Good concept but needs improvements on food and service
I really wanted to praise this restaurant as I love omakase meals and the price is relatively reasonable. However the whole evening was quite strange, the food was too sweet and lacks finesse and the dashi (soup base) was bland. It was fine to look at but the taste is not right. Furthermore, I was asked to make full payment after we were seated and before dinner was served which is something I have never experienced before.

Overpriced food, terrible service, inflexible rules if one person in your party is late, unreasonable cancellation policy requires 2 days notice, extremely high cancellation fee of $100. What is there to like??
Be the first to ReplyHigh quality omakase at its finest.
Each of the eight courses were beautifully presented, and timed just right so you were never waiting too long, but had enough time to have a conversation. The quality of the fish was excellent, and even the simple dishes like the palette cleanser yuzu juice was superb.
There was a mix of classics like fresh nigiri, but also some interesting dishes like the cabbage roll which came in a creamy miso sauce. The photos do more justice than these words.
The part that was missing that would have made it five star is that the bar was much lower than the chef station, and it was hard to actually see what the sushi chef was making, which in my opinion is half the fun of sitting at the bar at an omakase. Similarly, it would have been nice if the chef spoke conversed with us during the dinner, either explaining the dishes or what she was doing, or even just talked about being a sushi chef, which I also think is part of the fun of sitting at an Omakase bar.
Overall, nice Omakase experience with good food. You won't leave here with a full stomach, but the food is good.
Exquisite
I was looking forward to this dinner and Delage did not disappoint. Everything was delicious- from the amuse bouche to desert. The pacing of the multiple courses was perfectly timed - two hours of wonderful taste treats passed in no time. Service was relaxed yet competent. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates high quality Japanese cuisine.
Be the first to ReplyLocal Gem
I knew nothing about this local gem until a friend told me about it. A fabulous 8-course tasting menu for a very reasonable $65! The courses are mostly "chef's choice," but diners are asked at the beginning if they have any food allergies/preferences/prohibitions. The courses are primarily sushi. The fish is very fresh and tasty. There is a variety of sakes (and wine choices) to go with the meal. The experience takes about 2 hours. Delage is worth seeking out.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Food, Some Issues
I would rate Delage 5+ for the food, which is exquisite. But our evening there was marred by a few other issues, 1. There was some snafu with the reservation, which I would chalk up to a problem on our end but for the fact that I noticed several other diners encountering the same can't-find-your-rez problem. 2. We were seated for 20 minutes before the server came by. 3. The surface of the sushi bar was sticky. After the waitress wiped it off, it was...still sticky. 4. The place is hot and stuffy.
These are first-world problems to be sure. But when shelling out $65 a person exclusive of drinks, tax and tip - I want a better experience.
Worth a visit Omakase (prix fix)
Sometimes a small, mid priced restaurant gives me more than I expect. Delage is just such a place. It not pretentious, fairly small, well serviced and designed with a magnificent sound system (joke...small radios at table side). The omakase menu removes the need to choose and requires a level of trust that was well deserved. Surprised by some of the sushi(sea bream) that is not typically found at mid priced omakase restaurants. Well paced servings for a two hour pleasurable dinner. Spectacular draft pilsner beer. Thanks
Be the first to ReplyA wonderful, delicious evening with friends
Delage is such a gem in the Oakland food scene. A real must for anyone who loves raw, delicious fish, beautiful, creative presentations and excellent service!!! My husband and a few friends helped celebrate my birthday there and it was such a wonderful night. Service is excellent! The sake selection was great and the meal was amazing! It is a omakase type menu so you are allowing the chef to choose for you...so you are in excellent hands. A real adventure in Japanese food. At $65, it was unbelievable that it didn't costs more. You definitely get your money's worth and more! I must include a note that it is not all raw fish, the duck and the chawanmushi were sublime, so delicious and tender! Kabocha Salad and the Kaki Pudding were really delicious too! The rest of the meal was raw fish but really top quality, fresh, delicious fish.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious and excellent service
My husband chose Delage for his birthday dinner. I avoid price fixe meals with many courses but it was his birthday. I admit I enjoyed the meal. The courses were delicious. It changes often but tonight we enjoyed a Kabocha Salad, followed by chef's choice sashimi with Ponzu. 3rd course was 4 pieces of sushi, 4th was Ikasumi Shiokoji Hummus-pomegranate sals, nori ikasumi chips. 5th was Seared Liberty Duck-balsamic soy, carrot puree, sprouted beans. 6th-Chef's selection, 4 pieces of sushi, 7th- White Miso soup-egg noodle strands, shimeji, shungiku, scallions. 8th- Green tea custard with fresh cream & seasonal fruit.
Presentation of all courses was beautiful and a real treat. The service was impeccable. If you enjoy Japanese cuisine and want a top notch experience this is the place. My husband's expectations and mine were exceeded.
NOTE: The seating area is about 20 people so go to their website and make a reservation at least a week ahead.
Artful Omakase
I love the casual B-Dama counter (also in Swan Market), so was excited to finally try their intimate, upscale omakase restaurant Delage.
Delage is a really special place, with very high quality, fresh ingredients, inventively prepared and beautifully plated. At 8 courses for $65, it's also a great value for a "high-end" dining experience... though of course when you start pairing wines or sakes, and adding optional dishes to your chef's choice tasting it can start to add up.
Great Omikase Adventure
Had the opportunity to try this place out a few months back. Where can you find a wonderful, creative 8-course omikase for $65? This restaurant is owned by the same people that do AS B-Dama in Swanโs Market which is right next door. I think this is a hidden gem. Will definitely go there again.
