😒 3/5 - Beware the service charge policy

We had dinner last night. Food was good, although I don’t think it lived up to the hype. It’s a good pizza restaurant, without being a great one. Meal came to about $200 for a family of 4 which is expensive considering what we ate - but again no particular complaints here. When we settled our cheque I was surprised to see that the restaurant added the standard 18% service charge. But then made clear this should not be viewed as a tip for your waiter/waitress, but rather something that would be used to cover the cost of all of the restaurant staff working in the kitchen, on reception etc etc. You are encouraged to tip your waiter / waitress directly. I’m sorry but that is just not how it works - why should restaurant guests be expected to cover a restaurant’s staffing costs? If you charge $200 for 4 pizzas and a few sides, then you can afford to pay your staff. Then leave your guests to tip the waiting staff directly. That’s standard practice in all restaurants around the world for a reason.
