Such an incredibly special place.
Every bite was outstanding and Ken's vibes were second to none. I have spent a lot of time in Japan and this felt just like a spot in you would find tucked away in Tokyo. Phenomenal and worth every penny, thank you Ken and can't wait to come back.
Be the first to ReplyKen is the ultimate omakase experience.
With just 7 seats, one enters and will immediately feel special. Ken is gracious and so welcoming, sweetly beaming as he shares details about each dish as he presents to you. The entire evening was exquisite - tastes we have never experienced before in a beautiful serene and modern atmosphere. We highly recommend Ken and cannot wait to return.

Was very good comfy and the staff seemed like they were having a good time but value wasn't the best compared too much cheaper places with same fish quality and quantity

I've sat in sushi bars, really fine ones, and I know how hard this guy worked, how proud he is. I know you don't need sauce. I know he doesn't even want you to pour sauce. And I've seen customers come in and do that, and I've seen him, as stoic as he tries to remain, I've seen him die a little inside -- Anthony Bourdain Per his website: "Originally from Hong Kong, Chef Ken has over 20 years of experience as a sushi chef. In his early career, he worked in the restaurant scene in San Francisco including staging at multiple Michelin star restaurants. This led to his passion for sushi when he became a chef at Sushi Ran and then Sous Chef at Kusakabe, both working under Chef Mitsunori Kusakabe." This was an omakase experience second to none. Just six people, with Ken, eating for two hours course after course of wonderful and artful cuisine. The dishes will change of course, but this was a rare meal worth the hundreds of dollars that I paid for food, wine, sake, tip. I'd happily do this again, no questions asked. It's that good, that serene and calm, and yes, I never used sauce ;-) Highly recommended for a unique experience that is worth saving up for.
Be the first to ReplyVery intimate sushi experience.
We always have fun and usually drink too much sake. Of the SF omakase options KEN is among the top tier.
Be the first to ReplyIntimate and detailed omakase experience! Reservations only
Intimate and detailed omakase experience! Reservations only with each seating limited to 7 people total. Ken is very interactive and explains each item when served. It's great being able to watch the items getting assembled and the opportunity to ask any questions. Some of the items include fish that he's aged himself. As others say here as well, great experience and an amazing option for special occasions.

Just realized i forgot to review ken! Came a year ago for my birthday and its was spectacular! delicious food and super friendly chefs. the pictures will speak for themselves. AMAZING!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food, intimate setting, great experience.
Came here for my birthday and they even printed a happy birthday message onto my menu! Ken does a great job explaining each dish and the nuances behind the taste. It was interesting and fun getting to see each dish being made and plated. Comes to about ~$300 per person, more if you opt for extra sushi!

Two years after discovering their takeout, I was lucky enough to try the dine-in omakase experience at Ken. The place is tiny and seats only 6 people a night so it feels like you're eating in a friend's kitchen. Chef Ken (formerly at Kusakabe) is humble, personable, and fun and chatted with us the whole evening as they prepared each dish. I was amazed at how much thought and care went into every bite. Even a simple tomato slice is transformed into a magical parcel of flavor. Everything about the evening - the food, the simple and minimalist decor, the casual banter, the quiet Studio Ghibli jazz music playing in the background - comes together to create a mood that is quite subliminal but fundamentally alters your emotional state and transports you to another place and time. Only when you emerge from the unmarked door back onto the street at the end of the meal does that impact hit you. Dining at Ken is truly an unforgettable experience, one of the best meals I've ever had and possibly will ever have.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious Omakase - feels like being in Japan.
I loved their Uni and their depth of flavour in the sushi - some nigiris with cinnamon notes, some with with cherry blossom leaves. My favourites were the otoro and shima aji sashimi and the custard soup. The chef explains every single dish and is quite funny. Great service, small and cozy ambiance and ultimately just great sushi. The sushi is the main attraction, so don't go expecting for wagyu, large options of appetizer or crazy deserts. It's all about the fish and it's freshness.
Be the first to ReplyA stunning Edomae sushi counter with a high price tag
A stunning Edomae sushi counter with a high price tag justified by an incredible meal with a superstar sushi chef. I loved my time at this beautiful spot that serves some of the best sushi in San Francisco (and I've been to most of these higher-end Omakase spots). The two-uni bite was among the best things I've had this year. Service is typical of a sushi counter, but the chef is playful and fun.

Each omakase restaurant is unique because of each chef's past experience with sushi/Japanese cuisine/ and culture. Although I had a great time in this environment, I was disappointed with the food flavors and the quantity. I was actually quite hungry after my meal (even when I had all the add-ons). I had to request water about 20 minutes into the meal. They didn't offer water. Atmosphere was nice and peaceful. But the frustration with the flavors of the sashimi left me wanting something more unique. I would NOT recommend the rice with corn and chopped oysters. It was way too dry.

Let me start by admitting that Ken's omakase experience is NOT CHEAP. Without drinks, their $225 omakase rounds out to just under $300 with tax and tip, so this is definitely a special occasion type spot. But special occasion it does deliver, especially since each seating is only around 6-7 diners, and each seat gives you a full 2-hour display of Chef Ken's craft and the dedication he has to his style and his vision for his sushi.I also am biased towards sushi spots that do a great job of lightening up what are usually pretty formal omakase experiences with a little bit of light banter and conversation with the chef. Chef Ken did a great job of *trying* to engage us in conversation, and sharing about how he treated / cured / aged / concocted each dish or each piece of nigiri. The first couple of dishes left me feeling like there could've been a TAD more flavor in the sashimi, but I slowly came around to appreciate how this style truly brought out what the team at Ken is doing with their fish. In the chef's own words, everybody can serve fish fresh off the plane from Japan, but by ageing / curing it anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, he brought out unique flavors that I did not expect from what were familiar pieces of fish / nigiri. It was truly an experience!
Be the first to ReplyThis was so absolutely worth the money.
Ken and his assistant were so attentive and easy to talk to. And each section of the omakase was better than the one before. At the end of the night my friend asked what my favorite part was and I truly couldn't decide. The ambiance is also so nice and super clean. I cannot recommend this experience more. I was vaguely nervous beforehand that I would be given something that I didn't like but chef Ken is so talented and skilled that every piece was perfect. It may be expensive but it is 10000000% worth it.
Be the first to ReplyA sushi experience I'll never forget.
The food was, of course, amazing and delicious. I loved each dish and piece thoughtfully prepared by Chef Ken.The service was great too - Ken was very friendly, funny and knowledgeable. Him and his assistant really worked well together.I loved the ambiance. It's a very small, private place that feels inviting.

An amazing and memorable sushi experience, with a unique emphasis on aged fish. All the reviews that say it's like an intimate dinner party are spot on. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyA wonderfully intimate omakase experience.
I came by for dinner on Sunday, after luckily snagging reservations. For some reason, the seats are available on RESY starting around 11:30pm, so I missed getting a spot for Saturday. Anyways, parking in that area wasn't too difficult. The interior has 7 seats at the bar. Some people came a bit late (20-30 mins) so Chef Ken started serving the first dishes. He only has one other person helping him, so the service isn't as polished compared to other restaurants, but there are no issues; my water glass was always filled. The food here is delicious! Ken described how most of his sashimi is aged, and the texture is amazing. So many pieces melt in your mouth. You can definitely taste the quality. The rice is also delicious, he serves it slightly warm but it's the perfect ratio of fish to rice and the rice is well seasoned. The toro was one of the best I've ever had. Ken is also really personable, our group was pretty quiet but he got us all laughing. It felt like eating omakase at a friend's house, which is really unique compared to the other experiences I've had. He also has a nice selection of sake, and gives great recommendations. His restaurant is still fairly new, so I am excited to see how the menu and dishes develop over time. Overall, the omakase here is amazing, and Ken is a great guy. I would highly recommend.

I have a higher bar for fusion as I feel it requires a mastery of the original cuisine with a vast understanding of ingredients and flavor for unique collaborations to truly shine... and Ken does it, and does it extremely well. It's an intimate restaurant next to a pizza shop that seats just a handlful of people, creating an intimate experience into some very delicious dishes that are traditional and yet very unique. You must come at the arranged time as the dishes are served for all attendees together. The beer and sake options were also broad and interesting.Definitely would come back. Worth every bit of the wait and the cost.
Be the first to ReplyKen Ratings: 4.
6/5 Food: 5/5 - My boyfriend took me to Ken just because I wanted to go, no special occasion. Ken definitely stands out from most of the city's omakase. There's perfectly prepared sashimi, flawlessly made nigiri pieces, and creative small plates. You would want to see the description of the omakase experience we had below. Omakase [GET]: Presentation of the food was on point and nicely presented. Chef Ken has his own way of interpreting sushi, and most of the sushi are aged over 2 weeks. I loved all the flavors and texture of the fish, especially the uni (the best uni I've ever had, bursting of fatty, sweet, and fresh goodness in my mouth), but the 8 sushi plus the handroll were all fantastic and executed beautifully. Pro tip is to eat the sushi right away, and appreciate the flavors in each, such as smoky, acidity, and citrusy. The sushi rice was cooked perfectly too. The Dungeness crab soup was silky, creamy, and soft, literally melts in your mouth. The only downside about the meal was the fried rice, because it was a bit bland, a tab bit of salt would be perfect, but I am just nitpicking at this point. The desserts are a nice touch at the end of the meal. Ambiance: 4.25/5 - Located in Lower Haight on Divisadero. The dining room is intimate with only six seats available. We did the sushi counter experience where you can see Chef Ken does his magic with the fish and other ingredients. I appreciate that it almost felt like having dinner at Chef Ken's house, like a family meal. The other 4 people was nice, and entire dinner was on the quieter side until we started to warm up with each other. Price: 4.5/5 - The omakase is $175 for a total of 9 courses, and after tax and tips, it came up to be $225 per person. It consists of small bites, sashimi, 8 pieces of sushi and handrolls, soup and sweets. There are add-ons available and sake for purchase. We were quite full afterwards, definitely worth it, great experience. Service: 4.5/5 - There's only Chef Ken and his sous chef there that evening. Chef Ken is down-to-earth and friendly, initiating conversations and really getting to know us. He always gives the food to the ladies first, Haha. The sous chef is attention to detail, my water glasses is not empty, and ginger are constantly coming my way. All silverwares are shinny and clean, intimate space, so definitely a Michelin level customer service. BLUF: All in all, my boyfriend and I had a lovely meal and we both enjoyed the omakase, the company of 4 other foodies, and Chef Ken's approachable demeanor and personality. Dining at Ken is an UNMISSABLE experience for anyone who loves fish and appreciate the flavors in traditional omakase and open to the uniqueness of Ken's creative approach and twist on sushi too! You will not regret dropping big bucks here.
