Amazing Kaiseki Dinner
This was an amazing dinner. Yamagami actually opened in 2018, taking over from the previous owner who he worked under as his right hand man. Previous negative reviews therefore are about the old restaurant, not Yamagami and it appears some aspects have changed significantly.
It's a very small operation but they churn out amazing stuff. The chef knows some English and was very warm and accommodating. Pictures are allowed. They may not have Michelin stars (yet) and they might not have a high Tabelog score (only because of Tabelog's weighting from the low review count) but I strongly urge you not to be dissuaded by the negative reviews.
One more comment. Food was, of course, absolutely amazing. One unique thing was that they gave me OPTIONS for a couple of the courses (grilled and rice I think). OPTIONS! Didn't get that at any of the 3 other highly rated Kaiseki places I went to. This was in spring 2019 and for the rice course I opted for seasonal, which turned out to be bamboo. I never knew bamboo rice (and the take home riceballs) could be so freaking amazing. Mind blown.
For another write-up, you can look up a detailed one at Tableall. Keep in mind that the total fee there only makes sense to me if you include 8% VAT, 10% service charge, and their booking fee (and then there's still a little bit to go). Reservations are probably required, whether you choose to do that through Tableall, your hotel, or one of the other reservation services out there.
Tokyo's Worst Kaiseki Restaurant!
1) This restaurant has a fierce no photo policy and is strictly enforced.
2) The head chef and owner is more concerned about photos taken of the dishes rather than the quality of the dishes itself. He is always checking to see if you are using a camera or handphone instead of focusing on cooking the dishes!
3) Foreigners or tourists who are not fluent in Japanese will be seated at the end seats of the dining bar. Only locals and regulars will be seated in the middle.
4) No explanation of dishes to people who do not speak Japanese. But chef or service staff will explain to Japanese customers only.
5) Grossly overpriced and lacking in quality compared to the countless other Michelin starred restaurants in the Roppongi or Minato area.
6) Have eaten here three times and it never fails to disappoint. It's not the seasonal ingredients but more to do with the chef's capabilities and skill. This will definitely be our last time and have been put on the AVOID AT ALL COSTS list.
7) Dishes have neither taste nor is it exquisitely presented unlike other kaiseki restaurants.
8) Worst service ever in a kaiseki restaurant. Even if you are paying for the most expensive dinner set meal.
9) Chef did not bother saying goodbye or thank you as is customary in other fine dining venues.
10) Drink orders and dishes took a long time even though the restaurant is not full.
11) Save your time and money - do not bother coming to this restaurant! There are hundreds of better alternatives out there in Tokyo.
12) The assumption that no photos are allowed here is probably to disavow any evidence of the terrible food, the blandness of the decor and the unsmiling chef's scorn for paying customers.

The worst dinning experience I ever had in Tokyo!
I made the booking for counter seat about 2 months in advance and they confirmed counter seat at first. But about two weeks before the dinning date they suddenly told us that we have to seat in the private dining room due to some special reasons. It is very odd to us but anyway we didn't change our plan.
On that day, I booked the special menu in lunch (25,000 yen) Suppose this already be the most expensive menu for lunch according to the hotel who help us book and Tabelog.com but the shop didn't serve their best dish they have such as shirako, crab and soft turtle fish!
We found this out because a big group of Chinese people are having all the dishes above outside the counter seats. Then we asked the owner why they didn't serve the top dish and they replied because they ordered a very special menu which costs 70,000 yen per head!
This is so ridiculous! Suppose 25,000 yen lunch set should include all these dishes according to tabelog.com. Because they charged someone 70,000 yen for this they downgraded our set in order to differentiate the price difference between two sets!
That's why they moved us to private dinning room so that we won't found out we were not served the best dishes they had even though we ordered the most expensive set for lunch.
The restaurant cheated both us and the customers who paid 70,000 yen. This is totally unacceptable!
Last leg from New York
An excellent place to try out local cooked and raw Japanese food, the place doesn't allow their guests to wear perfume nor take any photos. Recommended!
