Cha Kee is one of those bougie Chinese restaurants in NYC
Cha Kee is one of those bougie Chinese restaurants in NYC that prioritizes aesthetics over flavors. The inside of the cafe is super clean and all the plating is super nice. Unfortunately, the quality of the food was very hit or miss.Between the five of us, we ordered:- Black Pepper Beef Tenderloin ($25): presented beautiful in a fried bowl of taro. The black pepper beef tenderloin has been stir fried in vegetables. Unfortunately, the beef itself was incredibly tough. Even cutting the small chunks up to smaller chunks was really difficult. The sauce was also way too salty and sweet. We couldn't finish this dish.- Char Siu Fried Rice ($16): an average rendition of your typical fried rice at 2x the cost. Ours came with very small chopped up char siu and a couple pieces of shrimp. - Sweet and Sour Pork Belly and Jowl ($25): I was most disappointed by this dish. The sweet and sour sauce was overwhelmingly sweet and way too sticky. The pork was tough to bite through. I prefer the panda version. - Mussels ($15): my favorite dish of the bunch! The mussels were large and juicy. The deep fried mantou could then be used to soak up the juice, which almost had a okonomiyaki flavor to it with the additional seasonings. Really yummy and probably the only dish I'd order again if I came back. The whole place was being run by two people the entire night so service was molasses slow. Getting seated took 15 mins, getting menus took another 15. Would highly recommend blocking out a decent chunk of time if you're intending on dining here. Maybe their lunch menu is better, but I think for dinner, there's better places in Chinatown to frequent.
Be the first to ReplyI like the aesthetics but the portions are too small.
Scan the qr code on the table for the menu or explicitly ask a worker for menus. If you're getting a baked dish and it comes in an all-clad metal dish, be careful. Everyone in my group who ordered that burned their hands accidentally haha. The fried mantous were so good - even my grandma was a fan! I liked the fried calamari
Be the first to ReplyThe food was overall very good.
Everything was well seasoned. The taste of the cheese and sauce on the Brussel sprouts were there, but the dish itself is too salty at times. The Garlic bread was very soft and tasted well with the tomato sauce that accompanied it, it just had too much cheese on it.The Spicy Wings weren't really spicy but were well seasoned. They were big, crispy, and juicy, and having all three of those combined is a hard thing to do. They were served with chips which tasted fine and ranch which helped cool down the wings as they stayed hot for a while. The fried rice wasn't anything speacial, tasted like any generic fried rice. The Beef Pho had great taste to it, a lot of MSG was added though. There was a good amount of broth and noodles. The Bone Marrow was a great add with it's soft meat.It looked like there was only one server working but he was doing an amazing job. He kept up with all the customers as the place was getting packed. The place was big and could fit a lot of people, I give it to him that he kept up with everyone. All in all the food was great and the service was amazing, I would love to come back and try their breakfast and lunch menus.

I have gotten dinner takeout twice and thought it was a nice addition to the neighborhood. The cauliflower and rice dishes and cha kee salad were all very generous portions. The romaine lettuce dish and shrimp Xo were delicious. If you are looking for something a little different give this place a try.

I came here excited to have Hong Kong diner food but I came during dinner hours and they have switched menu. Nevertheless, I tried their dinner with my uncle. We ordered the beef Ho fun and chicken Katsu. Extremely overpriced for Chinatown and with mediocre taste. The beef was not tender and hard to chew.

I missed Hong Kong so much after going on a trip with my sisters recently. It's a type of comfort food for me. Their HK milk tea (I got the hot one) tastes just like Hong Kong. Sooo comforting.

Came here to get lunch and I got their spaghetti pork chop with cheese. I ordered through the phone and they didn't bother saying thank you at the end. So I went in there and I didn't even get a hello welcome from any of the servers because they were chit chatting and I had to look for my order my self. I also believe this restaurant is cash only. But even though I'm not dining in I should at least get a thank you/ have a nice day. Maybe I'm just thinking too much but whatever. Spaghetti pork chop: 4/5; the food is actually really good. The food was still hot in general since it was baked with cheese. Spaghetti was decent can pass the test. Pork chop was super crispy and good. I really enjoyed it despite their service being like that. I would only get this item from this place because their price is decent. Less than $10 in Manhattan not bad. Overall; I would come here again since their food is good. They just need to be more attentive for their service.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is average.
The reason why we come is because the wait is much shorter. Their hk style milk tea is not bad. Bake rice and toast are average.

Came here for dinner and was informed that the cha chaan teng menu was only for breakfast and lunch. Dinner has a separate menu. This review will only be for dinner. Came here at 6:30pm and place was pretty empty. Ordered 3 items: gyoza, beef tenderloin, and fried rice. Items are family style. Ingredients on the beef tenderloin was probably the most interesting of all of them. The gyoza was good (crispy exterior) and the fried rice was nicely seasoned. I did want to get a veggie but the items on the menu are pretty limited. Managed to bring home leftovers. Portions would be good for 3-4 people. Hope to be able to come back here and try their cha chaan teng menu.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food.
We ate family style and every dish was pretty much a hit. I am of Chinese descent and generally hate Asian fusion. This chef knows food! Decor was pretty. Took off 1 star because service except for the woman server was amateurish. She was on the ball. They suggest to eat family style but she was the only one who brought serving utensils with the food! One waiter once he took order was not helpful . In all fairness, NYTIMES had just given rave review so they were slammed but not hard to bring food with a spoon . Standouts were sweet and sour pork which I would never order but was outstanding not that gloppy overbreaded slop. The curry chicken had great depth of flavor. Milk tea soft serve was terrific. They were reasonably priced and their breakfast and lunch menu even more so. In the heart of Chinatown and a great destination!

Eclectic dishes by a chef who is willing and able to create new dishes. Delicious food. Japanese influenced decor. This was our first time, but we are sure to go there again, and again.
Be the first to ReplyI used to visit Cha Chan Tang A LOT before the pandemic.
Especially since I worked in the Soho area and would often walk over to Chinatown after work. This past weekend was my first time here, since they moved next door into the space. I noticed that they kept a lot of the old decor from the previous restaurant. Pros: - The HK Milk Tea is still bomb - Bathrooms are clean - Tables are much more spacious than they used to be - You can scan the QR code and order via the website, eliminating the need to wait for a waiter to notice that you're ready to order Cons: - You have to line up to wait for a table, there's no list to put your name down and then come back 20 minutes later - I'm pretty sure the prices went up a little I had the ham & egg sandwich and the rice roll with assorted sauces. My mom had toast with condensed milk and the salmon and roe fried rice. I really liked her fried rice - it was just the right amount of salty. Service was friendly and efficient.

As someone who grew up eating Chinese food, their more traditional dishes were really good. I highly recommend the sweet and sour pork jowl and the romaine lettuce. One star off for the Dan Dan noodles being bland. Their milk tea is also really good! It's definitely on the slightly pricy end for chinatown - but some of the food really hits like home
Be the first to ReplyCame here for lunch with friends.
This place used to be next door as "Cha Chan Tang" - sign next door says it moved next door. More spacious and indeed - they don't take reservations if you are dining in so you get you name on the wait list. Make sure to have proof of covid vax when are arrive. They will check and one person in the group must sign in with name, contact #, and vax lot # (strange that you have to list the last one but ok). They will not seat your party unless you are all present. Variety of food and drinks to choose from the menu...Had sliced buttered bread with condensed milk, regular and curry fish balls (that was good), chicken wings in coke sauce and pork chops with onions on rice were ok, spam and egg sandwich. Wanted to try both wings but they ran out at 1:30pm on a Saturday. Drinks: water and Hong Kong style teaDecor is nice as you walk in... oh ok..check out the restroom...one for men and one for women. they have the bidet toilet and the seat is nice and warm LOL. Restroom is good for those who require accessibility. Good thought in that and it was clean inside. Overall service was good.

What used to be Cha Chan Tang is apparently under new ownership. I came here twice- for breakfast & for lunch and their food just isn't the same. The menu here is more extensive and the food are very similar but the recipe and taste for all the dishes were different, it was nowhere close...the baked pork over fried rice with tomato sauce was gross! I swear every bite I took, it felt like I was eating dog food. The pork chop was rubbery and the rice tasted like it has been refrigerated, days old rice. The wings with coke sauce and Swiss sauce both tasted the same. Surprisingly, my husband really liked the fish fillet w/ sweet corn sauce. He likes any fish that is filleted. Their breakfast items were okay. I wouldn't eat it again though. Milk tea was bland. Atleast the service was friendly and the food came out quick.

Picked up dinner on my way home for the first time from Cha Kee. I read the great review in the NY Times. The food was delicious! It's much higher quality (and priced accordingly) than other restaurants nearby. What I liked about the food is that it was at once familiar (Cantonese/Chinese) with surprising touches of flavor from Japan/SE Asia.I ordered the cucumber pickles, Macao curry chicken, branzino in banana leaf, Lobster uni fried rice, and happy Buddha delight. The branzino was amazing- had so much flavor with shrimp paste and citrus flavors. The fried rice had large chunks of lobster and pieces of Uni. Full of umami flavors. The curry chicken had olives- with more Portuguese flavorings than an Indian or Japanese curry. Much smokier and not as hot-spicy. I will definitely order again! This is not food you can find anywhere else!
Be the first to ReplyThis is not your standard Chinese restaurant in Chinatown.
Can here for dinner and was really pleasantly surprised. In my opinion, Chef Akiko makes a bold attempt to elevate very traditional, standard dishes found throughout Chinatown through the selection of ingredients, preparation, and presentation. Not to say that standard Cantonese dishes are bad or pedestrian - they have a very special place in my heart, my palette, and my stomach. However, I think there is a desperate need to make people recognize that Chinese food is more than $5 pork fried rice and chow fun.Anyway, philosophical kudos aside, Chef Akiko makes some seriously good food. I was always a fan of the jelly fish in the middle of the cold cut platter at Cantonese banquets, but change that up a little bit and give it a ma-la twist... *chef's kiss* The pork jowl sweet and sour pork was nicely fried and the meat was soft and packed with flavor. The shrimp was worth getting your hands dirty for... and I hate eating with my fingers. This experience kinda reminds me of eating at Mr. Jiu's in San Francisco... with a more relaxed ambiance. If you're looking to switch up your Chinatown experience and try Chinese food taken up a notch, I would recommend giving Cha Kee a shot. You won't regret it.
