I love that Chola has reinvented its menu with a focus on cuisine from the coastal states of India. From Gujarat on the Arabian Sea to the west, down to Kerala and Tamil Nadu in the deep south in the heart of the Indian Ocean, over to the Bay of Bengal on the east, India's coastal states have a delightful variety of seafood that is largely overlooked in the menus of Indian restaurants in this part of the world. Chola has changed that, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I am partial to the flavors from the southwestern states of Kerala and Karnataka, so my favorites are the fish moilee and the allepy fish curry. The allepy curry harmonizes the tartness of unripe mangoes with the heat of chili peppers to produce a deliciously complex flavor profile, and the creamy coconut milk and diced onions lend a great texture to the mild but flavorful moilee sauce. They use branzino (a fish native to the Mediterranean Sea, rather than one from the Indian Ocean) for the fish curries, but I think the mild flavor of the branzino actually works really well with the bold flavors of these curries. Service is polite, and the layout is spacious and bright.

Delicious and filling, with a pleasant interior and attentive service. I tried the Dak Bungalow House Curry and it was very flavorful and plenty. There was also a very patient waiter answering the questions of an older fellow sitting near me who sounded a lot like Rodney Dangerfield asking "what's this?" for each plate that came to his group's table, and he gave clear and informative answers each time.

The pricing might be on a higher end than other Indian restaurants i've been, but there's definitely a reason to it. All the food was great and their service was amazing as well. A lot of older people were there too, which proves to me that the food really is good! Love the chill, lovely vibe as well. Great for a date night!
Be the first to ReplyJust finishing our lunch at Chola and it was excellent.
Ordered many things on the menu. Two shrimp, dishes, 2 eggplant, dishes, lentils, chicken, tikka song, paneer, grilled mushrooms. Highly recommend the baby eggplant and any shrimp dish. Staff was delightful and helpful in decoding dishes. I was not familiar with papadum was fresh and crispy. Non-was warm right out of the oven. Will definitely be back soon.

Came here for Christmas on a friend's recommendation and the food was really, really good. Staff was fabulous. Music could have been better than the one soporific song on loop, but otherwise would come back again. Highly recommend.

Excellent Indian food that seems a notch above anything else I've found outside of London (I've never been to India). Great service too. Portions are very generous too.
Be the first to ReplyFood was OK.
LAMB Saag, salmon and began barta (eggplant). Wine selection by the glass was not good. Service and ambience was good. There are many better Indian choices in the neighborhood.
Be the first to ReplyReally great Indian food at a rather great price.
Small, and quant in size but large on the flavor. Went the vegan route (against my better judgement) and honestly the food was dynamite. Seasoned and prepared perfectly. Great portion and again, packed with flavor. The cocktails were amazing. Everyone was extremely nice including accommodating us without a reservation. Reservations are definitely recommended.
Be the first to ReplyMost delicious Tikka Masala I've ever had.
The perfect combination of spices and so fresh I have to get take out because I love to wolf it down. Combined with the fluffy butter Naan and rice I'm in heaven. Generous portions too, I always have enough for dinner than lunch the next day. They remodeled and it looks great plus they are soooo nice. I'm so lucky I live a block away and so happy happy happy when I eat their food.

They offer less common Indian dishes than most in the US know. Ordered two entrees, two types of naan, and samosas. I thought the entrees were decent. Chicken Korma and Chicken Andra Mirapakaya Kozhi. These mains were pretty good. Flavors and portion size were good, and the Korma was spot on. Not too many complaints here. They came with rice. The naan was disappointing. Both were not cooked well enough. The paneer cheese naan was bland and clumps of paneer vs. more melted like I've had elsewhere. The garlic naan was similarly disappointing. The samosas were ok. Hard to mess those up. They come 3 to a portion. All in all, I will try some other dishes and see if they improve my take on Chola. Otherwise, Jackson heights is a short subway ride away.

We had dinner on a Saturday night. As expected, the place was humming, good interior, nice ambiance. They have really low ceilings so careful when you get up, you may hit a light fixture. The food was mostly good. The dilliwali butter chicken was average, the lacha paratha was waaay too hard (frankly should've sent it back), but the chicken biryani, kodi vepudu appetizer and lam seekh kebabs were to die for! The biryani came up the dum cover on it, the Shekh kebab was soft and sizzling and the kodi vepudu (is a must have)

3/10/2023 - My friend and I had dinner here last night and everything was delicious! We ordered the eggplant appetizer (delish) and garlic naan for appetizers. I had the salmon (beautifully presented and a huge portion) and my friend had the shrimp tikka masala. No dessert as we were stuffed but we also had a nice bottle of prosecco. The service was top notch and the ambiance was super relaxing.Highly recommend if you're in the area. We'll definitely be back!

5/5Service 5/5Ambiance 4/5I think the food was good here but not anything super special and because I've had far more flavorful Indian dishes in Queens for much less. The pain puri was my least favorite thing, the butter chicken was pretty good and the jhinga bhuna mirchwala shrimp packed a good punch and loved the masala but still feel like I've just had better. Maso Lassi was good! Service was absolutely wonderful though.

It's a cute little spot, host was very warm and welcoming and the food and drinks was ok. Will definitely visit again!!!
Be the first to ReplyThe food that we ordered was pretty good.
I enjoyed the lasoni gobi (cauliflower) but personally felt that the paneer butter masala was bland and had no flavor at all. The dal makhani wasn't bad. Some things were a hit while others were a miss.

We called ahead and let them know we were going to be there to celebrate our engagement. They served a wonderful complimentary dessert that went above and beyond our expectations. This service along with the generous portion sizes and delicious food made the experience superb. 100% recommend to all!

Food is delicious, menu is quite impressive, convenient location to midtown and service is very good. Prices are on the high side, portion size of proteins is fair, but the quality of the food is two levels above most places. Definitely recommend!

We were really surprised at the breadth of different types of food from India. Rather than your usual chicken tikka masala, try the chettinad chicken, momos and the coconut chicken. It felt like the spices were freshly roasted and ground. Excellent !! We will definitely dine here again!

Be the first to ReplyWith so many places in Manhattan and so much Indian food
With so many places in Manhattan and so much Indian food you'd need to ask what's so special? Well I don't really know how to answer that except to say this place is so damned good.Went here on a cold night. Look for the clock sign if you are looking for it. You go down the stairs into warmth and a warm Indian welcome too. The menu has a lot more Coastal Indian dishes and with additional dishes you may not find in some Indian restaurants. Innovative cocktails...try them. There is one with rose hip/juice.The vegan/veg dishes amazing. I had a black lentil Dal..spicy. The pumpkin dish is exquisite. Succulent pumpkin chunks of orange in Indian spice. Wow!!! Curry is so sweet and amazing. I had so many things I wanted. That night the had a lot more dine in than expected. The manager told us they had about 60% take out still. But slow was great in this case as we were not rushed as a party of 8 and enjoyed each savory dish.Btw the biryani went buy with a puff bread on a crock of goodness. I'd try that next!!!!
Be the first to ReplyBeen a while since we have been here.
Still really good food, definitely recommend this place. See pics for food of the dishes we ordered and comments
Be the first to ReplyAmazing service + food is just like home cooking.
Terrific for take out + delivery too. Our favorites include all the daals, naans and the chicken curry. And get the gulag jamun!
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely brilliant.
I'm not sure what it is but the chef is a master of Indian cuisine. From the regular fare you'll find in any Indian restaurant (butter chicken) to dishes you'll likely never of heard of, everything I've had from here is delicious. Try them out, you won't regret it.
Be the first to ReplyOn our first trip to NYC, a coworker of my fiancé
On our first trip to NYC, a coworker of my fiancé recommended that we try this place as I love Indian. This was a great choice. I had lamb which was savory and tender with lots of sauce. One thing to note is, the meals do not come with rice, and an order of rice is about $6, so not cheap, but, it is a HUGE portion of rice. Myself, my fiancé, and my two friends each ordered rice, but we really could've shared two orders with how big they were. Just keep that in mind. If you are an Indian fan and are in the area, you should definitely give this restaurant a try!
