Good, authentic Chinese food
We went as three cousins after not seeing each other for years. The wait was 40 minutes - just enough time for a drink around the corner at the Sea Bar. Once we were in, everything was great. Seafood and pork dumplings had a good chew, great flavor, and a mild dipping sauce. Tea Smoked Duck was wonderful with wheat buns, hoisin sauce and green onions. The sauteed Ong-Choy was tasty and crunchy. The spicy chicken with eggplant was the least distinctive dish, but still good. Overall, the food was strong, service was good, but the room is noisy.

After the expectations ... The desillusionment.
Noodles with chicken and shrimp???
Really, 2 shrimps and some little pieces of chicken lost in a tasteless sauce??
What happened with the cook???
And unfortunately not the first time.
But for sure take out.... it's the last time.
A feast!
This is one the best Chinese restaurants I have ever been to. We were a party of four for dinner, everything we tried was excellent, in particular the tea-smoked duck and the ginger scallion prawns. Their wine list is impressive. Service was efficient and cordial, the decor is pleasant and sober. Avoid peek times if you are sensitive to ambient noise.

Great seafood dumplings, tofu, walnut prawns, and spicy lamb. Also try the Austrian white wine.

Very good food, very good service. Peking duck with ultra thin pancakes was outstanding. Very large diverse menu.
Be the first to ReplyA Cut Above Typical Chinese
The food here was wonderful - four and one half stars really. The first hint about how good the food was gong to be was the hot and sour soup. Itโs not my favorite usually, and I think it came with the meal or was an extra, but it was delicious. Much richer and deeper flavor than the standard place - it also had a little kick to it. And none of that weird artificially thickness happening.
Started with the fish and vegetable dumplings. They were fabulous. Mild yet complex flavor and perfect texture. They were gobbled up. I had the combination chow mien. It was so good and a generous portion too. It tasted so fresh with all the different vegetables in it. I got none of the usual corn starch, corn syrup flavor I get from so many average Chinese places. Plus the chicken, beef, and shrimp all were cooked properly and obviously of high quality - moist and soft.
My wife had the spicy eggplant prawns lunch special - she found it terrific and while I didnโt think it was as outstanding as my noodles, I do think it was very good.
Even the tea was a cut above the usual lame weak tea served at your typical Chinese place. Robust and flavorful, we drank the whole pot.
The service was not quite as good as the food although we were there during that weird transition time between lunch and dinner. Atmosphere is not my cup of tea. Too cavernous, music was too loud and trying a tad to hard to be hip. But the food made it all worth it.
Great China is an absolute do over kind of place.
Lunch at Great China: Good food, good buy, always have left over for dinner
My wife and I like this restaurant for lunch ordering the lunch specials for around $11. I especially like Mongolian beef which comes with soup salad, choice of rice, and spring roll. Some dishes with string beans have been over-cooked. We always have enough eft over to take home for dinner which makes this very economical! Service is good. Better to go for a later lunch because it is busy at noon and 1PM.

We got hooked on Great China years ago when it was a crowded little place under the intense supervision of Mike, the owner. It was flawless and the food was wonderful. The new place is big and busy, Mike is gone, but the standard has remained high. However, our recent visit there left us wondering. The fish and vegetable dumplings were dull and doughy, and the lettuce cups with chicken were a mess- the lettuce pieces were torn so roughly that making cups was nearly impossible, and the filling was coarse. Happily, the rest of the meal was up to their usual standard. We'll try again soon.
Be the first to ReplyA bit overrated
Great China is really popular but the food is pricey and so-so. They're billed as Northern Chinese but the food is kind of Americanized. They have a really good wine selection though, and the ambience and service are good. I recommend the Peking roast duck (not super authentic but the taste is good) and double skin.
Be the first to ReplyStill good food
I haven't been in several years since the move into the new building. I preferred the old one, which was quieter and more cozy, but this one is definitely in keeping with the times, down to the glittering arrays of expensive Japanese whiskey behind the bar. Anyway, the food was as good as ever. The tea-smoked duck was tender and flavorful. The beef and broccoli was fine, with tender beef and broccoli that wasn't overcooked. The pork dumplings were good, and the sauce that came with them was perfect. The service was friendly but a bit slow, as the restaurant was (as usual) packed.

Did not like this place. Canโt believe it has good reviews. Lunch was very greasy and not tasty. Service was sooo slow and left finished dishes for 15 minutes on table. Not recommended.
