Incredible experience!
This was some of the best food I have had in a long time! All the dishes were prepared exceptionally well and the staff offered amazing service. Could not recommend more!

I wasn't exactly sure what to expect coming to Ishizuka, as my partner booked it for me and I was in for the ride. If you go, make sure you look up how to get into the restraunt, as it isnt immediately obvious. Turns out it is a high end japanese degustation, somewhere where you got for a experience, as well as a meal. The dishes were excellent, and the staff great. I would highly recommend giving it a go. The style is a seasonal degustation menu for food lovers, so if thats your thing, check it out.

Had a great time here earlier in the year before the plague. Excited to return now that they're reopening.
Be the first to ReplyVery good and well priced if restaurants in Japan are the benchmark
This review will be short.
I have dined in upper level Japanese restaurants in Japan many times.
This place is an absolute assett for Melbourne.
As is the usual advice , dont go if you are hungry.
The ambience is very Japanese and none of the multitude of staff ever smiled. Please next time folks lighten up.
I may appear to be a whinger but sometimes the fancy presentation over whelmed the food.
The yummy whagyu steak was over cooked-inexcusable.
It appeared that ingredients are all local as compared with Keiko a Nob Hill in San Francisco that imports seafood daily from Tokyo fish market. Therefore fresh exotics were lacking.
I would happily go again.
Be careful with wines. We ordered a bottle of Japanese Grace Chardonnay at about $110 (very fair price)because we were familiar with it. Absolutely outstanding and a sleeper of a wine in Australia. We also had a medium serve of a sake for $65 that was very expensive per ml. Certainly not worth more than the grace but way less volume.
This place needs to be careful that the presentation/environment/ theartics doesnt replace value for money good food.
Try it-you wont be dissapointed.
Hedonistic experience
A place, hard to find (intentional, one suspects), in an underground minimalist japanese setting honed for titillating taste buds of connoisseurs, with seating available to only very limited number of patrons, with appropriate gentle and subtle japanese service. Set menu where food/art pieces are perfectly balanced and of highest quality.
Something to experience - if you can afford it.
Five stars from me.
An evening meal experience
From start to finish this was an experience to savor...the restaurant is nested in a basement and once you enter, you experience a wonderful journey in time to Japan. You follow a set menu and are taken from seafood to wagyu beef and then to amazing desserts. Service is fantastic, everyone is so knowledgeable...the seating allows you to watch all the chefs from any location, feeling intimate and comfortable. Simply brilliant.

Each dish here is finely crafted, expertly assembled, and uses the finest of ingredients, including caviar, scampi, wagyu and toro. Every mouthful was enjoyable and delicate. Heavily seafood focussed, with only one dish containing a small amount of beef. One of us had a minor food intolerance which was accommodated easily, but you could not dine here as a vegetarian/non-fish eater and have the same experience (I don't think).
Of the individual courses the 'Spring Delights' course, which consisted of 8 unique mouthfuls of perfection, was the standout, and would presumably take an individual chef many hours to prepare.
Service was very formal, almost regimented, to the point where some may feel uncomfortable. There was a veritable army of wait staff, at times who seemed to outnumber guests, and each of whom was knowledgable and informative.
The atmosphere is also formal and may not suit all. Seats are taken at the bar, and whilst not crowded together at all, would make it difficult to have a quiet private conversation. There were a few seats at some separate tables, but they were not used on the night I was there and I got the impression they were for before/after dinner drinks rather than dining....the menu almost relies on you sitting right next to the chefs as they freshly prepare each course in front of you.
So why only a four star review? Simply for the value for money aspect. For almost $400 a head (food and matched wines), I expect to leave full. Here, I considered going for 2nd dinner on the walk home (although that's cos I'm greedy, not hungry!). I can understand it to some extent, as the ingredients were expensive and the labour involved in perfectly cooking and presenting them is intense, although perhaps one larger course of lower 'poshness' could be given just to please the big eaters amongst the crowd.
Similarly for almost $400, I expect to leave tipsy, if not drunk. Here, I could have driven home. I would estimate the wine pours at about 50ml per course, perhaps less for the sake. This is less than all other tasting menus I have been to, and given they are charging around $20 per course for 1/14th of wines that cost $50 per bottle (ie $4 worth of wine), doesn't represent value. Mark-ups of 200% are reasonable in fine restaurants, this was 600%. In addition, it irked me a little that wines were poured away from the diners...whilst we were presented with the bottle to view, you miss the theatre of the pour and I got the impression they probably weigh the pours to ensure you are not getting more than they want you to. This might be only my impression, but, as evidenced by the effort put into making the food look so perfect, impressions count for a lot.
Overall, we enjoyed the meal, but would not come again. It is a place to experience high-end Japanese tradition, with the epicurious pompery that comes with it, but not to eat your fill and have a fun night. The former you only need to do once in your life.
Great experience
The food was amazing here, especially the fatty tuna toro. We ordered an extra piece for $15 each which is $$ but considering you can’t get toro anywhere else in Melbourne, it was worth it! If you like sake, the alcohol pairing is worth paying!

Love Izakaya style Japanese restaurant! Big place so you don’t need to wait much. So many great foods to choose from. You must try them!!

Wow, amazing, a real treat to eat here. Watching the dishes being created by the chefs was great. The 11 dishes tasted wonderful although I was not a fan of the Taro dish or the Sea Snail as part of a dish, the rest is a big Wow for me. I enjoyed the Melon cocktail too.

My husband took me here for my birthday and it was amazing. The chef's omakase was outstanding with wonderful sushi, sashimi, hot dishes and fantastic desserts. The service was exceptional and so was the sake selection. The chef's were not super interactive with us which we felt was a slight disappointment, but overall the service and food were outstanding. We highly recommend. And, we like how you access the restaurant - feels a bit 'secret' and fun

First off, love how this two hats restaurant is completely out of sight on Bourke street. This fine establishment really is a hidden gem when you have to go through an apartment building, in the elevator and make your way to the basement floor.
Beautiful and traditional decor with roughly 10-14 seats. Great place for special occasions.
An absolutely wonderful 11-12 course seasonal degustation menu from start to finish. Every dish was very flavoursome and prepared thoroughly.
All the hosts were very professional and courteous, there is nothing about this place I can fault.
We will definitely be back for the next seasonal menu!
