Overpriced chain food
I had never been to Houston's before but my in-laws love this place for some reason. I don't really get it though. It's so dim in there, and the food is way overpriced for what it is. Our party of four came in on a Sunday at around 1 pm for lunch. I thought it would be empty but surprisingly, the restaurant was pretty full. To start off, we had the spinach & artichoke dip (with salsa, sour cream and warm tortilla chips) and the house-smoked salmon (served with Chef's dressing & toast). The dip was fine, nothing to write home about. I thought it was a little odd it also came with salsa, but I wasn't too mad at it. I ended up putting the dip on the toast that came with the salmon (since I couldn't eat the salmon) and then it was pretty good. I think they should swap out the chips for the toast because that's a much better (and fancier) combo. I inquired about what was in the 'Chef's dressing' and the waitress just said "Oh, it's really good!" When I told her I wanted to double check what the ingredients were, I was met with an attitude-y, "What's the allergy?" So, it would be nice if they listed the ingredients of the dressing on the menu, or if they trained the staff to learn what's in the food. For my main, I went with the Ding's crispy chicken sandwich (buttermilk fried chicken, baby Swiss, spicy slaw). This came with French fries. I wouldn't necessarily order again, but it was a pretty decent sandwich. The chicken was good, but the slaw made it hard to eat, especially with such a soft bun. If you don't eat it quickly enough, the sandwich will fall apart, so this sandwich is definitely not meant to be taken home as leftovers. Hubby had the special, which was filet mignon with frites but I'm not sure if it was worth the $65 price tag. MIL had the ribs, which I thought was way too smoky. But the creamed corn she chose as one of her sides was pretty good. FIL had a burger, which looked pretty basic. I would say that the food is pretty much what you'd expect from a chain restaurant. But you should just double the price of what you'd expect from a chain restaurant too. $21 for a spinach and artichoke dip? Gimme a break.

Houston's is no longer the best since it has secretly initiated a corporate policy which I perceive as discriminatory and prejudicial. It used to be our go-to as a family for celebratory events. At no time did we ever have a problem being seated as 6 (all adults). We were told this weekend that we now can only be seated as parties of 4 or less and they would "try" to seat us near each other. So much for a family dinner. We chose to leave as it appears that many others did too. Houston's used to be bustling on the weekends with long waits to which we were accustomed. There was no one waiting. The bar was near empty. It seemed an anomaly that the restaurant was so quiet. Why no one probably cares, we will not be party to their practice and will no longer give our business to Houston or any other restaurant in the Hillstone brand. So unfortunate.
Be the first to ReplyInclusivity doesn’t exist here
Their 2024 elitist mentality is not okay. They are not inclusive. Excellence of Service & Staff doesn’t exist here anymore.
Be the first to ReplyUnprofessional Management
My friend and I have been going to Houston’s for about 6 years now, especially for birthday dinners. I made reservations almost two weeks prior. The food was good and our waitress very pleasant. However, our dinner was ruined by management! First a manager in a Chefs coat saying we needed to go outside if we needed to take a call, which I found it strange the way he approached us as we were sitting at one of the booths close to the bar and everyone was on their phone. Then as I had just finished paying the bill, a second manager came to us asking how was everything, therefore I made him aware that the waitress was splendid, but I was taken back by the other manager as I thought perhaps we were approached for sending back a drink and it seemed odd because lately people are always on there phone and don’t even follow the dress code as many customers walk in wearing tracksuits and not very well groomed. The manager just said “You have a 90 minute limit and you have exceeded it!” When I said that was very rude and it just discourages us from returning to this establishment” he just said “Do what you want, I don’t care, next time make a reservation!” and walked away. He was extremely unprofessional. I commented this experience to 2 other friends and they said they had a similar experience with the same manager 2 weeks ago. It is such a shame this is the treatment from a place that is over priced and we gladly spend the money, but as of now I will not be returning to this establishment!
Be the first to ReplyDR. Rev. Martin Luther King Dream - Will Never Come True Due to Discrimination at Houston's!!
Dr. Martin Luther King had a Dream, but it is NOT found at Houston's in Hackensack, NJ! People Lie but Numbers and Pictures Don't! This Chef came out of the Kitchen and over to the Lobby area where My Nephew & I were waiting for a Table! In 2023; This Chef REFUSED to serve My Nephew & I (Black People) because I have a REGISTERED 12 pound Tee Cup Trained Cockapoo who remains strapped onto my chest in order to DETECT MY DISABILITY! I am considering SUING HOUSTONS! I asked for the CORPORATE NUMBER; he handed me a note which I still have... with Houston's website! Some kind person VIDEO'd my experience and AIR DROPPED it to Me... Any & All Black People ESPECIALLY the Disabled shoud BOYCOTT HOUSTON's! I will NEVER ENTER their Discriminatory Doors Again‼️ Watch for yourselves‼️

Went with my black family of 5. Was told no seating for 5. White family of 5 came in and was seated.
Be the first to ReplyHorrible treatment and Experience
It was my father-in-laws birthday which turned out horrible because of the treatment we received at Houston's last night. We made a reservation online for 5 people but were told that we only made it for two! So after all 5 of us were seated at a table we were told they could not serve us unless we split up because they only serve 5 ppl every hour. Basically, we were told we had to leave after waiting for 40 min and being starving at 8pm at night. The woman who spoke to us was very rude and when we told her she was not doing the right thing by us as customers she said thanks for the compliment. I can not even believe how badly we were treated. Then the manager basically blamed us saying we were rude to his employee. Are you kidding me? I am beyond angry this was the absolute worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant! They had empty table around but did nothing to help us, The manager had zero customer service skills and should not be a manager.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed Regulars
Houston's is nothing more than a high-priced corporate cafeteria. I made a reservation for four a week ago and my youngest child joined us last minute. We were thrown out of our booth because we had a party of five despite the fact that we were comfortable. We were asked to split up and eat at different tables and if our "dining experience" started they would not reunite us if a larger table was available as our "dining experience" already started. We had dinner at 8:30 on a Monday night and there were many open, available tables. I was with my college children who I am not going to see in a long while and they actually split up my family and made our time miserable and stressful. We are regulars at Houston's, but will not support them any longer as they are too corporate for our liking. Once, I saw the matre de throw out a priest because he was the fifth in a party of four. Also, when you are seated before your butt hits the seat, they request your drink order. They are only interested in small parties, so they can rush you and turn over tables quickly. The food is good, and the wait staff is lovely, but the management and protocol are despicable albeit with very high prices.

Although it's a bit pricey I cannot stop going to this restaurant, every single staff member are extremely nice, they have the best cook the best service and the food is 💯 great. I cannot wait to go back again.
Be the first to ReplyWorst Hospitality and Discrimination
This was absolutely the worst hospitality I have ever accoutered. We had made a reservation 30 days in advance at 5:45pm so that our children could have their last dinner before leaving for camp for seven weeks. It’s been a tradition for a decade with our closest friend at this very establishment. Our friends also made a reservation, theirs at 6:00pm. Upon arrival at the restaurant my wife and our friends wife checked in at with the host. They said if it’s possible can you sit us close together. The host made a rude comment to them and said no. I walked in and was made aware of the hosts comments. We then waited five minutes before the manager comes over and tells us they can’t honor our reservation. It was the most unprofessional, unpleasant experience I have ever accounted at a restaurant in my life. These people have no clue what hospitality is. None. We explained it’s ok, sit our reservations wherever in the restaurant. Didn’t matter. They would not accommodate either of our reservations and threatened to call the police on us. We were blatantly discriminated against. I will never step foot in a Houston’s or Hillstone again and I strongly suggest nobody does. They will be hearing from my lawyers very shortly. They will pay for the humiliation and blatant discrimination in from of my children.
Be the first to ReplyDon’t go here-
Rudest staff in NJ and that is saying a lot! Riverside Grill next door is so much nicer anyway, has a better menu and natural light. Matride was so nasty and said they don’t take parties of six when there are clearly lots of tables for six open.

So EXPENSIVE , Hustons Has Excellent Food, Why So Much Money? The Food Is Consistent With Many Bergen County Restaurants, Not The Price!
Be the first to ReplyBad rude management
I came with my family and had a reservation and manager Todd Martin and Sam K. Threw us out and handled our family in a discracefull manner. I come once a week. You should find a way to make this better. You should not hire managers that can't handle people and solve problems. Tal kollnesher
Be the first to ReplyHoustons has a Race and Transgender Issue
After having been a consistent patron for over 25 years of what once was a very fine establishment, I am sorry to say the restaurant has taken a considerable turn for the worse . I am writing this in August of 2022, wherein there appears to be new management or at least new policies that are clumsily executed in what one can one can only consider to be racist and transphobic in their application. I am a 56 year old African American successful business owner who has dined at nearly all of the 5 star restaurants in Bergen County over the years. As previously stated I have bee a consistent patron of Houston’s for over 20 years. On Friday August 12 around 2:00 PM, my wife and I entered the restaurant and approached the desk to give our names to be seated. Shortly thereafter the hostess informs me that I can not be seated because I am wearing flip flops and that is against policy. I stated that I had been a consistent customer and was unaware of that policy since I had been to the restaurant no less than 5 times over this summer of 2022 and wore the same or similar foot-ware along with dress shorts and a polo shirt. However today 8/12/22 I was told that my foot-ware was prohibited not withstanding my many years of consistent patronage. Then a white male manager stepped forward wearing some form of loafer with no socks - and in a very rude fashion told me I will not be permitted to dine in the restaurant. It is at this moment I saw several white patrons existing the restaurant after their meal in significantly more casual attire - and assorted flip flops. Shortly after another African American male entered the restaurant with a party of 3 and also had on flip flops - he was immediately told that he would need to go find suitable foot ware. At this juncture I expressed my observation to the Hostess and the Manager that the policy seems to only apply to blacks. I then pointed to patrons who just walked passed to exit having finished their meal and said look that individual is wearing what appears to be plastic flip flops - I was than told by a Houstons manager that they are more relaxed with the policy when it comes to women. Immediately I am thinking they must have some form of ESP to be able to determine how people self identify their gender - and besides that is blatantly against the law to discriminate based on sex, gender, race et…. In all good conscience, until there is an over a hall in the management I can no longer dine hear nor encourage anyone who values decency and respect for other to do so either. Lastly no where is posted in the restaurant that there is an official attire policy.

Be the first to ReplyCorporate restaurant
Houstons has "corporate" written all over it. I've never been to a restaurant that had a sign at the reception desk *and* a note on the menu stating that when you're finished with your meal, they may ask you to leave due to people waiting. Laughably inhospitable. I arrived for lunch just before 1 pm on a Sunday. I was the only person in the vestibule at the moment. I mentioned the reservation name and expected to be seated. In most restaurants I know, the guest who arrives after that is shown to the table where their friend is seated. Not here. I was asked to let the hostess know when the other party arrived, so I cooled my heels in the vestibule for five minutes. The food we had was good. I had the $11 traditional salad and was warned it's an appetizer, but it's quite filling enough for a light lunch. My friend had the Thai noodle salad and enjoyed it, although her glass of wine seemed small. We split a key lime pie, which was excellent, although I wish they had a light choice for dessert in addition to the pie, brownie and ice cream sundae. We were hoping not to be rushed out the door since there were empty tables around us. and we were not. Still, I didn't care for the vibe here.
Be the first to ReplyBurnt ribs not expected
I come here for Ribs as I haven't had better ribs than here anywhere But when I received, one of racks were over cooked and burnt and had to return..although we had the best server but even though I returned 2.5 racks I was replaced only by 1 rack...photos would explain That was not expected out of houstons. I am still trying to process what just happened tonight. My best friend and I met up after months of not being able to see each other due to the pandemic. We made lunch reservations at Houston's not thinking ever we would get kicked out.. We ordered a Bottle of wine we had appetizers, then our entre followed by dessert... after getting our bill and paying we stood there Finishing Our Bottle!... a young white guy in a suit walks over says.. how was everyhing...? I answered and said everything was great.. thank you.. he then said VERY RUDELY You need to get up and leave I need this Table!!!! Who Does that!!!! We Will Never Go Back!!! Our server Karen was great and was the only reason I did not take the cash tip back!! Are you kidding me, who rushes out their customers? I did not get the young mans name but his attitude and how he treates customers will not get him anywhere. We Will Not Go Back!!!
Be the first to ReplyFood was good SERVICE WAS TERRIBLE
I went to Houston's with a group of friends to celebrate my birthday and they just ruined my experience. They were rude, condescending and I felt discriminated against. We were still ordering drinks and they just brought us the check. We were in the middle of desert and they were taking our silverware. The "manager" was just obnoxious and didn't seem to know that in the customer service industry you are suppose to treat your customers with respect and the customer is always right. in this case they didn't seem to care. We were there for lunch and spent $400 for 4people and they didn't seem to care. We were not intoxicated, we were not loud and yet they were basically kicking us out . So I will never go there again nor would I ever recommended it. Terrible experience!
Be the first to ReplyBullies
If someone would’ve had told me 25 years ago when I first started to dine at this establishment that I would end up feeling and experiencing firsthand bullying by a kitchen staff I would’ve thought that they are playing a joke on me. 25 years I have been coming to this establishment. Tonight I must say was the last time I shall ever set foot in this place. Todd Martin is a bully and came to our table tonight and bullied three women because we stayed past the 90 minutes allotment. I won’t bore everybody with the mistakes and the unprofessional and poor service we experienced this evening. My family and I came here for 25 years for just about every celebration to include New Year’s Eve and Christmas. Deplorable, despicable, unprofessional, and bully style behavior tonight should not be tolerated. I spent $300 on dinner tonight just to be thrown out by some bully from the kitchen. The staff is rude, the white glove service and the elegance it was brought to Bergen County is gone. No good food should ever be tolerated under these unpleasant and hostile environment. Corporations hire young people who don’t know how to run a restaurant and it seems that the phrase “customer service” no longer exists. Even though the restaurant is half empty they still make you wait half an hour under the pretense that they are so busy and still in such high demand. Open your eyes Houstons half a dozen restaurants popped up feet away from your doors, people may just be wise enough to go and spend there a good hard earned money somewhere else.

The atmosphere is very pleasant here. With decent food and drinks, this place is a must try. I will return.
