Il Ritorno St. Petersburg Reviews from The Last Year

Great experience, even better food! Found IL Ritorno while watch Beat Bobby Flay and fully understand how Chef Benstock won! His passion and attention to detail was evident with everything we ordered. Not pictured: the mussels - absolutely recommend
Loved my meal here.
I had an early dinner (515 on Saturday) so it was not crowded and service all around was excellent. I started with the Limocello Spritz - which was not too sweet. A very refreshing drink. I had the famous Short Rib Mezzaluna - which was not a huge portion but was rich and filling and a side of the crispy potatoes (they were crispy and delicious). I didn't fill up on the complimentary bread and dipping sauces but took a few enjoyable bites. For dessert the nutella gelato was not over sweet and very satisfying. When I left closer to 7 pm the restaurant was filling up. Street parking only and I was able to park about a block away.
Il Ritorno During our recent visit to St.
Petersburg, we had two dinners at Il Ritorno. Our first dinner was a test of the restaurant and the second dinner was with our large group in their private dining room. The service was prompt and the menu is typically Italian. We had a variety of starters and main courses. Everyone was extremely pleased with all our dishes. I had the octopus as a starter and the angel hair pasta with caviar. Both were amazing. Feedback from all my colleagues was excellent. The restaurant has an extensive wine list with domestic and old-world options. Kat was our server both nights. She was excellent. Overall, highly recommended.
I really wish I had good things to say about this
I really wish I had good things to say about this restaurant, but I don't. I thought the wait staff was just OK, the ambience just OK, the food not even close. I had a gluten-free pasta dish that was okay, but they couldn't add any vegetables/mushrooms or grilled chicken and it was just mediocre. My boyfriend also had a lobster ravioli dish that he said had no flavor. And was more like a broth because they poured broth over it, but it was pasta, so it just became a soupy dish. The prices are high, for this kind of food and service. You would expect more. My wine was very good. Cannot recommend. Also, their website makes it sound like they can accommodate a gluten-free allergy and I guess they think that because they have gluten-free pasta that makes it true, but if they really want to be gluten-free forward, try finding a good bread or popover and add options for grilled chicken, or some kind of vegetable to make a pasta dish seem filling and interesting.

I've wanted to try Il Ritorno for a couple of years now, and I finally got to try it the other night for a date night. I heard of Il Ritorno because I saw the chef had beat Bobby Flay, so I knew the food had to be good. Il Ritorno is quaintly located in Downtown St. Pete. It is simply decorated on the inside with a view of the kitchen. Our server was very attentive and polite. For an appetizer, we tried the 'Frutti Di Mare' which was a raw scallop tartare, rock shrimp, Manila clams, Avocado charred tomatillo, and clam brodetto. It had so much flavor in it. We could've eaten a whole bowl of it. It was perfectly flavorful, light, and refreshing. I highly recommend this appetizer. For my entree I had to try the infamous 'Short Rib Mezzaluna' which is paired with truffle fonduta, concentrated tomatoes, piave, and chives. I can see why the chef beat Bobby Flay with this dish. It was so delicious. The truffle wasn't over powering and paired nicely with the dish. I really enjoyed the tomato sauce. Their pasta is made fresh and it made the dish even more delicious. My fiancΓ© tried their 'Lobster Tortellini' which came with black trumpet mushrooms, sea beans, asparagus, and lobster brodetto. The lobster was perfectly stuffed inside the pasta and was beautifully presented. My fiancΓ© really enjoyed his dish. For dessert, we tried one of their newest desserts it was a guava cake paired with chili, mango, lime sauce. It was so interesting and had a whole world of flavor going on. It's definitely worth trying. It was plenty to share for two people! We really enjoyed our dinner here. If we lived in St. Pete, I'd definitely want to come back again.

Once again, even on a Thursday night we had to book an early dinner just to get a table! The grouper was scrumptious and the WAygu a5? Lots of restaurants SAY they have Waygu A5 but Il Ritorno not only has REAL A5 but they prepare it better than any restaurant I have ever been to other than in my trips to Tokyo. (and this was as close to a Tokyo A5 experience I have ever had in the USA). What will we do when the fancy hotel gets finished across the street? Will we EVER be able to get a table? Hard to believe the ambiance as well. You would not expect the coziness on Central Avenue. The only downside is parking (a common lament in St. Pete), and while the wine list is good (the best on Central Avenue), it could be better. FIVE Stars!
Food is always exceptional and is a great date night spot.
Have been for a larger group event and was great as well.
Steak lovers beware!
I ordered the Wagu Ribeye, medium rareβ¦Expensive to say the least, howeverβ¦ The server comes back and informs me the chef will only cook it to βmedium tempβ and not any lowerβ¦I was like, What?? I donβt like drama, but I was speechless for 3 secondsβ¦ So, to get a steak at medium rare, I had to βpay an extra $7β for a New York Strip. I hesitated but cavedβ¦ BIG mistake! 1st, Ribeye is a better tasting cut due to fat content (IMO) just tastier all around, and then 2nd I βcavedβ to what likely was an upsellβ¦I should have switched altogether. I mean what chef will NOT do medium rare for a requesting customer? Iβve heard chefs wonβt do βwell done tempβ and rightly so. The NY strip was tepid/slightly warm when it arrived, and tough to chewβ¦and $79β¦for a smallish, already sliced steak that was on taste/texture level of a Sam Seltzers steak. Rest of the meal was good and wife loved her meal, however that was my first and last visit as I was very disappointed in my steak!
Amazing food, cocktail menu and service! Gluten free pasta
Amazing food, cocktail menu and service! Gluten free pasta a bonus!! One of my favorites in downtown St. Pete.
Perfection
Itβs restaurant is amazing ! Start to finish itβs the best. Our server Devin was great , attentive and knowledgeable with a great sense of humor. Cocktails to start and a Super Tuscan to go with dinner. Charcuterie board was the best , great cheeses and meats with a spicy pork pΓ’tΓ© that we all Loved. The Oxtail main course is good , I was salivating for days in anticipation!! Zeppole and Affogato for dessert with espresso and Amaretto to finish a perfect meal !! Do your self a favor and go !! Friday and Saturday definitely plan ahead and make a reservation.
We went to Il Ritorno last night.
It is truly one of the best culinary experiences I've had! Every single dish and drink we had were unbelievable and the service was impeccable. I couldn't recommend it any higher!
THE very best service, atmosphere, vibe and food we've had
THE very best service, atmosphere, vibe and food we've had in years. We were in town for the St Petersburg boat show a couple weeks ago for several days. We didn't have a reservation but the fabulous hostess recommended we come and try to get a seat at the bar as they were booked and it was too cold that weekend to sit outdoors. We had a Manhattan while waiting and got a seat at the bar. Wow! The bartender, I think his name was Matthew, was outstanding in every way. The energy in this restaurant feels like you're at a gathering with friends. We ate a lot. Started with the bread of course, octopus, the short rib mezzaluna and so much more. My husband and I spent a couple hours there and had the best time we've had at a restaurant since Covid. I'm telling you, don't miss this gem. Vibe, food, drinks and exceptional staff made for a perfect evening.
An excellent tasting menu thatβs full of flavor
Chef de Cuisine Sheridan Scott helmed the kitchen staff to a perfect finishβa visually pleasing, fresh, and flavorful meal. It was great to watch the chefs not only handle the exacting details of a chefβs table but also the rest of the restaurant and its al la carte menu. Surprisingly I enjoyed the mackerel, but my favorite was by far the truffle risotto (with the uncharged alba truffle shavings). Close seconds were the Dungeness Crab and the unique Hokkaido scallops. Itβs a busy restaurant but the service was always on point and pleasant. The Chefβs table is the way to go for a creative and tasty meal (celebratory or not), in the heart of downtown St Petersburg.
Why no Michelin Star?
Tampa Schmampa. I love Tampa restaurants. But on a sleepy St. Pete street some gnarly dude hols court... his name is David Benstock. He apparently sweeps some magic wand over some exotic potions and creates stuff out of thin air. St. Pete? Yes, but Benstocks St. Pete. il Ritorno is every bit as good as Onyx in Budapest or Edvard in Vienna two of our favorites, both with Michelin stars. Benstock pays attention to flavor for sure. But also texture and temperature and weird exotic taste sensation mixes that dance off the tongue and linger for just the right amount of time. Friendly wait-staff, servers, greeters and bar personnel. (they make their own Lemncello... amazing stuff) This is not thrown together fare. The kitchen is in full view, nothing hidden. No chaos but rather an army of Kitchen culinary connoisseurs, artists actually who quietly work in tandem to make stunning dishes for anyone that is lucky enough to darken the door of this incredible intimate quiet venue. Fish & pork we had. Sounds mundane, until you taste it Benstock style. Indescribable. No words. And terrific wine list.
Great food worth your choice to dine here
It has been a few years since we dined at Il Ritorno on Central ave in St. petersburg. We loved this restaurant then and love this restaurant now, delicious! All food is made in house wonderful bread and pesto and whipped butter brought to the table. Service is excellent, knowledgeable and enjoyable wait staff genuinely want you to enjoy your experience. $25 corkage if you bring your own wine ( max 2 bottles). Drinks from bar are delicious and made well. The only issue I have has nothing to do with the restaurant, downtown st. petersburg has an awful parking problem. homemade foie gras lasagne as fantastic, truffle risotto delicious, short rib ravioli flavorful and not heavy beautifully delicate. Be sure to have a reservation, go early to be sure we have time to hunt for parking. Bar has seats you can dine at, outside seating available. This is a great spot!
A great dinner
We have been to this restaurant quite a few times. The food and service are consistently excellent The staff is highly professional and our dishes were delicious It is upscale and worth the expense
Imaginative and Tasty
This is a great spot to try an innovative take on Italian food. Everything was fresh and delicious and some familiar dishes were presented in imaginative ways. The service was great, the wine was excellent. My only complaint would be that the amount of food we got for the steep price paid was a bit disappointing. But overall, we would go again.
Superb Dining
Four of us had a special dinner here. This small restaurant has a nice atmosphere (lively but not too loud) and fabulous food. Lena did a great job taking care of us as well. You will need reservations and parking is on the street. We started w/ a charcuterie board and ate every piece. Nice selection of meat, cheese, veggies and nuts. Enough for 4. Three of us then had the short rib mezzaluna which be is a specialty. Itβs a light ravioli. One couple split a salad which they also enjoyed. I had the branzino which came w/peas and a beautiful sauce. All wonderful. We added a bottle of Chablis and two desserts (donuts and sorbet). $375 before tip. We would definitely return.
