Bistro Campagne Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
A Big Miss; A "One Off"?
A Big Miss; A "One Off"? We have eaten as this lovely French bistro many times. During our most recent visit, the food and atmosphere were, as usual, excellent. BUT it took 40+ minutes for our entrees to arrive. When we placed our order at 8:15, the restaurant was not at all crowded. Folks who were seated at an adjacent table 15 minutes after us received their entrees before us. When my entree arrived, it was clear from the warm (not hot) plate that it had been sitting on the keep-warm shelf for some time. Of course, the kitchen is to blame. But so is the waitress, who should have monitored our order more carefully, especially after I inquired about our meal half-way through our long wait. The manager might have been a bit more sympathetic once I mentioned it to him. Not a good experience. But hopefully a one-off. We will give Bistro Campagne another try, and hopefully the dinner experience will return to its previously high standards. Roberto Respighi
A disappointing last meal here
Sadly, the food was unrefined, gloppy sauces disguising proteins and attempts to appear French when it was clear the cooking style was pedestrian at best. Excellent staff and service could not rescue this disaster.
I think I'm done with this place.
Whereas the food continues to be very good, the service, attitude and policies of the restaurant are in free-fall. After making reservations online (no other method is allowed), I received a request to keep our dinner to less than 90 minutes. I doubt that I've ever passed the 90 minute threshold, so I didn't at it much mind. I didn't consider how that time stamp would be enforced, however. The food was excellent, but seemed fairly dialed back. Here's a red flag: want to start with bread? Separate line item. You'll be paying for that. Want a refill on your iced tea? Sorry, your glass has been promptly removed after you finished. I've been coming to this restaurant for many years, and have enjoyed countless wonderful meals here. However, in recent months, I have been noticing a steady decline in the experience. From the bum's rush level of service to the hostess clomping around in overalls (!), Bistro Campagne is no longer even trying. There are too many great restaurants in Chicago to put up with whatever it is this restaurant is trying to become. Thanks for the memories.
Have been wanting to try out Bistro Campagne for a few
Have been wanting to try out Bistro Campagne for a few months now and was able to finally try it during Chicago Restaurant Week 2024. For the menu it was actually a very well priced deal on CRW. Large amount of food with delicious flavors and high quality ingredients. So much to the point that we took half of our main courses home and they kept very well in the fridge for the next day. Lovely restaurant and cute atmosphere. Felt like we were back in France.
This review is for my visit on Saturday, 10 February.
This review is to express my disappointment with the service experience I encountered. Upon arriving promptly at 5:30 PM with the intention of placing a takeout order, I was informed by the host that takeout service was unavailable on Saturdays and Sundays, a policy which I was unaware of as it was not indicated on your website. The host also mentioned the chef was new, so the kitchen wouldn't have the capacity to package my food. That makes absolutely no sense. I'm sorry. It's nonsense. You have a takeout menu for a reason, no? While I understand that restaurants face operational challenges, the lack of clarity on your website regarding takeout availability compounded my frustration. The discrepancy between what was communicated by the host and what is stated on your online platform left me feeling disappointed and inconvenienced.
I recently dined at this restaurant and had a delightful
I recently dined at this restaurant and had a delightful experience overall. The ambiance was cozy, the service and drink selection impressive. The desserts were a highlight. However, I must mention that the mussels were a bit grainy and had an off taste. I appreciate the overall effort and would still recommend it as a nice dining experience.
First time to this delightful and authentic French Bistro.
It's located in the southern part of Lincoln Square. Restaurant is deceptively large with plenty of seating. Decor is consistent with a French Bistro. The service was fast and attentive but not annoyingly so. Wine selection and cocktails were solid. The real story is the food. It was outstanding. Even the simple garden salad was a treat as ingredients were fresh and seasoned with a perfect vinaigrette. The mussel appetizer was plentiful and tasty. The steak fritte perfect. The Parisian gnocchis were delicious, as was the trout. While I don't indulge in desserts, my companions all did and raved about the bread pudding. Bottom-line, this is the real deal! First time but certainly not my last! I recommend this highly.
Outstanding Restaurant Week experience.
Everything was terrific and the food was DELICIOUS. Great value too. You leave quite full! Can't wait to go back.
Wow this has to be one of my new favorite restaurants in
Wow this has to be one of my new favorite restaurants in Chicago! My friend and I went for restaurant week and loved everything we had (particularly the French onion soup, chicken entree, bread pudding, and crème brûlée). The staff were very warm and friendly. The decor and atmosphere makes you also feel like you aren't in the middle of Chicago, very cozy and beautiful artwork.
Yummy french food - savory sauces will make your mouth
Yummy french food - savory sauces will make your mouth water for more. The Chicken dish is a must, the sweetest sauce & perfectly crispy onion rings. Gnocchi was seared just perfectly & pommes puree has a lovely taste of garlic. Great neighborhood spot with high quality food. Service & staff are great. Only downfall is if you have to sit near doors in the winter months.
Classic French bistro.
Beautiful patio during the summer. Winter is cozy. Must get the dessert!
This was a nice little bistro on Lincoln Avenue,
This was a nice little bistro on Lincoln Avenue, essentially a single-family dwelling refashioned into a restaurant. Very nice ambiance and decor, and looked much like a neighborhood French Bistro might look. There is an outdoor patio/garden for al fresco dining when the weather co-operates ... we couldn't sit there because of the cold, but it sure was attractive. We started out with drinks (all 4 and 5 star selections from their small but nicely curated wine list), and appetizers of the Cheese Plate (5 stars and a wonderful beginning of five cheeses to go with a small baguette) and Bread & Honey (5 stars although we probably didn't need the bread offering since the cheese plate came with some). This bistro is another dining establishment that has gone to a paid-for bread service where bread used to be pretty much free ... but that said, the bread was very nice. For mains our table of three had the Gnocchi Parisienne (a 2 star offering that took quite nice gnocchi and breaded them lightly ... the breading sort of ruining the whole point of soft pillows); Mussels (a 3 star offering that just wasn't the cleanest of mussels ... too much sand in many of the mussels making for a crunchy mouth feel); and the last had the Croque Madame (a 3 star entree that was nice but unremarkable). For dessert we shared a Pot De Creme (a 4 star serving of chocolate mousse with a nice dollop of flavored whipped cream on top) and a single scoop of sorbet (5 stars and some of the best sorbet we've had in years). All in all a nice evening on Lincoln Avenue. Didn't especially like their music list played in the background, but that is a small quibble. If we return we'll try the onion soup and fish offerings ... some of the more French offerings at the Bistro.

Ask a Question |
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue? |
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
