Cranes Washington Reviews from The Last Year
Terrible service - it's unfortunately no surprise this
Terrible service - it's unfortunately no surprise this place lost their Michelin star. I was very impressed when I went years ago and very disappointed on my recent visit. The server seemed incredibly stressed and was unable to get anyone's food or drink orders going. We sat patiently at the bar for 30 mins before we were even given waters. By the time he came around, we weren't able to ask questions which was unfortunate since both my friend and I have food allergies and online it said the restaurant was able To accommodate them. He did not have a chance to recommend or describe dishes, we just felt like a total inconvenience and bad for coming. We put an initial order in and the food didn't come for 45 mins before the first course. No one checked on us and asked if we wanted a second drink. When we tried to get attention, it felt like the service was avoiding us and apologizing to others nearby. Multiple dishes were missed. My friend really enjoyed the house red blend wine on the happy hour menu (it's from Italy.) but neither of us was impressed by the food. Would not come back again unless they can really fix whatever issues they are experiencing.
Creative cuisine
The menu is very creative with so many unique options that deciding what to have for dinner was difficult. While the pork ribs and the gaia iichiko were delicious, the best part of the meal was a seasonal dessert which consisted of a shiso sponge, rubarb foam with lychee granite and lemon lattice. It looked beautiful and the combination of flavors and textures made for an exquisite finish to the meal! Nishan provided fantastic service and I look forward to returning on my next trip to D.C.
Savored each morsel
Chef Pepe Moncayo was reluctant to confirm he was the chef until we assured home we *loved* his food at Cranes. His interpretation of Spanish Kaiseki is so delicious that I chewed every bite slowly so I could savor each and every morsel. Lunch was very reasonable, especially the bento box. My cousin's seafood ramen made our eyes roll to the back of our heads. Even the cappuccino was on point. Our server, Nishan, saw us eyeing the cherry blossom dessert (soon to be discontinued next week) and convinced us to try it. It was shiso sponge, rhubarb foam, and lychee granite. No wonder they won Michelin awards in 2021 and 2022. I love the combination of a masterful intersection between two wonderful cuisines, quiet elegance of their space and warm service.

First time at Cranes.
Went to celebrate an anniversary and was surprised by how informal the whole experience was for a high end restaurant. The bar felt like we were in the wrong place, filled with tourists wearing sweats and even a few in hockey jerseys (it was a game day.) Bartender was anti social and seemed unhappy to be there. So we got a table. We were seated a few tables away from the open kitchen which was odd as we were celebrating a special occasion and the only people dressed formally in the entire restaurant (again, lots of jeans, t-shirts and sweats in the dining room.) The did place a happy anniversary card on our table, but no little treats, snacks or desserts were sent to make it feel special fwiw. Our server was lovely and knew the menu well. We ordered a la carte and enjoyed the iberico, tempura shrimp and chicken sando, followed by the pork shank which was quite good. Maybe expectations were too high. Felt more like a good neighborhood restaurant than one vying to get a Michelin star back.
As a fan of fusion food, I absolutely have to recommend
As a fan of fusion food, I absolutely have to recommend this place. I expected the patatas bravas to be similar to dishes I've tried at other tapas restaurants but was pleasantly surprised by the presentation & taste! It's got one side of spicy mayo sauce and one side of creamy mayo sauce, which delivers the perfect taste in one bite. The cheese on top of the shishito peppers was also a wonderful pairing. The waiter was very friendly and the interior was well decorated. Five stars for everything!!
Quite disappointed.
I was really excited to try out this spot, because I've seen consistent reviews online about it being one of the best fine dining establishments in DC. When we got there, the restaurant was basically empty, which really surprised me; I'm used to nicer restaurants being very hard to book and always packed. We got seated near the open air kitchen, and immediately some signs were off. The silverware and water cups were not reflective of a fine dining restaurant, and had clear signs of dilapidation. The service was slow, and the timing between dishes was a bit too long, to the point where we were hungry during the meal. We got the set course. It started out well, and the first few dishes were interesting with unique flavors (there was a good scallop dish!). However, once we hit the mains, it honestly was quite mediocre. Plain flavors with no depth or uniqueness. The dessert was even more disappointing; it was basically a huge blob of dense chocolate mousse, with no complexity to it. Definitely don't go for the set menu; not sure how the a la carte compares!
Cranes was very good and very expensive.
The service was excellent. Lunch menu had a lot of words that I didn't know. I'm a foodie and have a pretty good vocabulary, but I still had to ask, The waiter was very nice in explaining them. I might go for dinner to see how different that menu is. He said lunch was more Japanese and dinner was more Spanish.

I went with a friend last month for happy hour (at Bar Tsuru) and it was amazing! The food was amazing, and definitely felt like they put some care in the Spanish / Japanese fusion & the combination worked really well. Also, our bartender Matt was fantastic and made us felt more than welcome, and also gave us some good suggestions on drinks / tapas!
Save for your next Solo Date And why? Because.
.. @cranesdc has Happy Hour, Every. Single. Day. 4pm to 8 pm Four Hours of Happiness! Is it also beautiful inside? Yes! Matt, David, & Elliott at the bar were phenomenal! Quite honestly, the entire staff was amazing! Ok, so what did I get... For cocktails... $10-$13 if on HH The Old Pond- a clarified punch drink! Anytime I see a clarified punch drink in gonna get it! Better try it! Gaia iichiko- slightly sweet with bubbles The Final Ward- whiskey based and freaking delicious! For food... OYSTERS super unique, and for only $2 during hh, I ordered a half dozen. The single Scallop Thee Stuffed Dorade- everything I needed Seafood Ramen Adding this spot to my Happy Hour Rotation for sure!
Love all the food and wines we have here.
The food at Cranes not only focuses on flavor but also texture! Not a surprise they had a Michellin star a few years ago. My favorite was the udon! The croquettes and their spin on okonomiyaki were a breath of fresh air. My husband really loved the fish tacos (which I can't remember the name of it in the menu). The wine selection was also fantastic! I also had the wagyu old fashion--very innovative, but not my kind of old fashioned. They have great happy hour from 4-7pm at the bar--which is nice and more elevated than other restaurants that serve happy hour. Great music. Our server Daniel was attentive. I'd definitely come back for the udon and would love to try other dishes.
I've been here twice for the happy hour, and it's been
I've been here twice for the happy hour, and it's been great both times! The staff behind the bar are friendly and have given me great recommendations from the menu. For savory dishes, I've now tried the pork fried rice (4/5, super interesting combination of textures and flavors, even if not all were my favorite), udon (4/5, great noodles and toppings but sauce a bit more watery than I wanted, so it didn't stick to the noodles), chicken karaage (3/5, standard fried chicken with great aioli but not quite as crispy as you might expect), okonomiyaki tots (3/5, just your standard potato with some sauce really), and paella croquetas (5/5, absolutely delicious balls of chorizo and delight). The desserts are where they really shine, though. The chocolate de cabra has a wonderful caramel with chocolate mousse and goat ice cream, and the crispy rice is a great contrast to the softness of everything else. The yuzu cheesecake and sorbet were 5/5, and there were even little tapioca balls in the punchy citrus sauce at the bottom of the plate, which I could have happily drunk on its own. The churros were good (I prefer them without so much sugar on the outside, but they were fried very well!), but the real star was the miso caramel dipping sauce (5/5)! I want that sauce all day, every day. The chocolate one was more watery, but that caramel is the real deal. I included some pictures to show how gorgeous the plating is - every dish was presented beautifully! I loved the food here and will definitely be back again - hopefully for the paella next time to say I've tried the main menu! Definitely recommended for unique Spanish/Japanese fusion, very reasonable happy hour prices ($8-10 for dishes), and stellar desserts. The decor inside is beautiful, too! I loved the subtle crane decorations throughout.
What an interesting idea for a restaurant: Japanese and
What an interesting idea for a restaurant: Japanese and Spanish fusion. At Cranes, Spanish tapas (small plates) and Japanese kaiseki (a multi-course meal), go hand in hand. Gluten free foodies can find quite a few options to enjoy from their designated gluten free menu. It's only slightly different from the regular menu. We ordered the shishito peppers, the patatas bravas, the bok choy, salmon crudo, and the wagyu short rib aburi. Everything was delicious. The standouts were definitely the salmon crudo and the patatas bravas. The crudo features a rotating selection of fresh fish and on this night, it happened to be salmon - one of my faves. The patatas bravas were some of the fanciest and most inventive I've seen. The sauce was super flavorful! The prices are typical for DC and the wine list was solid enough. I wish I could've stayed for entrees but unfortunately, I didn't have enough time before my train back to Baltimore. I'd definitely return to check out more of Cranes' menu though!

Visit: 5/2021 Review finished: 3/2024 Unfortunately I am attempting to finish this review in 2024, long after visiting this establishment so I do not recall my visit here in detail besides giving it 5/5 stars and the fact that I could never have afforded to come here on my own. There weren't many patrons dining in at the time. I remember the chef coming to our table at one time to chat with us. The experience was unique to me at the time, with small dishes brought to us from a pre made menu (I think maybe it was like a chef's choice menu?). I know I enjoyed everything I had. Looking back, this might remind me a bit like the movie "the menu" lol Anyway, in my very trusted book of ratings, I absolutely enjoyed this spot and the food was amazing. So I'll be back and do a better job reviewing next time.
Lovely space and great service.
Every single course was spectacular. The omakase came with three desserts!
// Summary A bold and innovative experience that blends
// Summary A bold and innovative experience that blends Spanish and Japanese flavors that keeps you guessing in anticipation as to what's coming next. // Experience I came here for the dinner omakase along with its beverage pairing. The creativity of these dishes with the combination of flavors and the presentation did not cease to amaze me. The pairings worked quite well to complement each course. // Service Service was excellent. Each dish and its associated pairing were described in a way that captivated my attention, expressed with my passion from the staff. Chef Pepe actually came out to greet me, thinking that I was part of the restaurant industry (very flattering, hah). We chatted for a little bit and shared a couple of jokes. // Ambiance The restaurant itself is quite large and has dark modern earthy tones to it. It's very tasteful and you feel comfortable without it necessarily feeling unapproachably upscale. // Convenience I'm not entirely familiar with the DC landscape, so not sure how "convenient" this location is - especially since I often choose to stay at a place that is central to most of the restaurants I want to go to.
Nice restaurant week dinner
Came here for restaurant week. $65 set menu with 3 appetizers, 2 mains and dessert. Kabocha hummus was super good - interesting mix of flavors. Ramen with lobster broth and shrimp was fine but noodles a bit too soft. Best was the fried rice with iberico pork. So flavorful and packed a bit of a spice punch. Desert was a type of chocolate mouse with salted goats milk ice cream, caramel and crunchy rice puffs. Very tasty. Service was a bit too fast but polite and professional.
Espectacular and good prices
The best restauran in D.C. , we went in dec 31 for new year dinner. My family and friends enjoy delicius fusion flavors from Spain and orient.
Wow, wow, wow!
My husband and I had a great experience at Cranes. We both had the tasting menu with wine pairing. The food was delicious and the pairings were really good. We were pleasantly surprised by the Turkish rose and the sake was the best we have ever had. We thought the price 118+65 was very reasonable especially for what we got. Service was excellent! It’s pretty impressive that a restaurant of this size is able to turn out consistently good food and run such a smooth operation. We would go back.
A night to remember!
This was a unique experience for all the senses! We were celebrating my milestone birthday. The combinations of tastes and structures was amazing.
Amazing dinner - splurge and get the omakase!
Had a fantastic dinner at Cranes Spanish Kaiseki, that will rank among the best overall meal experiences I've had. We were hesitant to try the omakase menu for fear of it being too much food, but the server suggested, correctly, that it was very well balanced and that if had gone a la carte we would likely order too much and spend near as much. Nearly every course was amazing, with inventive combinations of ingredients and presentation drawing on Japanese, Spanish and other influences. Suggested saki and wine pairings were perfect. Service was very, very good. While this was fine dining in food quality, service and pricing, the room has a modern, open vibe, that made for an un-stuffy experience. Highly recommend for a special occasion dinner in DC.
First star experience in the USA
We have often eaten with 1-3 Michelin stars in Europe. This was our first in the USA. What is different? Firstly, the size. It is difficult to provide so many places with high quality. The atmosphere is casual, but you probably won't find guests in shorts and T-shirts in a Michelin-starred restaurant anywhere else. The fact that you are served the courses by different waiters is also different. Did that bother me? No, it depends on the food. We sat with a view of the kitchen, which was quiet and professional. At the beginning you could also see the chef. The food was very good, we tried omakase. At the beginning the dishes came a little too quickly, once the waiter wanted to clear away before my wife had finished, which is not acceptable. Afterwards the distance was OK. We chose the wine pairing. Sake and I are not friends, unfortunately not my taste. Minuti and St. Emilion were very good, the Portuguese white wine was not my favorite. The sommelier was very nice, as was our waiter. Overall a very good culinary experience. I would have liked to have had a little more time to eat, but hey, that’s USA.
Churros to die for!
Superb service of exquisite, simple food. Great sake menu. We really enjoyed our visit and our five year old was very pleased with the dishes. We enjoyed the bok choy, the eggplant, the scallops and the Dorad special. Luscious cocktails and fantastic Junmai Daiginjo, lightly chilled. To top it off we had the churros with a combination of warm, chocolate, and warm caramel, that was out this world delicious. A scoop of caramel at the end!
Deserving of a star
Had some misses but overall a fantastic innovative and tasty menu - wine list is on the skimpy side and they did have some service glitches - but overall a great meal
Anniversary celebration!
My spouse and I celebrated our 20th anniversary with their signature 10 course omakase menu with wine pairings at lunch. It was a wonderful experience. We were pleased with each dish as they presented with unexpected deliciousness. My favorite was the raman noodles with scallop and my spouse loved the hake! The waiter was fantastic and we even spoke with Chef Moncayo!! It was super cool. The desserts were amazing as well. Definitely recommend the wine pairing as they are essential for the full experience. The only negative thing was the taste of the tap water. Ordered bottle water!
Amazing experience if you have the $$$
Went on my own and chose a table seat so I could enjoy the Omakase. Also went with the wine pairing. It was a wonderful experience. Would do again when I save up the $$$. Service was excellent. Sometimes a little hard to hear but nothing a “sorry, can you repeat that” doesn’t solve.
