Food wasn't that great.
The chicken tasted like it had sat in the fridge all day and was very watery. Ordered empanadas for close to $20 for TWO?? Also, who puts olives in empanadas? they weren't good. We honestly sent half of our dishes back (don't worry we still tipped good). The steak was the saving grace. Server was kind, very apologetic and attentive. Maybe it was just a bad day but definitely expected more of an effort considering the prices.

Tonight I didn't have food although I have to say it's always good. I love their martinis but the old man bartender is so anti social it's hard being around him.You need new blood friendly trendy people. I always enjoy martinis & always meet cool people. But the bartender with the beard is there too long he's "tired", you need fresh blood
Be the first to ReplyA bit pricey, yet good food and service.
We prefer this spot over the Casino based steakhouse competition.

We tried Bernie's based on reviews and they lived up to their hype. We started with a half dozen oysters and they were chucked nicely and tasted delicious. My husband and I shared the porterhouse special for 2. This could have easily fed 3 people. Staff was very nice and attentive. Food was delicious and can't wait to come back.
Be the first to ReplyInconsistently good food.
Good ambience, great service. The bartenders are great. Most of the staff is dressed in formal attire, as they should for a high end restaurant, some in jeans and boots.
Be the first to ReplyPretty fancy for the area.
Pricey, but fantastic meal.  A splurge for us but good value imo.  Excellent service, 20% gratuity auto included even for a two top which is not common.  We added a bit more anyway, but something to be aware of so you're not put off by it when the check comes.

We've lived in the area for a few years now and have really enjoyed the sister eatery "Crust" right next door (fabulous pizza). Â Four of us tonight decided to try out BHR for the first time since it's the off season and not as busy. Menu is rather small which is usually great as it means the chef can focus on doing those dishes superbly well. Bread brought to table was warm and delicious. They brought out dipping oil as well, but with a big blob of butter smeared on one side. It looked like leftovers from a prior table where someone wiped their butter knife off on the edge of the bowl. Server took our orders though never mentioned the specials (barely spoke at all). Be prepared for sticker shock. This isn't a place you bring picky eaters. Â The wasabi firecracker fried calamari was really disappointing. The breading tasted like plain flour, wouldn't stay on the rubbery calamari, and the wasabi firecracker sauce had zero heat. This was mentioned to the server, who just said "okay" and walked away. There is no soup or salad with any entree. You also apparently don't get refills on your drinks - water, soda, or coffee - unless it's something from the bar. We asked each time our server came by, were told "okay", but nothing was refilled though there constantly was a group of three to five servers standing at the host stand chatting away, ignoring their tables as well. Entrees: Surf & Turf - lobster tail was well sized and not a tiny rock lobster tails. The dodge steak (not filet mignon) was cooked well but needed salt. Raw oysters - nicely briny and fresh. Seafood pasta with pesto - disappointment. Four shrimp, a few scallops, and two baby-sized lobster claw meat with pappardelle pasta, corn, peas, a couple pieces of asparagus stalks, all drowned in pesto. It would have been better with half the pesto, though flavor wise was average. Â Cowboy rib steak with truffles steak fries and braised rainbow carrots. Steak was HUGE, cooked well, lacked salt. The four steak fries were good, and braised rainbow carrots needed seasoning. Overall, meals rated a consensus of "good but for the price I as expecting better" and "I've had a better at _____ restaurant." Presentation wasn't there, out of place orchid flowers on entrees gave odd resemblance to Chinese restaurants. When server brought out ketchup with the cowboy steak, we were kind of shocked. Steak sauce? Mabye....but ketchup with a $60 steak? Â We decided to skip dessert. I will say from past experience from ordering their desserts when dining at Crust that the desserts are well worth a visit.Be aware 20% tip is automatically added to your bill regardless of how many people in your party. Thats fine, though my issue is our service was barely mediocre. Tonight we diners made to feel unwelcome and unwanted since we were interrupting their slow night. We didn't ask to speak with anyone as it didn't seem like it would make much difference if they (manager) was fine with the servers mainly chatting and only going to their tables when there was food or a bill to be delivered. Â The only servers or staff we saw checking on customers were those associated with the private party in the back room and the bartender. Overall, it's doubtful we will make a return visit to BHR. The food was average for a nicer restaurant. Nothing looked like the incredible images posted on their website, and nothing justified the prices on the menu. Their desserts are utterly fantastic, though. Even if the food was more impressive, the service tonight was a big turn off. Â It doesn't matter if it's fast food or the hottest place in NYC - customer service is key. Being treated like you're an inconvenience can sour even the best meal.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is a "hit or miss" for me.
The first time we went was pretty good...we enjoyed it enough to return. Then the second time we went, I don't know if the main chef was out or what, but the food - all of it - was just "under" seasoned. Bland. Uninteresting. Blah. Ho hum. Cafeteria type of mediocrity.
Be the first to ReplyLiterally one of the top 5 restaurants I've ever been to.
Stopped here on our way back from villa roma resort. Had the most succulent, medium rare hanger steak with a Pinot noir and my husband had the pork schnitzel. Both absolutely fantastic. Only thing better than the food was the amazing hospitality and service. Such a hidden gem!!!
Be the first to ReplyI have never had a better steak.
I'm not kidding. Staff beyond friendly. Fully stocked bar . Dessert tray. Raw bar choices......THE SIDES.  If you are traveling east on 17 to get home from upstate....Do Not Miss This Restaurant. It was amazing.

Came from out of town to this place for my boyfriends 30th birthday. We were both pretty excited to try it and left really disappointed. The drinks that claimed to be spicy were way too sweet. The waygu steak tasted like a regular steak which if you've had waygu it cuts and tastes like butter. Unfortunately we paid for overpriced waygu and I called ahead twice to make sure that candles or some sort of birthday celebration was possible and we ordered dessert so that it could be done but we received nothing but disappointment. I really thought this place was going to be great but it really was disappointing. The food isn't terrible but it isn't worth the price you pay when you're thinking you're getting premium quality.

Bernie's is a white tablecloth outpost on the edge of the Catskills. Â It is a high-end fish and steakhouse, and I certainly can see how folks jonesing for a fine-dining experience might enjoy a splurge here. Â Bernie's does execute its menu rather well, and it certainly delivers strong service. Â At the same time, it struck us as a big fish in a small pond, and the value simply didn't hold up well against other fine-dining experiences we've enjoyed. The staff was warm, knowledgeable, and prompt. Â Everyone wore masks properly. Â We also were perhaps a little casual and grungy when we walked in, but they never batted an eye and treated us with the same respect and courtesy as the buttoned-down table next to us. Â Their well-earned gratuity also is included in the tab, which I very much appreciated. The menu features a lot of premium protein from both surf and turf. Â Ahi tuna, lobster, duck, lamb, and five cuts of steak - including a Wagyu beef - all make appearances. Â It is decadent and pricy. Â The options present an eclectic mix of traditional meat, starch, and veg; Asian-inspired dishes like Ramen; and wildcard Mediterranean plates like Branzino. Â There isn't a clear identity here, and my guess is that it's a mix of classic dishes to please longtime customers and newer offerings that reflect the chef's perspective. Â Some of the beef and pork is locally sourced, but it strikes me as a minor scandal that a restaurant billing itself as a fishhouse apparently does not have a single locally-caught fish on its menu. Â I don't know how Bernie's sources its fish, but generally closer means fresher. Â The entrees also seem collectively determined to shake you down. Â It's not so much that the individual dishes are unreasonably priced (steaks for $30-$59 seems fair enough) as it is the lack of range. Â The menu only has two entrees below $30 (and both of those, the pot pie and the meatloaf, are probably the most questionable deals at $29). Â What harm would it do to offer a gourmet burger at $18-19? Â The food itself reminded me of some of the fancier wedding receptions I've been to: competently-prepared premium ingredients with filling portions that otherwise lack distinction, for better or worse. Â My hanger steak ($30) was solid. Â The steak itself was cooked to a perfect rare, the chimichurri sauce was OK, and the steak fries and cauliflower did their duty by taking up space on the plate. Â There was nothing wrong with it -- and I liked the steak a lot -- but it's basically a pricy meat-and-two. Â My wife rated her Branzino (which came with polenta and kale) as pretty good, if slightly overcooked. The bar let us down. Â Bernie's has a full bar, and they deserve credit for including local craft beer selections in their offerings. Â I also appreciate the reasonable pricing on drinks (drafts $6/wine by the glass $7.5/cocktails $11-12). Â But the showpiece is a spectacularly long cocktail menu of more than two dozen classics and standards. Â In my experience, bars with cocktail bibles usually fall back on mixes rather than fresh citrus and syrups -- this was the case with my wife's Margarita. Â My own Manhattan was shaken rather than stirred, which is a basic error on a standard drink that makes a significant difference in the presentation and taste. Â I recognize that these complaints are detail-oriented, but it seems to me that mastering the details is a significant part of what fine dining is about. Â The most straightforward solution here would be to trim the cocktail menu down and train the staff to execute them consistently with fresh ingredients. We love fine dining. Â We also don't mind spending a fair bit of money on a good meal. Â But we also have high expectations. Â So Bernie's may well be the best restaurant within 50 miles, but to us it's just not worth the premium.
