Be the first to ReplyWest Coast Oysters At Chewies, Kits, Never Cease To Delight
Chewies in Kits — corner Yew & 1st — can be seen by oyster lovers as a beacon along the cluster of eateries on the Yew food strip, metaphorically signaling that incredibly fresh & expertly sucked oysters are available in abundance. Better still, its Beach Oysters are priced at 1.75 $ during happy hour, which runs from 5 to 7 weekdays, & 3 to 6 pm weekends. Another better still is one could catch gentleman server/bartender/shucker Angus & colleague wonder shucker Rich or charismatic & witty bartender, Jer on duty when you go in to dine. All of these charming staffers are men of many parts, able to discuss current political issues, which actors are the most inspiring or share delightful pics of their offspring learning skills for the world. Of course, this in the quieter times when they are not super busy making sure all customers are looked after food & beverage wise. The friendly kitchen staff under the helm of chef, Mauricio, are also attentive to that mission. I usually have a few oysters an evening but last night my first lot were so fresh & tasty, I could not resist another small batch. The attentive & charming Angus again taught me further about the terroir of Vancouver Island oysters helping me selects two kinds that revealed different taste profiles, albeit they were not harvested that far away from each other. Thank you. It is reminiscent of places like Burgundy, where small land parcels can vary fairly widely & thus in the wine produced, all delicious. Cast one’s eye around & one sees other patrons tucking into servings of oysters with delight, as well. Chewies have big useful maps of where its oysters are obtained from, with locales on both the east & west coast. What a treat to be served by Angus last night, aided by Rich, as it was by Jer the occasion before. My mother was a great lover of fresh oysters & I have inherited that in my DNA. Those who have oyster- loving DNA should be sure to seek out oysters at Chewies. Posted by S Fuller

Great to learn of the happy hour, and able to have shared plates. Menu was ample to choose from. Oysters were fresh. Service was calm and attentive without any stress despite closing on the happy hour, much appreciated. When the bill arrived, our last wine was still on ‘happy’ deal though we completed our meal way pass the time.

We were seated for lunch. The restaurant was not busy and the wait staff ignored us for over 15 mins. We never got a menu or were able to make an order. It was obvious that the wait staff were more concerned about talking amongst themselves than considering customers. One of our party was a person of color, the only one in the restaurant at the time. We finally got up and left. Will never go back. The rudest experience in Vancouver.

We stopped in for some Oysters and a beer during happy hour. There were a number of servers on staff and on large business party and a couple of other tables. No one else arrived while we were there. We were quickly seated but then it took about 10 minutes for a server to take our order. They had 2 types of Oysters on their menu beach and premium. There were no beach oysters and only premium (from the east coast). We order a dozen since that was our mission… 30 minutes later they arrived…. 5 minutes latter we were out the door. I can’t imagine the wait if you wanted food that required a cook.

We were lucky to score 2 seats at the bar. Here, we saw up close the gentlemen behind the bar and how they all seemed to like each other, enjoy what they do and where they’re at. What about the food? We had gumbo and mussels in white wine. Both well balanced in flavour and highly recommended. P.S. They had Red Truck beer which is another winner

Had an amazing time chillin and enjoying drinks and oysters on a hot summer afternoon. Friendly people and a good choice of oysters

Great place. Oysters could not have been fresher. And inexpensive too. Try their local lager, so good. Easy to write a review and simply say from start to finish all was great. Staff were over the top friendly. Food was awesome.

In all fairness the white wine seafood bowl was quite good (hence the two stars) but otherwise the Monday evening experience was pretty much a disaster. Pan seared salmon (with wild rice) would be expected to have a bit of flavour and texture - at least in Vancouver. Very sub standard. The real down side, however, was the server. Apparently the ‘Chewie way’ for serving wine is to fill up a water glass to the rim so it is impossible to drink without leaning over and ‘slurping’ it up?? And then laughing at Seniors who didn’t consider this a positive experience for dining out! Read your audience, Chewies, and maybe will enjoy more return customers.

We ate oysters here during happy hour (lower prices). They were excellent. The staff were friendly and efficient. We sat at the bar so we could watch the staff shucking the oysters. The prices were good. We will definately return on our next Vancouver trip.
