9/10 the setting and ambience 9/10 the authenticity and quality of the food 2/10 attitude and attention to customers and personalization of service Our party of 3 included one native Japanese and a second person who has spent more than 10 years living in Japan. What a disappointment to find a really authentic Japanese restaurant experience diminished by a wait staff that could not make the customers feel welcome, and where we saw repeatedly through the evening an attitude of disrespect and haughtiness. The 2 waitresses seemed to lack grace, and a real interest in the customers’ experience. They did a poor job in resolving a water spill where the person involved failed to apologize to her neighbor and the staff was either unaware or choose not to make amends. Another customer spilled his miso soup on the counter and again, in most Japanese restaurants, this would have been handled promptly even asking if a replacement was desired. Our waitress seemed intent on selling us lobster (surcharged item) and could not easily facilitate refilling of the sake flask. On leaving, she was not attentive nor helpful in getting our coats. We noticed this happened to other guests as well. We felt pity on the chefs who prepared beautiful dishes, one after another. Even at the counter no engagement; no banter, conversation or small talk in either English, French or Japanese (the possibility was there as there were 4 separate parties sitting and watching every step. Just a perfunctory recitation of the ingredients comprising each course. The team needs some coaching on customer engagement and building customer rapport. The only sign of personal warmth was by the head chef who made an effort to say goodnight to our 90 year old guest who had enjoyed the meal and had asked lots of questions to us about what we were eating. He must have noticed. He came to the top of the staircase and said good night to us. I was appreciative of this act of respect and kindness by him.
