You'd think a cosmopolitan city like CDMX would have at least one world-class, high-end Chinese restaurant. Well, Hunan is NOT it. Beautiful setting, excellent service, mediocre, expensive food. All the usual menu suspects of overseas Chinese cuisine from different regions. Quality on par or below shopping mall food courts. Food seemed like it had been held under lamps or on steam tables all day. Overly sweet, cloying sauces. So many truly great places to eat in CDMX; so many truly great Chinese restaurants in cities the world over. Shame to pay top dollar for such disappointing food.

Located in the luxurious Las Lomas area of Mexico City, Hunan is a hidden gem that stands out as the city's top Chinese restaurant. With its impeccable hospitality and attention to detail, it quickly became my favorite dining spot in the city. The restaurant spares no effort in delivering an exceptional experience, making it a must-visit for both business trips and social gatherings. From the exquisite cocktails to the explosively flavorful dishes, every aspect of the dining experience at Hunan is crafted with love and precision. Trust me, if you're seeking an elevated Chinese cuisine experience, make a reservation here without hesitation.
Be the first to ReplyWhat hasn't been said about Hunan? Everybody knows that
What hasn't been said about Hunan? Everybody knows that their Peking Duck is the star, so I will write this review based on one cocktail: their Frozen Margarita. Though Hunan is a five star restaurant, their Frozen Margarita is not the best. I mean, it is very good, very institutional. The lemon sorbet is neat, classic, refreshing. The tequila, I don't know which brand they use. The presentation is beautiful. A big martini glass with a light green sorbet, not small. It looks good. The first taste is bitter, the mix between the tequila and the sorbet produces a not so good effect. Maybe it is the lack of salt and Chile . Maybe the Frozen Margarita has to be be bitter because it doesn't has salt. If it's gonna taste like that, I would suggest a tastier sorbet and a better tequila to produce an original degustation. It is more the look and the sorbet than the overall Margarita. I could say that is a generic frozen Margarita. I wonder how their other cocktails taste. Maybe their Whiskey Sour is better? At the end, their Frozen Margarita is very good. It refreshes in the well lighted salon, it entertains with the sorbet while waiting for the food. And helps with the atmosphere, that is not the best. The problem with Hunan's atmosphere is that is too classic. Some fashion, or extravagant people would give it a cool touch. Aldo some original music would help. Hunan needs an ambiance revamp. It falls into familiar, or business men, or senior.
Be the first to ReplyService is great but the food is average Chinese.
They are living in the past. So many better Asian restaurants in Mexico City.

This was a random pick while searching for a place to dine at in Mexico City. Restaurant is in a courtyard with several other nice upscale restaurants in Satellite mall. This restaurant was nicely decorated and was quiet on a Tuesday night. I'm betting it's packed on the weekend. Service was very attentive and exceeded expectations. Menus were available in English which was a plus. Appetizer of rangoons was loaded with meat. I had the spicy chicken noodles which were really tasty. Sauce was sweet and a hint of spice. Noodles had a texture more like an Italian noodle rather than what you expect with a Chinese dish. My colleague ordered a fried rice which looked moist and he almost polished off the entire huge serving. The servings here are large! A palate cleansing frozen lemonade in a shot glass with a fortune cookie was served. Very unusual and excellent. Dessert was a Coco Flan. Packed with coconut flakes and unabashedly sweet. Overall one of the best meals enjoyed in Mexico City.
Be the first to ReplyFirst, the good things.
The interior is beautiful, if not luxurious. The service is impeccable. I felt as though there were 3 or 4 servers serving our table of two people, attending to the details - creating a level of unnecessary formality! But I give them credit for providing excellent service! Now onto the not so good part. The prices are excessive. If you are from the US, the prices are above and beyond the US prices. The two of us spent over $100. I had not expected that. Let me give an example - 3 egg rolls for 325 pesos! That's $16 USD, or over $5 for each egg roll! A small soup was over $10 USD, not to mention how excessively salty it was! We wanted to have the Peking duck. There was no option to order 1/2 a duck as there were just two of us. So we decided to order the whole duck anyway, for about $60 USD! The duck was ok. But the pancakes and the sauce did not meet the standard, and the rice that came with it could have used a bit more cooking time. Overall, it was a highly mixed experience. I felt the most of the cost of the dinner went towards paying for the look of the restaurant and the service, very little would go to justifying the quality and the value of the food. Not recommended.

A cool experience I wish it had fish head which is a stable in Hunan diet especially in high end eating and it was sad they do not carry it or at least an attempted version of it

From the moment we arrived, we new this was not your ordinary restaurant, Chinese or otherwise. Though it was night and we are first time visitors to MX, it looks as if the restaurant is set in the middle of an upscale residential neighborhood and the approach to Hunan looks as if you're arriving at an exclusive country club. It is surrounded by trees and in it's own little sanctuary. This is a difficult place to come without speaking any Spanish and my Spanish is nursery school level at best. There appeared to be no one on staff who spoke English, however, there was enough snobbery going around that I doubt that was true. In any case, the service is excellent (would have been even better if I spoke better Spanish...) and the interior of the restaurant is simple elegant! This is my kind of place; carpeted floor to muffle sound, tables spaced apart either for COVID or just normally, lighting that is subdued but bright enough to read your menu by the fake candlelight and American jazz standards playing softly. I loved it! The place was not full and we did not have a reservation, so we got a table immediately. Even if you had to wait, the bar/lounge is like a comfortable living room with cushy chairs and lots of space - I would have enjoyed the wait. There is a full bar, a large wine selection and the servers make many of the drinks table side with an abundance of flair. The menu was in Spanish but ironically, all of the names of the dishes are in English. We ordered the Moo-Shi appetizer with pork (though the mistakenly brought shrimp) and prepared it tableside. We each had 2 pancaked rolls and it would have been enough for a plentiful entree. The shrimp was moist, succulent and plentiful, the veggies crisp and the sauce sweet and not too heavy. Quite delicious. For entrees we had Hunan eggplant, a dish we frequently have at home and always enjoy. This time the eggplant is cut very thin and still served with a sticky, garlicky sauce with a bit of sweetness and a mild spiciness. It was very good, though I think a bit heavy on the sauce and because the eggplant was cut so thinly, it was difficult to taste it's flavor. We also ordered Shrimp Puff - a dish that had not discernible "puff" with it and again, heavy on the sauce. And finally, though we ordered plain rice, we received fried rice and it was the best I've ever had. Chocked full of the same large and savory shrimp, veggies and lots of moistness with lovely flavor. I neglected to mention that I ordered a Mango Margarita before dinner. It was frozen though surprisingly not super cold, which was nice. Served in a Martini glass with a salt rim, it was delicious. We skipped dessert as we were over full with loads of leftovers and got the bill. This was the most expensive place we've eaten in Mexico and with only 1 drink, 2 main dishes and an appetizer, the bill was over $100. There was a charge on it that I could not understand (I was told it wasn't the tip) and no one was able to help me, so we paid it all. Would I return? Definitely. While I love Mexico, the food becomes tiresome to me very quickly and it was lovely to have an alternative cuisine.

I was visiting Mexico City from California specifically Los Angeles (where this is ample good Chinese food) This was single handedly the best Chinese food I've ever had in my entire life! Must try the braised short ribs and the general chaos chicken. Dumplings were also amazing and so were their house dipping sauces. The cocktails were superb. Above all else the service was IMPECABLE the staff was very assertive, attentive(without being overbearing) efficient thorough, and very kind. HIGHLY RECOMMEND :) *****meant for San Angel location*****
