Jikoni? More like JikoNo-thanksI've been Yelp Elite several years now, and typically visit Michelin star restaurants 2x times a week. Have dined everywhere from Arzak to Noma. Those are my creds. In short, Jikoni = Just Atrocious Service + Clueless waitstaff and managers + So-So food! Two thumbs down, way down!My boy cousins took me there for my birthday this evening. Since we could not get a table at a later time, we were booked for 6:30. Even when we booked the table, the person on the line said we would have to "eat fast" as they would need the table back by 8:30. Reasonable request, I guess, but weird way to put it! But when we asked to add another person to the table they said, "that would be difficult, because you would take longer to eat, as there would be more people, and we need the table back by 8:30". As if, we would be taking turns eating sequentially. without overlapping each others' "eating time". What drivelWhen we arrived, on time, at 6:30, no sooner had we sat at our table, did the server, who also is the restaurant manager start hounding us to place our orders. We hadn't even said our hellos to each other and caught as some of my cousins were in town from the US OR for that matter placed our drinks orders. It was mentioned that it was a birthday dinner, yet she kept hounding us to place our entire order (starters, mains etc.). What manners! In the meanwhile, another table of mixed company was sitting there waiting for their entire party to arrive, and that took 30 mins. They were not disturbed by the manager one bit. Instead all attention was devoted to shooing us away as soon as possible. Did it have to do with the fact that we were 5 Asian males (without partners, spouses who happened to be traveling this weekend)? Who know, what entered in their bird brains? Although, everyone at the table is perfectly respectable (e.g. MBAs from top schools, finance professionals), and I myself live a few blocks from the restaurant in Marylebone. Been a resident for 8 years. But couldn't help feeling that we were unwelcome. Ironic, given we are ethically Indian, and Jikoni is fusion Indian. They screwed up the drink order. When they were serving or clearing plates, they leaned over seated guests, across the table to serve guests seated at the other side of the table. They brought our food out and took it to a different table, then brought it back to ours. Then they asked, "Who had the lamb? Who had the sloppy joe?" This ain't a diner in Arkansas, darlin'. Which hospitality school did you go to? This is basic service etiquette! And did I mention that they kept rushing us, and not in an attentive way? When I complained to another manager, she first incorrectly accused us of being 30 minutes for our reservation. When I called bullshit she said, that we didn't place our orders for 30 mins after being seated. Also, bullshit! And, when I mentioned that it was rude for servers to keep rushing us or to be leaning across the table to clear dishes rather than going around, she had the impertinence to say "Are you telling me how to do me job?" She actually said that to a paying customer, and I asked her if she had heard what had just come out of her mouth, and whether a job in the service industry was the right one for her.At no points were the words "sorry" or "how can we make this better for you" uttered. Only defensiveness, excuses and downright idiotic justifications, to the tune of, "We need to turn tables". The owners should FIRE the current managers and waitstaff and start all over again. Its clear they've been incentivized to turn tables at the cost of customer service. All, said we were done 30 mins before our table was due back, and walked out in a huff. Really spoilt my birthday dinner and a reunion with my cousins who had flown in from the US.Oh and the food was barely eh! Just plain ol' gimmicky. Some restaurants think that if they get a Marylebone address, they can act all snooty and uppity. This is a classic case.Would highly NOT recommend that you spend your money here (not inexpensive either). Places like Cinnamon Club, Saffron Summer, Dishoom, Chai Ki and Roti Chai are much better options, IMHO. And the service there is always A+
