The WORST! Do NOT eat here
DINING: COLD, TASTELESS food, ALL of it: Wood-fired Beef Tenderloin, Duck Confit Potato Rosti, Crispy Sunchokes, everything. Our Tenderloin (ordered medium) was VERY rare. The REFIRE took LONGER than the original order to get, and by that time my wife was so hungry, she just ate it. She lost half her Sunchokes when it was taken away for the refire. Had to ask for water: it was served lukewarm. Had to call the server back again to ask for ice. Was glared at when I asked for salt (all the food was absolutely flavorless). ATMOSPHERE: Dirty, unwashed floor; Drapes, floor to ceiling, coverfing unfinished walls (possibly mid-construction?); Irregular, painted shutters over the middle of the ceiling; etc.. We were seated at a "cozy" table (were told this THREE times by the maitre d') - it was squeezed in, next to the cold windows (32 deg outside). Servers changed utensils after every "dish" served ("small plate", soup, entree, etc), but FAILED to check if the food served was fine, or if we wanted more water (we had to ask for more), etc. No real service except for the change of utensils. SUMMARY: Upon leaving, the manager asked us if our experience was good. I told him I always tip, but it was only 10% due to all the above. He acted surprised and said: "Well you should've told me!" He PERSONALLY delivered the under-done, refired tenderloin. For a customer to teach a manager the basics of running a restaurant: hire competant chefs; train your servers; clean and wash your floors; etc. is simply unreal. This was for my wife's birthday, $250.00 wasted when I wanted to treat her to an "upscale" dinner. To say I'm angry about this "dining experience" is an understament. A "4.5 to 4.6 star rating"? DEFINITELY not! If I could give it a zero, I would.

Exceptional food and service. I try to go whenever I am in Sacramento and Ella does not disappoint. Small, elegant attention to service details alone would merit a visit, but the food itself is equally worthwhile. So much is good, but the lobster appetizer and fried chicken are standouts.
Be the first to ReplyTerribly disappointing based on local, longstanding recommendations
We have been wanting to dine in Ella for ages because of the high recommendations from folks in Sacramento. Unfortunately, we were terribly disappointed and I cannot recommend this restaurant. The biggest offending element was the service. Don't get me wrong all the staff were perfectly pleasant, but it deeply lacked the elevation you'd expect at a restaurant of this caliber. We were not greeted on entry, and had to stand in the entrance for longer than was comfortable to be helped. They quickly bussed and sat us at a soaking wet table. No one checked back in on us until we were halfway done eating, which was unfortunate, because we desperately needed some salt. Then when we were done, rather than clearing the table, they left heaps of dirty dishes on the table and brought us the bill. After they scanned the card, they literally lifted a plate with ketchup on it to slide the bill under and we had no table space available to tip and sign the receipt. As we were leaving, we could hear the wait staff talking about how much a table had tipped -- which just felt tasteless. The decor is cheap and not as elegant as I would expect from a restaurant recommended for fine dining. Lightweight chairs that would fit best in a lackluster hotel cafe, shabby shutters lining the walls and ceilings, cluttery aesthetic with glasses and flatware dotted around and exposed messy server stations. The food was not terrible, but also not anything that we would recommend. We had the lobster corndogs, shrimp & lobster roll, and the fried half chicken -- which was unevenly cooked with areas of burnt breading and areas that were too pale. We were ready to love this place and have always heard great things, but it was not an enjoyable experience.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful dinner for two
We arrived for an early dinner. As the restaurant was not yet in the evening rush we got our server to ourselves for a bit. Brian was the best! The food here is incredible, as one would expect. We had an amazing corn soup that was like the taste of summer in a bowl. The rolls and carrots were also stellar. Our server, however, was the true standout of the evening. He made the experience magical with top notch service and stories of the history of the dishes.

Had an amazing meal at this very special fine dining establishment. It is rare that I will rate anything 5 Stars. However, this restaurant fully deserved robust applause. We were three diners. Every dish we ordered was superb. These included: Brioche Bread, corn chowder, stone salad, fried chicken, homemade pasta with tomatoes, cold lobster, ice cream Sunday. All absolutely a pleasure on the palate. To top it off, the service was extraordinary! I encourage you to treat yourself to this very special experience!
Be the first to ReplyNice dinning experience in downtown Sacramento CA
Nice dinner and drink menu. Great service. Nice location walkable from the two large hotels Sheraton grand and Hyatt. King salmon was done perfectly. The beef Wellington was very good as well. The pork was a bit over done. Will visit agai to try other dishes.
Be the first to ReplyBirthday dinner was a disappointment.
The service was terrible. Waiter was unpleasant, shoved us in the back corner next to a very large group celebration. It was loud and could not hear my husband talk who was seated in front of me. The tenderloin was ok and I had the chicken which was fried, tasty but not very impressive. The waiter saw that I had a birthday coupon that was a gift from my staff and he gave no acknowledgment of my birthday so I decided to go elsewhere to continue my birthday celebration. The only thing that was good were the oysters we had at the bar along with meeting a very nice couple we met at the bar.
Be the first to ReplyGood food but not a great value
We arrived about 7 minutes early for a 5 pm reservation and they made us wait to seat until 5 pm. That's just stupid, given what I'm getting ready to pay for dinner. They were doing a very robust happy hour business at that time. Once seated things improved. Service was friendly and they recognized my birthday, which I put in the reservation. They have an impressive bourbon collection but of course over priced. We ordered scotch egg, salmon, halibut, and grilled asparagus. All were good, but way over priced for the portion size. Best of what we ordered was the halibut - highly recommend. Cool to try the scotch egg but it was not even close to worth $28. They did bring us a free scoop of bourbon ice cream at the end to recognize by birthday - a nice touch. I do recommend it as a unique experience. I personally have no plans to return.

This is my 3rd time to Ella on business. It is a vibrant and excellent restaurant- for friends or business dinners. Staff is accommodating and excellent. Food delicious!
Be the first to ReplySuperb Food and Service
Just had an amazing meal at this place which must be the best restaurant in Sacramento. Everything from the bread and butter to the carrot cake for dessert (accompanied by the best sorbet I have ever tasted) was perfect. Best of all, the service was impeccable which these days is hit and miss regardless of price point due to staffing issues. One of the best meals I have had in recent memory, this place would do well in any major city. Well worth the price given the quality of the overall experience.
Be the first to ReplyMother's Day visit
Nice downtown Sac restaurant, valet parking was great. The atmosphere was more casual than expected, you can dress up or go casual. My entree was the filet, it was cooked perfectly, we had the artichokes with lardons which were scrumptious. Others tried the lobster and pasta. But by far my favorite was the hazelnut chocolate mousse item. Also has a great cocktail menu. Service was excellent.
Be the first to ReplyThe Selland's brand is lacking in every way
After having our reservations cancelled by The Kitchen because of staffing issues and then being told we would have to get in the back of another 4 month long waiting list (terrible customer service), we stayed with the brand and made reservations that night at Ella. We looked at the website and made our reservation early to take advantage of happy hour. When we got there, the place was a ghost town so we decided to take seats at the bar which was essentially empty. We asked the disinterested bartender for a happy hour menu to which he replied "we're not doing that". We told him that we saw it on line and he said "we decided not to do it tonight". Rude, grumpy, unapologetic and inattentive come to mind in describing his demeanor. We moved to a table, ordered beverages and a meal and along the way, were told that "they are hanging on by a thread". So, we got fired from the Kitchen, told that what they say on line doesn't really happen at the restaurant and were also told that they are barely making it. That cost us $200 and for that we learned that the brand is broken. Two terrible experiences in one day, being exposed to unapologetic people, eating overpriced mediocre food is too much for anyone, regardless of what is going on with them. This brand does not deserve your money until it can demonstrate the consistent quality that it was once known for. Until then, Sac has to many options to put up with lackluster food, atmosphere, treatment and disregard.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent vegan dining
We had one of our best, eve,r vegan entrees, at Ella's. There is nothing vegan listed, on the menu. I phoned and was told that the chef would prepare an off menu, dinner, just for us, using what he had on hand. They were not kidding. It was fantastic! We can not wait, to return. In addition, to top notch food, the service, and atmosphere, were just perfect. We loved the whole experience, and our expectations, were more than exceeded. Thank you, Ella's!

Been there twice in one week. Love the place, great ambiance, nice drinks, good quality food. Suitable for vegetarian.
Be the first to ReplyGirl, yes! Impeccable Sacramento.
Impeccable food and service. The mesquite bbq dusted octopus was so unique, and the selection of oysters with homemade hot sauce was spectacular. The service was very knowledgeable and attentive. Would definitely come back for a special occasion.

Ella is back and possibly better than before. As always, the service has remained excellent. The bar is exquisite, making one's drink the way you like it or any of a number of other ways. The wine list is quite good with a wide and interesting seleciton of wines by the glass as well. The dining room is not quiet but it is subdued, high ceillings and the innumerable old window shutter wall coverings mute the sound. Food presentation on plates is carefully done and the food worth the candle. The BLT was thick, deep in bacon and seasonal 'maters, dripping in goodness while the fried chicken was elegant. Now, this might sound like food from a drive-in but no, it is to drive-in food what jet planes are to balloons. Comfort food done superbly. I couldn't handle the octopus as well but definitely try it, it has always been tops. We were there for a slow lunch, talking through ongoing work, and the service was much as you would find it at a good restaurant in France for lunch, a respect for time spent over the meal and the discussion that goes with it. As a sidelight, I have to recommend in closing their caramel and caramel corn donuts. Truly, just try them. Over the top, almost like country fair food fun.

Be the first to ReplyHappy hour!
The craft cocktails and happy hour menu were delicious! Still a little pricey, but the restaurant is high end, so that was expected. We had a very nice time. Great service.
Be the first to ReplyThank You Ella
At the end of a rather chaotic Dine Downtown 2020, we turned to our tried and true, Ella, for one last menu. Our server, Brian, settled us right in with the creative spin on this year's event and all the courses were delicious! The
new flavors and combinations were fun to try and left us full and happy. Thank you for always delivering top notch food with extraordinary customer service. If you haven't been, GO, and if you have - you'll be happy to know they are still kicking foodie @ss!
Exquisite details, great service
To my tastes, Ella mixes beautiful cocktails, creates divine sauces, and combines adventuresome but complementary flavors. Their service is professional, not rushed, not slow, and able to accommodate pre-show dining. (Some dishes and drinks are overpriced for their ingredients and execution difficulty however, so it is worth watching the prices.) One of my favorite fine dining options in Sacramento! Enjoy!

I tried calling The Kitchen to book a table, and they suggested I try their sister restaurant Ella, supposedly owned by the same family. So I ended up going here for a late lunch, and very nearly decided to go elsewhere when I saw that there was only a limited happy hour menu on offer. I'm really glad I stayed though, because the meal ended up being excellent (and the peanut butter crunch bar I had for dessert was one of the best desserts I've had in a while) It was also extremely good value for money considering the quality of the food. The vibe is great as well and the wait staff are friendly - very highly recommended.
