Be the first to ReplyDisappointing - too expensive and unsatisfying services
I was honestly disappointed about the Douala Starland Hotel and its quality, especially in comparison to the excellent quality of Starland YaoundĆ©. While arriving in the room , I wanted to take a shower, but the shower head holder was broken and fell on my head hitting me badly. This is certainly nothing new and the cleaning team must have already seen it when they cleaned the room. I therefore cannot understand why the room has been given to a guest. The same is true for the hairdryer which was not functional. Unfortunately, the entire hotel does not have one hair dryer as a backup plan which is not in a wall. If you had one normal hairdryer for a plug, we could have easily had a solution. I was then moved to another room. While moving, I realized that there were no shower gels or shampoo, I guess they may have been forgottenā¦ Overall, if you know the rooms in YaoundĆ©, you will be seriously disappointed by Douala. The hotel is old and does not give you the same nice feeling than YaoundĆ©. For the price and comparing it to other hotels in the same price range - such as K hotel - the rooms are overpriced, too small and disappointing. My worse experience however concerns your kitchen and services. While the quality of our conference`s lunch was really excellent and tasted great, I was really disappointed about the breakfast and the room service. Concerning the room service, I ordered a 12.000 Mozzarella salad to my room. The amount of salad that arrived was ridiculously small. Half of a mozzarella on a tiny little number of veggies and salad. I counted three (!) salad leaves in total. I understand that mozzarella and veggies are expensive in this country, but you could have at least given a proper number of green leaves. The salad was like an insult and charging 12.000 for this is really ridiculous. For 12000, one excepts a salad that could feed. Otherwise, you would really have to reduce the price. I had a similar experience at breakfast. Unfortunately, there were a couple of flies all over the buffet. (I appreciate that on the second day, you put candles to avoid that). I don`t like the warm food provided there so I asked if I could have some freshly made Crepes. I was told that I could only have the Crepes that were already lying next to the Bread. However, I tasted them, and these were cold and not fresh ā the whole idea of a good Crepe is that it is freshly made and warm. I appreciate that the kitchen in YaoundĆ© does them freshly. I asked the lady who makes eggs if she could do me a fresh one, but she refused ā even though there were no other clients and I saw that the kitchen had the batter to make them freshly. However, she refused and preferred to watch videos on her phoneā¦ This is really disappointing. Unfortunately, the fruit salad in the little glasses was also not fresh, several fruit were bitter. In addition, I was really disappointed about the slowliness of the reception during our conference. I asked the reception to print our documents at 7am in the mornings. At 8.45, the documents ā which were important for the conference ā were still not available. I was told that there was a printer problem ā however, I wonder if you really only have one printer in the entire hotel. We also asked to have a coffee break at 10 but had to call several times until the snacks etc were finally delivered at 9.58. For a high end luxury hotel, this is unacceptable. Finally, while checking out I was asked to pay for two bottles of water from the fridge. However, no sign in the room ā neither in the wardrobe nor on the fridge ā indicated that this was a paid serviceā¦ It was not obvious at all that that was a Minibar. In addition, one has to wonder why a hotel for over 100k a night charges for water from the fridgeā¦ Given the fact that there is K Hotel in Duala which has the same prices per night, but a really excellent breakfast, new rooms and excellent service ā I strongly recommend going to K instead of Starland.
Be the first to ReplyBetter Customer Service Needed
The hotel is very clean and is found in a central location. However the customer service should be improved and the staff should be more engaged. The 7th floor is really hot and my room stayed at 28 Degrees Celsius even though the aircon was sent at 16Degrees C. Please work on the customer service.
Be the first to ReplyGood hotel
Lovely hotel, rooms are spacious, clean and have a very nice view. Place is rather calm, which suits me great. Food at the terrasse is really good and breakfast also was rich and varied. A positive experience in general, I recommend. One small detail, for such great rooms, it is a pity that the shower heads be of such bad quality. It would be a good idea to change them. I personally had a hard time showering every day.
Be the first to ReplyShort experience of Star Land Hotel
The pillowcases had stains. The rooms were otherwise clean, and the room smelt fresh. I was surprised that the room was not sprayed for mosquitoes especially after I saw one. The atmosphere was generally great, but the hotel could do better in making information available. The staff were courteous and helpful. Good location for access to airport.
Be the first to ReplyVery nice hotel, keep the standard (commercial training needed for some staff)
Hotel well renovated but some rooms still need to be renovated too Reception personnel is great (restaurant and other personnel too) but administration team (reservation team) need to be more commercial oriented. For example as regular and historical guest (since 7 years now), I asked since a week, for 1 night credit note due to a confusion on a recent cancellation and received a non commercial "no" for a simple request which could be treated/corrected differently...I paid finally and hope they'll still correct: it's not a matter of money but a symbol for a commercial approach... But very nice hotel, keep the standard
Be the first to ReplyExcellent location with clean cosy rooms
I had a great time staying at this hotel. The staff are very helpful with excellent cusomer service. The buffet breakfast was good. The clean and cosy room provided the comfort required after a busy day.

Great hotel, excellent customer service and very well appointed room. Close to almost everything. The hotel is located in a very safe neighbourhood. I will recommande this hotel for business trip. Will book again.

Excellent rooms with great views of the city.
I was not able to use the facilities except for the restaurant. Great breakfast menu especially the choice of natural juices and fruits. Could be expanded to add a bit of pizzazz. After a few days the menu became very predictable.
The TV was a bit of a disappointment. Very little programming in English. Missing popular channels like CNN and Bloomberg. Instead lots of French channels with focus on soccer and life in France which is a bit of an overkill.
On balance a good stay and if they can keep their prices competitive, I will come back again.

4 day stay in Douala
Excellent, from airport collection, to check in and service throughout. The pre checking online works, reducing the check in time. The restaurant menu was reduced due to COVID19, but perhaps should now be re-instated.

1) I occupied Junior Suite NĀ° 701 pn the 21st of May 2021. I did not appreciate the fact that there was no hot water in the bathroom.
2) The quality of reception on TV programmes needs to be improved upon.
3) Being an international hotel catering for a wide variety of clientel CNN should be in the bouquet of programmes.
My stay at your hotel
Globally positive. I was happy for my stay there because I found it simple and easy. My recommendation would be to improve fitness center because it has only four machines and one of them are out of order. I suppose that you can allocate more room to that to allow many people working on the same time.
Be the first to ReplyRun-down hotel with many facility problems
This hotel has serious of problems. It's been seven days since my first check-in and I was forced to move 6 times. Each time with a different problem:
- The 1st room was not yet cleaned and there were dirty towels lying on the floor when I first entered.
- The 2nd room had a lock issue, as the security hinge from inside won't stay in its position to prevent people opening from outside and enter your room.
- The 3rd room which looked fine at the time, although the TV was on when I first entered and the remote control was apparently broken so the TV couldn't be turned off. No one had reported this to the management, so I became the first one to discover this issue. I had to wait someone to bring me a new remote control despite that it was close to mid night and I just had a 24 hour flight and experienced 2 changes of rooms. The room lasted for a few days until the shower stopped having hot water one early morning. I found this at 6 am when attempted to take a shower and get ready for a meeting. I was told that no technician was on duty so I had to move to another room (although I proposed to just borrow another room to take a shower for the time being and wait for the problem to be fixed later in the day, but that was apparently not an option).
- The 4th room started to drip water from ceiling after one day. It was the air-condition unit above the ceiling that had some issues. Given that it was past mid-night and probably there won't be technician again, I put a bucket and a towel under the dripping spot. The water dripping stopped after a few hours luckily (although I had to sleep through the dripping sound). However, after one day it started to drip water again, this time was from multiple sources in the same area, and in higher frequency. It resulted in slippery floors and I put the bucket again while calling the reception to explain the issue and asked for a technician. But they only sent a room service staff to check after calling three times. Finally the staff reported the issue and a technical came and started to work on it. He brought a pink cylinder that looked like a gas tank. He opened the ceiling and tried to link the tube from the cylinder to the aircon unit, the tank made a huge noise like gas leaking in a rapid speed, with some sort of unpleasant smell (unsure if it was poisonous). I was scared because all these was done while I was sitting near them working on my laptop. I had seriously doubt if the cylinder would have exploded but I was told not to worry. The technician was unable to fix the dripping issue after all and I was told to move to a fifth room. I had to move the room myself without any help.
- The 5th room immediately had smell of cigarette. When I demanded the receptionist to change room, a room service staff came with an air spray and asked if she could just cover it up by spraying. I refused and asked for another room. She said all room was full. I asked to speak to the manager. They asked me to wait, after half an hour they came with another room key (so the room was full was a lie).
- The 6th room had very unstable internet connection and mobile signal (when I turn my wifi off). While in the previous rooms the internet would need to be reconneced every hour, in this room it had to be connected every minute on my mobile device (no exaggeration).
- Everyday the housekeeping standard was different as somedays they only supply 1 towel, some days the floor mat was lacking, while others the hand towels were lacking. Yesterday they came to deliver additional towels in the evening while today there wasn't. There was no quality standard or check on the housekeeping or whatsoever.
As a conclusion, I don't think the hotel has a facility that meets the basic international standards. It would be equivalent to a two star hostel/high way motel level in any developed country. Other key concerns for future guests:
- There is no laundry service on Sundays.
- The Gym is not constantly air-conditioned and users would have to turn on after entering the room, which takes long time to cool off. There is a motion sensor in the gym that if there is no movement in the gym, the lights and airco will go off automatically. The sensor is installed at the entrance so when someone is on the treadmill the sensor would count as if nobody is in the gym. So the lights went off every time I am in the gym, which is quite annoying.
- There is a rooftop bar but there is no sign how to get there, and it's quite complicated to discover by yourself frankly.
- There is no duo lock in the guestrooms. There is no chain lock that can stay on when you are sleeping. As mentioned before, there is a manual security hinge that you can pull down every time you are ready to open the door to someone, but the hinge will not necessarily remain positioned when you remove your hands (although in some rooms I've stayed they did remain their positions). The hotel staffs told me that the hinge was not meant to remain where you position them. When I challenged them that this is not the standard of a normal hotel, as most hotels have duo-factor security locks, The hotel staff then replied that every hotel had their own standards. So they admitted that their standards is far below any international standard.
- The staffs are not properly trained. The first night when I was at the reception, I was asked for my room number while there were another person right next to me. I purposely wrote the room number on a piece of paper and handed it to the receptionist, but he read the number out loud in front of all the presented parties that made me exposed my room number in front of others. This was one of the basic training that every hotel should have done to their staff for client's safety and privacy but here minimal training is lacking. Technicians can never fix anything as they always lack this or that tool (and can't find other solutions). Hotel staff generally has an attitude (again due to lack of training).
- Every time when called for a service, I'd have to call multiple times in order for anyone to come.
When communicated my experiences and disappointments to the manager the only feedback I got was sorry. There is no customer service standards or relationship manager to properly handle this issue.
