First off, I want to preface this one star rating by stating it in NO WAY reflects the service, staff or quality of food. This review is simply a warning. I am a local resident and have been enjoying the food scene in the Healdsburg area for over 20 years. After my recent experienceI I feel compelled to write this review. Be aware, if you do plan on eating at Barndiva be prepared to have a 19% (yes, you read that right) service fee added to your total bill. We were a party of 4 for dinner for my husband's birthday. Upon arrival we were informed that our locally purchased wine would incur a $40 corkige fee. Thought that was a little high, but oh well. Even though the food was very good the entrées were expensive and the portions small, this was expected from previous visits. Whatever, we were celebrating and enjoying a rare adult night out. When we got our final bill it was over $600 (not including a gratuity!). A definite WTF moment. Upon inspection of the bill I noticed a $190 charge. This was not an automatic gratuity but a service fee. I asked our server for clarification and was told that it was to "cover the staffs' health insurance". Seriously?! What restaurant feels the need to pass an almost 20% service fee onto their customers to subsidize their servers' benefits? (I mean c'mon, you're charging $65 for a 4oz piece of fish.)Not only that, but what type of establishment puts their wait staff in the awkward position of having to explain this fee to their customers? I was very calm and not going to take my frustration out on the very courteous and attentive staff as it is no doubt not their fault. But I can't imagine that there aren't people who don't get upset if not downright irate!Between the corkage fee for two bottles of wine (a total of $80) and the additional 19%, more than 1/3 of our total bill was fees!!!I was never informed of the service fee when I made the reservation, when we checked in with the hostess, nor did I see it on the menu. However it could've been in the fine print and I never saw it. That's on me.I understand that we've had a rough couple of years, and that restaurants got the brunt of it. I know during the pandemic I personally did everything in my power to continue to patronize my favorite wineries, restaurants, delis and mom and pop stores the best I could. But passing this type of a charge off onto your clientele (through the staff nonetheless) feels like the owners are taking advantage of a bad situation. Sad. Plenty of other fantastic restaurants to patronize in the Healdsburg area. Will be steering clear of this one in the future. Too bad, it was one of my favorites.
