RUN! DON'T WALK to Bertha's! And if you're not from Charleston (like me), then book that flight to Charleston NOW. Worth the $$$ flight AND the food coma. Not surprised this restaurant won a James Beard award. James Beard, if you're reading, please include more minority owned businesses like this! Favorites - the fried dark chicken plate with seafood rice, and green beans (gotta add veggies for that balanced meal) AND the catfish plate with Mac and cheese and corn. Meals come with a drink and hardy cornbread. BIGGEST regret was not getting the shrimp and catfish special with seafood rice. Price - BEYOND reasonable. Can't beat the portion, taste, and SEAFOOD in the low country. I know I'm not getting this type of seafood in TX. Service - doesn't sacrifice efficiency for friendliness. Love watching the staff create and cook behind the window. Reminds me of home. Even though we came during prime lunch time on a Saturday, we got our fresh, HOT food ASAP. Parking - ample. This is a popular and efficient place. We found space, and so will you. Ambiance - No frills, to-the-point family business. Upon entering, you're immediately greeted by a sense of family. Bertha's is a 2-story building with some seating on the first floor and much more seating on the 2nd floor. Why not sprawl out and eat upstairs? 20/10 would recommend. If you're hesitant to come to Charleston just to try this place, let this review be your sign.Shrimp and catfish special, I'm coming back for you!
Be the first to ReplyI was really excited to stop here.
The food was ok. Maybe just an off day? Small portions and it was very expensive for what we received.I do not recommend the shrimp and okra, cornbread, mac and cheese, or red rice.I do recommend the cabbage (if they give you more than two bites), and the baked chicken.

Be the first to ReplyFamily owned and some of the best soul food here in
Family owned and some of the best soul food here in Charleston. It seems like Bertha's has been open forever. A real cornerstone. In terms of food, you can get just about whatever you'd like in terms of "soul". Combinations of protein mains and veggie sides with bread, rice, grits... everything that comes from Bertha's kitchen is good eating. It feels like it is made with love and it really is fairly priced allowing all people access to delicious "home-cooked" style meals.Bertha's is casual. It's about the food anyways and the folks you interact with while there. I once went there after a funeral and was dressed up but still felt comfortable. Expect clamshell plates, cornbread, and some d*mn good fish and grits. Mmm now I'm thinking about lima beans...

Fries chicken was cooked perfectly, fish was seasoned good and let's not forget the greens was on point! The Lemonade topped it off

Don't come to North Charleston and miss a visit to Bertha's Kitchen. Fabulous southern cuisine. A small venue but big taste. Several James Beard awards were displayed on the walls. Collard greens, red rice, green beans, macaroni n cheese all seasoned to perfection. Fried whiting, BBQ ribs and fried chicken were first class in the preparations. Associates were professional and friendly. This location was recommended by the concierge of the Homewood Suites. Great recommendation.
Be the first to Replygood southern comfort food.
no frills just good food. got the seafood rice and it was delicious

GO HERE! I would have never guessed this was a James beard winning soul food restaurant. Don't let the outside deter you, this has to be the absolute most amazing soul food of SIMPLE and delicious 1) fried chicken 2) fried fish 3) dirty rice and beans and 4) gravy I recommend going with friends, portions are big. Order a variety and share.
Be the first to ReplyWe are out of towner, who stopped by on a whim.
A steady stream of patrons let us know that we were in the right place. Food was genuinely good but portions were small.Hours of operation are 10-5 but at 2 pm they were out of certain main soul food cuisine , for example, greens. Can't go wrong by patronizing but just know that menu item availablity may fall short. However, I have no problem going back, when hungry.

I wanted to try this place since we moved here, and when I finally made it I wasn't disappointed! The star of my meal was actually the corn bread - although the fried chicken wasn't far behind. I had the special: lima beans and rice with the aforementioned cornbread and fried chicken, and mannnnnn I cannot WAIT to go back. I didn't even know I liked lima beans!

The food was good wish I got more beans with the Lima beans and rice dinner and less soup. I love the cornbread and the tea to go with my meal as well. Get in early they usually open at 11
Be the first to ReplySurprised to see only a short line full of locals
Surprised to see only a short line full of locals considering the James Beard recognition. We went on Saturday to experience the expanded menu that includes seafood, well worth it as the fried seafood platter was a delight. The $5 fried chicken and Lima bean plate was incredible. I didn't like Lima beans until I had these. If I lived here I would have a hard time not getting them for lunch every day.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible food and a tremendous value.
There is no menu and the line was long, so we felt rushed placing our order. The fried chicken was juicy with a perfectly crisp skin. The green beans were delicious. The mac and cheese was definitely lacking salt. I ordered a side of cornbread and was given a muffin; they put a slab of cornbread in my husband's box, and it was delicious tastier and less dry than the muffin. We had two very generous orders and a drink, and the bill was a little over $20 - such a good deal! I'm sure that regulars have favorite sides, there was a great selection. Great place!

Skip the Mac and cheese and get the fried chicken and Lima beans. Tea and lemonade was overly sweetened. Rice was great.

Soul Food ! Stepping in you will already smell yummy food and almost can't wait to order and eat!Its a no-frills location. No indoor seating is available, but outdoor seating is available outside. You order in the building and can walk out to eat and clean up after yourself after. It is cafeteria-style ordering. We had fried chicken and fried fish with cabbage, mac and cheese, red rice and lima beans rice. We also ordered some seafood salad and a serving of bread pudding.Everything tasted great!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing home cooked food.
Authentic flavors. Southern friendliness hospitality. Definitely a place to visit if you are in the area.
Be the first to ReplyBest food in the Charleston area.
. If I lived in Charleston, I would eat here every day.. I love the delicious collards, the fried chicken is perfect, and the cabbage is like dessert, only better..They are not trying to overcharged you, the price is more than reasonable..If you are looking for scrumptious vittles, food that makes your mouth water, then this is it..If you want Mediocre overpriced food, then keep on going.. Nothing Mediocre here...

I went back twice during my short trip because I loved the fried chicken so much. The crunchy skin was not super salty and the meat was moist on the inside. The fried pork chop was the same, moist with a thin breading on the outside. You could also have as many sides as you want with the meal. My favorite were the okra, collard greens, sweet yam, cabbage and Cajun rice. It came with a delicious corn bread. Be warned that this place does not have a menu or I didn't see one. Both times, I had to chat with the ladies taking orders to find out what I could order on weekdays versus weekends. I also went to this place at odd hours and not during the lunch rush hour, but those customers keep pouring in so there was quite a wait. Partly, I think it's because they have limited businesS hours so make sure you check before you plan on visiting. They have a parking lot shared with a church next door. The service was courteous and nice, but sometimes their orders can get messed up. They make it right though. This is the best valued James Beard winner restaurant I have ever been with no big egos and no fuss with wait list, just some good down to earth Southern grub that satisfies the soul.
