We decided to nob-knob with the yacht crowd at Kingfish during our recent trip to St. Augustine / Vilano Island. From the moment we arrived, we were pretty disappointed.
First, I was totally surprised to see plastic table cloths and a fairly run-down looking dining room overlooking this beautiful yacht landing. The menu was fairly parred down so I expected near perfection from the chef. That's not what we received, though.
First, we ordered oysters. It was 7 p.m., and they were out of oysters. So, we ordered a sushi roll (a Bubba Gump). The roll itself was pretty good but nothing special -- nothing I wouldn't find in other areas of the country.
Then, we decided to share an entree. We had been over-indulging for the previous few days and both thought sharing would be a great idea so we could enjoy the rest of the evening. We selected Shrimp & Scallop Alla Vodka, which was described as flambéed with vodka finished with a tomato, cream sauce & penne pasta. The scallops did not seem flambeed. In fact, they seemed warmed up -- that's about it. And, the tomato cream sauce had absolutely no depth of flavor. It was bland...absolutely bland. It was garnished with a bit of parmesan cheese but nothing else -- no herb -- nothing fresh. Much of the penne was actually clumped. The dish was orange and sad-looking. Plus, the dish did not come with any type of bread or crackers or anything you'd expect to see with a pasta dish.
We finished with a slice of keylime pie, which was good but nothing I'd describe to friends as being a great part of a meal in St. Augustine.
Basically, we were very disappointed. We expected far more, and what we thought would have been a high point for dining on our vacation ended up being a low point. We had far better meals.
