I hadn't been to this restaurant in over 6yrs so I was
I hadn't been to this restaurant in over 6yrs so I was skeptical. I remembered the she crab soup being amazing and it is still amazing. I went on Valentines Day so I treated myself to dessert, OMG if you love chocolate brownies you won't be disappointed. I'm glad I gave it a try again and it was awesome

I went in with high expectations but was greatly disappointed. We got the she crab soup, blackened chicken pasta, and the spicy fried chicken. I would probably give this place 0 stars if I could. The portion of the pasta is ridiculous given the price. Not to mention, the chicken in the pasta tasted stale and lacked any flavor. The chicken in the fried chicken sandwhich was burnt to the point that it was impossible to bite into it. The she crab soup was the only save and grace, it was rich and creamy. Overall, awful joint and would recommend skipping.
Be the first to ReplyWe had an awesome evening at California Dreaming! Beautiful
We had an awesome evening at California Dreaming! Beautiful waterfront location. The food was excellent. I had the Low Country Boil ~ it was great and spicy like I like it. Others had the Shrimp Tacos and CD Salad. The Chocolate Brownie was delicious and a great way to end our meal! Ask for ALEX~ he did a great job serving us!
Be the first to ReplyWow , what a change! Charleston institution that has
Wow , what a change! Charleston institution that has passed its prime , minus the beautiful panoramic views. The menu states that they have prime rib every day after 4 pm. The waitress informed me that they didn't have it today. Should've just went with another red meat but went with the blackened chicken pasta. There wasn't a dam thing that was blackened about that. Not an ounce of spice or flavor. My mother who was dining with me ordered the fried shrimp and we were given the fried platter . Ok no problem . It was good. Not good enough though. Sorry friends but Im pissed!!! And I don't mind saying it. I'm not gonna make a scene in the restaurant but come on. And it was barely warm!! And we just ate there today . Now I'm in my hotel eating a leftover baked potato
Be the first to ReplyMy husband and I first discovered this place 15 years ago
My husband and I first discovered this place 15 years ago and would eat here often, coming most often for what was then literally the best Cobb salad ever (the California dreaming salad). It had been 10 years since we'd been back because we moved out of state andwe were so excited to eat here while visiting this weekend. We were both SO disappointed. What used to be rows of fresh ingredients that you'd typically find on a gourmet Cobb salad was nothing more than an overdressed mound of iceburg lettuce with tons of shredded cheese, some shredded turkey and ham, bacon crumbles and a few pieces of chopped tomato. It was absolutely nothing special. My husband ate it because he was hungry, but I only took a few bites. Unfortunately, the server didn't return until the end of the meal. When I kindly let her know, she just said, "oh sorry", took it away, and left us the check. More than I was disappointed in the salad, I was disappointed in the way she handled this. No understanding, and no deduction off the bill for a salad I didn't enjoy, didn't eat and didn't take home. Maybe other items on the menu are still quality, but very sadly, this experience really ruined the charm and value of this place for us. We will not be back.
Be the first to ReplyThis California Dreaming location has been a favorite spot
This California Dreaming location has been a favorite spot of my family's since it opened. The food is always perfectly prepared and reasonably priced. Almost every seat in the restaurant offers a great view of the Ashley River and downtown Charleston. This place is well known by locals and tourists, so I highly recommend going online and placing a reservation before you head there. Highly recommended!
Be the first to ReplyWe drive by California Dreaming all of the time and always
We drive by California Dreaming all of the time and always talk about stopping by. Finally got a date night and decided to try it out. I only tried the shrimp tacos, so I'm not sure about the rest, but they were okay. I'm used to the tacos out in San Diego, so this wasn't what I was used to, but if anything else - the views are great.
Be the first to Reply4 stars for the stunning 360 water views of the Ashley
4 stars for the stunning 360 water views of the Ashley River, next to a marina & the bridges of Charleston! It is easily one of my top 10 dining experiences based on the ambience & views. We came early Saturday afternoon without reservations and waited about 30mins instead of 45mins. It gets busy so reservations is a must. 3 stars for the food. Not something my family will often go back to. Just average for the taste. Slightly overpriced for what it is. Serving size is good and can easily be shared. Server is friendly and doesn't take too long to get our orders even with though how crowded it was.I ordered Shrimp & Grits and enjoyed it. My son enjoyed his kids meal. My husband said his pasta was ok.
Be the first to ReplyI try to visit California Dreaming multiple times a year
I try to visit California Dreaming multiple times a year though it's been a while since my last visit. It is still so stunning to see the views of the harbor. I love watching people pull up to the dock in a boat to come in and enjoy fine dining while watching dolphins play. The food is still stunning cooked expertly. Some things have changed though. The kid's menu now has wings but they no longer give crayons. We enjoyed seafood nachos for the table. They are always a hit and my personal plate was she-crab soup and house salad with house ranch. The ranch is so creamy and flavorful. The honey butter croissants they bring to the table are always light and airy with so much rich honey flavor. The server was nice but a little unprepared for our questions. Being here while enjoying a quality meal with family while you watch the sunset on the city of Charleston is always unforgettable!
Be the first to ReplyWe did not have reservations, but we got there right at
We did not have reservations, but we got there right at open. We wanted an early dinner late lunch and requested to sit in the bar area as the views were beautiful over there. Our server I wish I could remember his name was one of the best servers I've had in a very long time. He made sure that we were never without water, napkins or anything else we might need. He offered suggestions since we had never been there before however, we had already looked at the menu and kind of knew what we wanted. We started with a side salad, which came with a croissant with like a honey butter on it. I forgot to take a picture cause I drove right in. I also opted the house dressing. It was a honey mustard-based and it was delicious. Then we got our entrรฉes. My mother got a prime rib and green beans. She needed some horseradish and our server went and mixed some creamy horseradish up for her, and she said it was outstanding, I got the sirloin and mashed potatoes and it was absolutely perfect. I couldn't come close to finishing it. overall it was a great experience and can't wait to go back!
Be the first to ReplyFor what this is, it's very good.
Nestled in a marina, and didn't in the water, it's definitely not something you'd just bump into. Furthermore, the name of the place given that it's in SC is somewhat suspect. The place doesn't exude Cali vibes either. The seats are spread out. With a step up bar that is in the front. When you walk past the bar, they have ample seating spread out the span of the building. The seating tables are also spaced nicely so people aren't sitting on to of one another. Ok- now for the food. Must get the croissants and honey. So good. The croissants remind me more of a bun than a flaky croissant- but it doesn't matter. It's really good. The table also got wings and they devoured them. I got the shrimp tacos- very tasty. The rest got a club sandwich and burgers. Everyone was pleased.

We came here on a Friday night around 7:30pm and waited 1 1/2 to be seated. Understandable but they close at 9pm so we were a little nervous. The place was packed so it must be good. The views in the restaurant were phenomenal overlooking the River with a 360 view. There were fireworks from the baseball stadium that made our view even more magical. I got a $10 watermelon cocktail, drank that in 4 sips and it was gone, but it was good. The croissants were ALL they were cracked up to be. Light, hot, semi-sweet, and fluffy! The house bacon, honey mustard dressing was tasty and the salad. The she crab soup was thick and full of crab! The prime rib was a bit dry but otherwise delicious. The server seemed busy but was very nice.

Be the first to ReplyI have read the reviews of this restaurant and it is true
I have read the reviews of this restaurant and it is true this place is a "hit or miss". My daughter went with her husband and really enjoyed it when they came for lunch. She returned with myself and my mom for dinner. Our reservations were for 30 minutes earlier than when we were seated. The restaurant was very busy so that did not really bother me. We then were seated next to the bar in a booth for four with us three, a toddler and a baby in an infant seat. Once again, they were crowded so we made room for everyone. Our waitress was very sweet and we ordered the pimento cheese with pepper jelly and it was absolutely delicious. My daughter and I ordered salads and my mom ordered the chicken pasta. It took over an hour for our food :( but the food overall was good. I did not care for the ranch dressing on my salad. It was warm and tasted watered down which I assume the salad had been sitting there a while before being served. We were all freezing and the music was very loud- like unusually loud. We did ask for the music to be turned down and they did. I probably would return but at a time they are not so busy.
Be the first to ReplyI broke my own rule of letting someone else's opinion
I broke my own rule of letting someone else's opinion influence me and haven't been here yet because of that! It ended up going above and beyond the naysayer's opinion!I did make a reservation and when I arrived it still took them 30 min to seat us even though the restaurant wasn't crowded... but despite thatttt, this place is gorgeous. There's ample parking and you get a gorgeous view of the harbor downtown, as well as the sunset. My friend and I ordered the croissants as an appetizer -- totally recommend! Then we shared the salmon entree and the daily fish, which was branzino! And it was the ENTIRE fish. It was lightly fried, but not deep fried, so you could still taste all of it, and it was perfectly crispy. The mashed potatoes were really good too. I got the watermelon margarita which was delicious and refreshing, and can only imagine how much more delicious it would be with jalapeรฑos! (They ran out of them) Also want to give a shout-out to our server; he told us he was newer there and had only been there about a week, but we never would have guessed it. He was so friendly, accommodating to our questions, and made sure to check on us.I'll definitely be coming back!
Be the first to ReplyOk ok.
Something has to give. I grew up in Columbia SC so I know what the real California Dreaming like. This one is the worst on food but best on views. I don't know why I come still but I come once's a year to this location and to date they have never gotten my whole meal right. The last 4 times. They leave something off. Either my main meal, which happened twice. My salad which happened 3 times or all of it. The staff seams really nice but they're always in the weeds. Being from the industry I get it, but I never even get checked on until my meal is over when they bring the bill. This time I only saw a manger walking around FaceTiming the whole time. Glad she can multi task. . That can't be a good look for a restaurant when the food and service is lacking. Maybe start with the top of the leadership team. I can't wait till next July to see what they leave off next time. At least we always come back. Be glad my mom likes this place.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointed.
Please bring back the potato soup. I'm allergic to shellfish and really enjoyed the loaded potato soup with your salad.I miss the prime rib too. It's hard to find now unless you go to a $$$$$ restaurant.

The Fish of the day was delicious, however the mashes potatoes were cold after a second try and you can see how burnt the mixed vegetables were. Ethan the server was great!!

Be the first to ReplyWell I must say I'm sooo disappointed :( California
Well I must say I'm sooo disappointed :( California Dreaming has always been a favorite. Buuutttt no longer. I don't think I will cry. The service was slow, food was awful. Like taken out of a freezer and cooked real quick awful. So long CD. An era of amazing fried shrimp and flounder has come to an end. I feel like they have conformed to the epidemic excuses and cheap food. Don't waste your time waiting for a table.
Be the first to ReplyNever disappointed! Beautiful scenery, great customer
Never disappointed! Beautiful scenery, great customer service, and delicious Cal Dreaming Salad, Honey Butter Croissant, Creamed Spinach and the cheesy chicken dish that I can't remember the name of!
Be the first to ReplyPlenty of parking.
The best she crab soup we've had the entire trip. Wish the outside menu wasn't so limited but we got a drink and enjoyed the outside until the table was ready.

The food here is not exceptional but was quite good and everyone in our group of six was happy. Nice ambiance and fairly quiet for a large restaurant.

I'm stuffed!!! The only reason they didn't get 5s is because of the wait post reservation time. We were having a surprise birthday dinner for my dad and they wouldn't seat us until the entire party was here Really?! So we did the surprise in the waiting area. The chicken tenders were average. They were a bit too bready. I ordered the Roasted Salmon, Mashed Potatoes & Seasonal Veggies (broccoli). They were great! I was stuffed.
Be the first to ReplyOur dinner was awful.
Our server was horrendous. Started when I asked the waitress what the fish if they day was...she said I haven't worked in a month. I don't know. Didn't bring plates for our apps and then left the dirty app plates on our table the entire meal. My husband's chicken New Orleans was dry as a bone. My French dip came with no au jus until I asked and it was dry and flavorless as well. I won't eat here again.
