells. But it all adds character. The Chelsea location is great for getting anywhere in Manhattan. Staff are generally super friendly. It's a really quirky mix of casual elegance that is totally unique. I just loved it. Wish I could stay a month.

Super comfy bed, very courteous and helpful staff, beautiful vintage chic decor, and close to the Metro and excellent restaurants.
Be the first to ReplyThe only place we ever want to stay in NYC.
The attention to detail in design is outstanding. Thoughtful touches around every corner. The restaurants and bars are elegant, delicious, and friendly. A really special place and worth the money. The location is perfect to get to anywhere in the city and the unique history of the hotel adds a level of mystique and glamour. A very special mention to Michael and Marissa at the front desk who were so kind and generous during our stay! This hotel should be on everyone's list to try and, as a travel agent, it will be an easy sell to my groups and individual clients. Highly recommend!

Impressive remodel that has created an authentic nod to the legend that is The Hotel Chelsea. We stayed in a huge suite (10-Y) which was authentically appointed. A couple kinks still being worked out on the service side but those were quickly and proactively rejected with comps at The Lobby Bar and Cafe. We will most certainly return. The Lobby Bar and the Cafe Chelsea are lovely New York establishments in their own right.

Old world elegance with modern conveniences. Great location to enjoy NYC. The staff is consistently helpful, responsive and attentive.

It's not in the main hotel. It's dingy with subpar mattress and bedding.

I have lived in Chelsea for almost 40 years the hotel has always been in my heart I hated that things were changing but happy to see them keeping the essence of the hotel and had room for us regulars at the lounge since you can't get a table at el Quijote or cafe Chelsea unless you are staying at the hotel or an American Express platinum card it's almost impossible to get a Rez so it was nice having the lounge to go to for a drink and a burger for us regulars who have made Chelsea and that hotel what it is today they stopped making the burger instead you can get a crappy turkey sandwich they obviously don't care about the community that built them only for the rich clientele they cater to its very sad we lost something very special to us New Yorkers at least they have a wonderful staff especially the hostess Shania but you lost the soul of the Chelsea RIP

This hotel and the staff were absolutely amazing!! We were coming to NY from Las Vegas to elope and truly received the star treatment at this hotel! From the amazing front desk that checked us in early and upgraded us to the most fantastic room, to the bottle of wine and note they left, to the bellman that made us feel like old friends, to the amazing hosts, bartenders in each of the restaurants.... I felt like I never wanted to leave! I wish I had asked for more names of the staff that gave us amazing service, but just know that I will stay here time and time again. The Hotel Chelsea... the best hotel in NY!

Beautiful hotel, updated but they retained the character so well. Lovely and attentive staff, great location and surprisingly quiet for NYC, a fantastic visit that we look forward to doing again soon!

I had the absolute best staycation at the Chelsea for my birthday. Staff went above and beyond to get me the room I wanted and it was everything and more! The staff was so kind and helpful! The lobby bar is gorgeous and the waiters and bartenders were so attentive, our glasses were never empty! The door man was wonderful and remembered our names every time we came in and out. The building alone is a reason to stay, but the Hotel Chelsea staff made us feel at home immediately! Thank you for the best birthday!

Hi. My name is James and on the day of pride, the bouncer and Chris and Elizabeth refused to let us in. As a gay man, he made it seem like it was an exclusive event; however, every man inside said they were just there because of pride. My lesbian friends were denied entrance and Chris gave me no explanation. I understand the need to let gay people only in, but pride is a celebration of inclusivity and this club was the opposite. The only reason I gave two stars is because the bouncer was cool and responsive to our questions. Thanks for nothing Chris and Elizabeth

Even though I have never stepped inside of this iconic hotel, I love walking by and looking at its amazing architecture. What draws me in is its red-brick facade, black flower-ornamented iron balconies and the vertical "Hotel Chelsea" sign on the front. The Chelsea Hotel has been closed for many years for renovations. Built in the late 1800's, there is so much history here. The list of writers, musicians, artists and actors that have lived here is quite long. Andy Warhol's avant-garde art film "Chelsea Girls" documents the lives of the Warhol superstars and the women that lived here. Leonard Cohen wrote songs about his brief romance with Janis Joplin here and Bob Dylan wrote "Blonde on Blonde". Arthur Miller wrote "The Chelsea Affect" and Arthur C. Clarke wrote "2001: A Space Odyssey" while staying here. Madonna shot photos for her "Sex" book in one of the rooms. Some Titanic survivors stayed here briefly after docking at a nearby pier. Probably the most well-known story in pop history was the murder of Nancy Spungen by her boyfriend Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols in one of the rooms. Anyway, maybe someday when the doors open again, I'll book a room here and soak in my love for music and literate history.
Be the first to ReplyThis hotel is amazing.
We stayed a few years ago and I still have fond memories of opening the windows, watching the rain and listening to our neighbor play jazz all night.

Been years since I've been there and I hear it's closed but here goes:When I first started coming to NYC for dance training I stayed in every touristy upscale soulless overpriced hotel I could reconcile paying for, and then I found this place. Imagine French iron balconies, original works of art (poor artists legend has it paid for their rooms in art at one point in a more forgiving era), giant paper mache person hanging in the lobby, and windy little staircase up to marble-siled windows and french doors. I stayed there about 3x over the space of a couple of years and wanted to go back but found it was closed, some greediness I'm guessing but not really sure. I'd love to see it open for business again, it was just the kind of shabby chic place that made you not feel like a tourist getting robbed for clean sheets. The best of the kind of things I love in NY; a little dirty, a little wild, and a whole lot of character!
Be the first to Reply"I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel.
" I first heard the infamous Hotel Chelsea mentioned in the lyrics to Chelsea Hotel #2 - Leonard Cohen's brilliant ode to his relationship with Janis Joplin. The Chelsea later popped up in Bob Dylan's 1976 song Sara: "Staying up for days in the Chelsea Hotel writing Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands for you." I had to visit the hotel that served as an inspiration for so many of my favorite artists. I stayed at the Chelsea after attending the Broadway revival of Nine and left only hours before the New York blackout of 2003. Fourtanely I didn't get stuck in the hotel elevator, nor did I experience any of the hauntings the front desk man warned me about; Sid Vicious allegedly murdered his girlfriend in one of the Chelsea's rooms and the hotel has been prone to reported ghost sightings ever since. My room was fairly standard and indistinguishable from any other hotel room. I didn't stay at the Chelsea for luxury, but to stay in the same hotel that served as a temporary home to some of the most talented artists of the past several decades.

I cannot believe the Chelsea has been bought and is closed- and that it took me this long to hear about it!!! This is awful news. :(I've stayed here twice with my then-fiancee (now husband). My aunt suggested it to us the first time-- said she'd heard it was really affordable. I was really shocked to hear that, considering its extensive history. In this city, any excuse to charge more is a good one.But sure enough--our stay ran us just around $100 a night on both visits (last year and the year before)-- which is pretty much an unthinkable price in NY. The rooms were clean but humble-- nothing fancy whatsover-- but, in my opinion, that just added to the experience. The place definitely seemed untouched by the modern world and certainly more than a little haunted."Don't worry," warn articles. "The artwork will stay up." Yeah and the whole place will be redone and it'll suddenly cost at least 5 times more to stay there too, I'm sure! Or it'll just become swanky condos.RIP Chelsea Hotel. RIP CBGBs, Astroland, The Limelight (not to mention Twilo, Tunnel, Sound Factory, etc etc etc). RIP Lucky Cheng's (moving to Times Square = dead to me). The list could go on and on...What's happening to New York??

I used to sublet the very top apartment (Room # 1030) from a rich guy from Luxembourg who lived there for a long time. You had to sidestep a lot of silliness and drama, however, it was a great place to be.

While I was never a resident for an indefinite period of time, nor did I ever see Sid & Nancy, the tremendous horse portrait visible from the street is reason alone to warrant a 4 (the adjacent Spanish haunt is a 2.5 & DP offshoot a diluted 4, so this seems reasonable). Recent ownership causes me to fear that future walkersby may not be fortunate enough to experience the aforementioned work of art.
