"The Waiting is the Hardest Part"
Comet Ping Pong has a unique and lively atmosphere. Base thrums loudly in the background as projectors splash videos of ping pong champions onto the concrete walls. The back room even features several open ping pong tables, allowing guests to try their hand at the niche sport after they eat.
But if you make the trip to Comet Ping Pong, which is always flooded with diners and does not take reservations on weekends, be prepared to wait a while. A LONG while.
My party and I killed an hour and a half in a nearby bookstore waiting for a table, and after we ordered our pizzas, waited a full 75 minutes more before they were brought to us.
A full three hours after my party had arrived at Connecticut ave, the waitress astutely acknowledged that "everything is super slow right now," and finally brought us the food.
As for the pizza itself, I recommend the "Yalie," a take on New Haven-style thin crust with clams, onions, and garlic on top. It was delicious! I had no complaints about cuisine itself--only how long it took to arrive.
The personal pizza size is a perfect serving for one. My crust was satisfying and crisp, and the olive oil drizzle on top added another great depth of flavor.
Bottom line: if you're looking for great pizza in the Tenleytown/Chevy Chase area, I could easily recommend other spots such as Angelico's which offer food just as good without the long wait. But if you want to spend the whole evening waiting for pizza and playing ping pong with your friends, Comet is the spot for you.
Fun concept!
My family and I tried this restaurant while on vacation DC. The pizza was great, so many different ones to try. The cocktail list was really fun too. After dinner we engaged in some seriously competitive pin pong matches that I actually think helped burn some of out pizza calories! So fun!

The three of us shared two takeout pizzas and some risotto puffs of some sort for dinner.. all were delightful and the pizza crusts were perfect.
Be the first to ReplyLoved it. Had easy parking.
Loved it. Had easy parking. Clean. Great and cozy outdoor seating with outdoor heaters and big plants to block the traffic and high ceilings inside if u sit there. Prosciutto pizza was good - we thought it might be better with it cooked or cut up into pieces across the pizza. The red pepper/sausage pizza was incredibly good. Great sauce. Great crust. The appetizers were also very good - absolutely order the meatballs. Liked the wood oven roasted cauliflower - would have loved it if it was roasted a few minutes more. The beer selection is varied snd supports a few local breweries. Loved the RAR nanticoke ipa - apricot and bright. 2 roads coffee stout was so good they ran out. Wine was fine but affordable. The margarita was big - good - tasted like made without a mix which I appreciate. Support this restaurant.

Excellent pizza. Extra potent margaritas. Next to a nice bookstore. Will visit again with friends or family.

Comfortable, casual atmosphere in a well-located part of the city. Wide variety of pizzas that serve one (with a larger appetite) or easily shared between 2 people.
When you're done, there are great games and reasons to linger.
Fun and tasty!
Your neighborhood restaurant
If you want an informal, relaxed and quaint atmosphere, this is the place to go. The food is very good and so is the service. In warmer weather you can sit outside and enjoy you meal.
Be the first to ReplyHip, Casual Atmosphere
Nice place to hang out and get lunch. The vibe is very casual hipster, with fun art and (of course) ping pong tables in the back. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and generally had a nice time. That said, a lot of kids monopolized the ping pong tables while we were there, which was sort of a bummer (but pretty understandable).
Pizza was pretty good - not the best I've ever had but definitely tasty. There are tons of vegetarian options, along with some vegan pizzas. I wish they had a bigger beer selection, especially since Comet seems like the kind of place that would have a lot of taps.
Fun and Funky
WE were in the neighborhood with 2 year old grandkids. Some unique twists. Stopped in to relaxed atmosphere and unusual decor. Staff polite and helpful. Grand-Twins loved the cheese pizza. We also tried a good pumpkin soup, nice salads and experimented with some unusual single serving pizza. Meatball was a favorite. Ping Pong in the back. I recall the restaurant was initiated a while ago by James Beard Award nominated chef Carol Greenwood. You can still play ping pong in the back ( and lots of folks do ! )
