Exceptional restaurant
Joe Beef exceeded my high expectations. The food and drinks was delicious. Amazing surf and turf. Exceptional restaurant in Montreal.

We found this restaurant in a guidebook, which said it was a must for Montreal. To be fair you would struggle to get a poor meal here but this restaurant is pure, warm Canadian hospitality and a lovely vibe. Having seen some less complimentary reviews on here, I was a bit concerned, but it turned out to be completely unfounded. Firstly it was booked out on the only night of our trip that we could go, so not to be put off we joined the wait list as there was snow forecast. A couple of hours later, we got a lovely text saying they had a table for two for us. 💪💪 It is very compact when you go in, but it adds to the charm. Lots of wood, pictures, low lighting… coats are hung in a narrow corridor which is fun when you try to find them at the end 😜. Luckily one of the team was more on the ball than us and discovered them behind a door. The wait staff are absolutely lovely - nothing is too much trouble and you don’t feel at all rushed. They’re very knowledgeable about the food, but make sure you know your budget because it’s not cheap. I’m not saying that because it’s a bad thing, but just so you’re clear before you go and it doesn’t present a problem. That said you definitely get what you pay for. I didn’t take photos because we were too busy stuffing our faces! We had steak tartar and oysters to start. Initially I only had 3 oysters but then had to order another three because they were gorgeous. So fresh! We both had aged roasted pork for main with a side of carrots and a sweet sauce. Melt in the mouth meat, attractively presented in slices. We shared a Marjeline cake dessert which was HUGE. My husband had two beers, a wine and coffee; I had a Coca Cola and a wine. The whole bill with tip was just under CAD $300. The menu changes daily I believe - one side is in French and the other English. But if you don’t understand something on it, just ask. The team there is only too happy to help. If you don’t ask, you only have yourself to blame!! Enjoy, it’s bloody fabulous. Thanks for a fantastic night Joe Beef 😘😘.

This is our second time at Joe Beef. We were here many years ago and loved our experience then so much that we had to come back. We were not disappointed! The ambiance was bumping (we were seated at the back which appeared to be more chill than the front area). The food was hit after hit. The bone marrow flan was melty and sumptuous. I literally could have just kept eating that all night. We also had the shared duck dish, which was perfect for 2 people. The service was top shelf, attentive and entertaining :D We finished the evening with the Epoisse (cheese) and crepes. My wife LOVED the cheese dish (super melty shoe stinky cheese is not to my taste) and I enjoyed the Joe Beef take on crepes suzette. Our takeaway was how reasonably priced it was for what you got. We've been o NYC and Chicago within the last year, and the sticker shock (for value) was a huge issue (exchange notwithstanding). Joe Beef delivered a homey, fun take on food that we can't wait to come back for.

Food is really amazing. Not surprised it is consistently rated one of the best restaurants in Canada. Really enjoyed the lobster spaghetti and steak. The wine selection was great too.

I wanted to see for myself if all the popularly was accurate. It certainly was. I went during the week and was able to get 1 spot at the bar. It was tight quarters but that wasn’t a concern. Even though I was solo the server treated me like was sitting at a table of 6. I started with a cocktail and was given an explanation of the menu. I asked for recommendations and ordered accordingly. I started with the steak tartare. Like everything else I ate, perfectly balanced, perfectly seasoned. Meaty, good acid, some crunch. The dish was my favorite. Beef marrow and egg white “flan” with a tomato sauce. This was amazing. Great texture, great flavor. The tomato sauce went perfect with the flan. With the egg whites whipped in it was much lighter than a true flan. I and the hen breast next. Rarely would I order chicken but it was recommended. The chicken was tender and moist, but the sauce was amazing. Along with the caramelized endive another great combo. I kind of which there was some browning on the chicken but I was great. I was given a wine pairing to go with each item and enjoy the combinations. Make reservations way in advance especially for weekends but I thoroughly enjoyed my experience.

Amazing food experience. I've been going twice a year for 6 or 7 years and not once has this establishment disappointed me. The staff is friendly and approachable. The food is epic every time, and the menu changes regularly. At this point we have our favorite waiter, Leo. This guy is a star. We just sit, and ask him to bring food. We don't need to pick and choose, he does it better than anyone. Impeccable taste, presentation and ambiance. 5 stars still, even after all these years

Food wasn’t that great Way over priced 20 years I want to try this restaurant Very disappointed

If you're looking for Spago , this is not the place for you.Something uniquely quirky Montreal. My daughter found it via TikTok. The decor is rustic, but with a touch of cosmopolitan. The front could be a butcher shop. An amusingly unpretentious place with great food. I had a scotch-based cocktail called penicillin. Signature plate lobster spaghetti swimming in a butter sauce was great. As was smoked trout with cheese/caviar and I'm a burnt Ego waffle the flavors came together! 😘. Dessert was a crepe folded around house made banana ice cream swimming in freshly made caramel sauce. So much butter!

It wouldn't be a foodie trip to Montréal without a visit to Joe Beef, so I was glad to be able to get a reservation on a Friday night to try it out for myself! I was dining solo this night and the restaurant caters extremely well to solo diners, with an extensive section of bar seating where you can watch the action and chat with other solo diners who have come for the experience. The food was fantastic. I started with a sampling of all the different types of oysters they had on offer, followed by escargots and then their claim to fame, the lobster spaghetti. Believe the hype, this was incredible! There was a generous amount of lobster and the pasta was so creamy, like no pasta I've tasted before. Remember to save room for dessert as well, their Marjolaine cake is incredible! Service from the guys behind the bar was excellent, they were really friendly with all the guests and very knowledgeable about all the food and drink options. When I enquired about a glass of wine to accompany my lobster spaghetti they asked me a couple of questions about preferences, thought about it, said "Done" and returned minutes later with a bottle of red which matched my preferences perfectly! Joe Beef was a perfect way to end my time in Montréal and there are plenty of elements of this meal that I'll be dreaming about for years to come. These are people who know and love their food, and it shows. Would definitely recommend!

Heard from a friend that Joe Beef was doing vegetarian options. I thought that meant they added vegetarian stuff to the menu. Went there with my vegetarian bf and there were no vegetarian things on the menu so the chef made us a special 4 course meal. Lol. This must be what it’s like to be the queen of England.

I was looking forward to eating at Joe Beef for long time. After entering the restaurant, staff was polite and made sure to keep your glasses filled. Looked at the menu and realized very few items on the said menu, but worst of all I was looking at what was mostly a seafood menu with very little beef on it. My wife had lamb and said she had never tasted lamb as good as that. I took the filet mignon, and ate only half. It was not good at all. My salad was delicious, dessert was to die for. But as I found out afterwards, the menu is always changing. So if like beef I suggest you go elsewhere to get the meat that you enjoy. Anyways, this is what I experienced when I went. Oh and by the way........ they do not serve cream for your coffee only milk. I told the waiter that even Tim Hortons had cream. What the hell!!!!!

A bunch of people recommended that we dine here in Montreal. Extremely underwhelming, especially for the price. Both beef dishes were unevenly cooked medium-well to well-done (not asked for cooking preference, and we realized this after the fact). We were brought the wrong bottle of wine twice. Unfortunately, this restaurant did not meet our expectations.

Absolutely incredible! Mike made our experience so much better with great cocktails and helping us navigate the menu! This is a must visit place in Montreal!
Be the first to ReplyGood, but not life-changing
I think like most people who venture to Joe Beef, our expectations were just way too high from watching the exploits of Anthony Bourdain and his visits and partying with founder David McMillan . I will say that we had exceptional service here, and enjoyed our meal, but its very expensive. I think the price point is set above the quality of the food, as demand continues to exceed supply (of tables). Its a quaint restaurant off the beaten path a bit - easy to get to and very cosy. Morels (which are hard to come by for us in the US) were very tasty, and I recommend the excellent fresh oysters - those were highlights. Perhaps rather than a full dinner, you might get a drink and a couple small plates to wet your whistle and have a more enjoyable experience than we had.

First things first, my partner and I didn't expect that Joe Beef would have a Michelin star so my partner and I's expectation were close to none. Secondly, The service was impeccable! We were able to do reservation at very last minute and they welcomed us with such warmth and enthusiastic vibe. Lastly, THE FOOD. As a chef for almost a decade now and have been a hundreds of restaurants and I can honestly say that Joe Beef is legit and more. The experience was stellar and I 100% recommend it to every single one who loves to eat good food.

For the first time Joe Beef was terrible, my duck was cold and all I could taste was salt! The razor clam was simply that, one chopped up clam, tasteless! and $15! I was even disappointed in the cocktail! It was in a 4 oz glass I think, maybe 2 sips, sorry Joe Beef, what used to be exceptional is now simply awful. Will never go back 😢

Wow! What a horrendous experience! They sat us at the bar in the back which was fine with us. We ordered butternut squash soup which was good. We ordered the endive salad which we expressed we don’t like goat cheese and the bartender said it was just a mild taste. It definitely is goat cheese heavy but they immediately took that off our bill. We ordered the beef bourguignon it was accompanied with garlic butter egg noodles. Beef bourguignon is a slow decadent dish the meat should fall apart. That was not the case the dish was disconnected and had no flavor. On top of that maybe you should educate the staff that just because someone speaks English doesn’t mean we don’t speak French. We didn’t appreciated over hearing the insults about us!

Excellent friendly service , outstanding food, great atmosphere. What Montreal has best to offer. Highly recommended
Be the first to ReplyEclectic, funky and fun with amazing food!
We have been wanting to try this restaurant for so long, but between COVID shutdowns and the difficult task of getting a reservation at this always busy place, it has taken awhile. SO worth the wait though! We have had the good fortunate to dine at several of the best restaurants in the world, and Joe Beef is now counted in as one of our all time favourites. Food and service were simply amazing. As others have mentioned, the (fairly extensive) menu is in French and all sounded so good when our server explained the dishes that we just told her to bring us whatever she liked. Best decision we made as every dish she chose was fantastic. The house staple, lobster spaghetti, lived up to its name. The foie gras (two different dishes as we told our server we liked it and she listened!) was possibly the best we have ever had. Peach cream dessert, again, amazing. The atmosphere is eclectic, funky and fun (we were in the back room- the rooms towards the front looked a bit more "standard"). This is not one of your stuffy, pretentious restaurants. So glad this place exceeded our already high expectations. Stalk the website for a reservation. You will not regret it.

I do not know where to start. It is perhaps the most memorable meal I have had and will ever have. Thanks Benji, Noah, my man Georges, and the whole crew at Joe Beef. The level of the product, preparation, wine pairing, service, incredibly creative cooking, is well beyond what many Michelin star restaurants could ever offer. Don’t ever change and thanks again.

Look, this is NOT a ‘$40 a head’ dinner - and thank God for that! Every single time I have had the absolute pleasure of scoring a seat - any seat, anywhere - I have enjoyed a service and dining experience that is second to none. I travel the globe for work, and travel often, and THIS is one of my top 3 in the world (my personal fave). I will re-route my way home and stay a night in the city on my own dine just to eat here. Be prepared for a menu that’s in French (hey, this isn’t Boulder, Halifax, Reading, or Beijing), servers who are passionate about their craft and the food they recommend (and who may recommend pricier things because they legitimately feel you may love them…never to run up a bill), some dishes that sound borderline bizarre (and are usually the best there is on the night), and a non-stuffy vibe that is infectious. These people all love what they do (try reading the prologue to their cookbooks) and are dedicated to what’s fresh and in-season. I can’t recommend a dish because it all depends on what’s available (although La Gouveneur steak, crispy Brussel sprouts, tarragon and truffle marrow custard, escargots, trout - any style, and peaches William are a few absolute faves). I’ve invited 11 different friends to my table over the years (and referred far more) and all have raved that this place truly is unique, perfect, and one of the world’s best restaurants (especially if they have the Bugey Ceredon in stock). It’s the perfect intersection of brilliant cooking, kooky but passionate and attentive service, and an authentic vibe. Don’t be shy about sharing what you do and don’t like (although this is the place to try new things - I had an Eau de Vie tonight that was amazing…and I usually can’t stomach the stuff), that you’re on a budget (recommendations are made with passion, not for price, but some can get pricey), and even more so, asking tour server to guide your choices (more than anywhere I’ve ever dined, everyone here truly knows their stuff and sincerely recommends things they think you’ll love). Trip 15 done. See you soon for #16.
Be the first to ReplySo Torn On How to Review This Place
I'm very conflicted on a review for Joe Beef. Prior to going, I had heard RAVE reviews from a lot of very respected foodies so my expectations were really high as a result. I booked a reservation online as soon as reservations opened for the day we were going and the only reservation was the last one of the night. This might be why our experience wasn't great. We arrived at 10 pm and our table wasn't ready until 20-30 minutes after our reserved time. We were told they'd grab us drinks while we waited but they left us on the patio; it almost seemed like we were forgotten. After getting to our table it took another 20 minutes or so to finally get our wine. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is overwhelming here to not understand anything on the menu but I was confident that our waiter would walk us through what to order. Instead, he just lightning-fired literally every ingredient from every dish (and there are a lot) at us in a volume that was barely comprehensible so we felt very unsure about what we were ordering after that. We asked more follow up questions but you could tell he was super annoyed to answer more questions. That's the first part of our experience and we were all just a little dismayed after having such high expectations. Once the food came out everything was absolutely delicious, as promised. The sauces are decadent, the meats are cooked to perfection, the vegetables to die for when paired so expertly. The portions are hearty. Overall, it was a special meal as far as the food's taste/quality went but the actual experience was pretty dreadful. From reading other reviews it just seems like you're taking a little bit of a gamble and to be honest I'm not sure if it's worth it; especially considering the cost.

We had heard of good reviews from friends, and saw many favorable reviews with some concerning ones as well. Well, our experience was like several others, a very disappointing evening, uncomfortable surrounding (very warm inside, too close for comfortable dining and conversation) ok service and very disappointing food. The oysters were just fine, but the shucker would blow on each oyster after opening. Seriously! The salads were fine. I had the halibut, very tender, small portion soaking in a “warm milk bath” yuck. My wife had the duck, it was way over cooked, very tough and very gamy. A $75.00 btl of wine and the tab with tax was $355. You can eat at several other restaurants at a fraction of that and feel good about the experience. Not here.

Amazing. First time back in 3ish years due to the pandemic - and was as good as I remembered. The food, wine and ambiance was amazing. We were a group of 4 and requested the woman serving us bring us what she/the chef recommended. It did not disappoint. Most of our party had been in the past and wanted to try a variety of dishes. With a wine/drink list this substantial there is really something for everyone - including delicious mocktails, teas and coffee for those who don’t drink or are bringing minors. We had more delicious food than I can possibly mention. But some highlights for me were amazing oysters from Quebec and PEI, beef tartar with fresh mustard, fresh tuna salad in tomato, duck breast, escargot with this amazing sauce with perfect levels of spice. Added to this, I have an egg allergy. We had several courses to share - with a huge variety of foods. All without egg or egg products. All mouthwatering. This included dessert - and hands down the best vanilla Icecream I have ever tasted. Especially eggless Icecream. Then the service. Every single member of the staff that served us were amazing. They were attentive without hovering. Friendly and professional and it just added that extra bit to the experience. This experience was worth every penny. Start to finish - the perfect meal.
Be the first to ReplyMediocre at best
Apparently this used to be the top restaurant in Montreal, but the meal we had there was a big "meh", like nobody was making an effort in the kitchen. The raw oysters were good, but even those had shell in them. The cocktails were tiny and pretty expensive for a place that only offers one gin and one vodka. The food was ok, that's the most I can say... after some mediocre starters and mains we waited 20+ minutes for a depressed, lukewarm clafoutis, limp and grim. However, the restaurant still prices itself as if it is the best in the city. 100% NOT WORTH IT.
