Swanky spot near the water.
Delicious food. The chicken was incredible but the pasta was nothing special. The pistachio cake was the best thing I've ever eaten. Cool spot to check out!
Be the first to ReplyGreat place.
We did not have reservations. We lucked out and ate at the bar. We had vegetarian bolognese, the meatball appetizer and the gnocchi. We all loved our meals. Can't say a bad thing about our experience here. Best meal by far of our weeklong vacation!!

We were there in the weird in between time of shifts on a weekend so we had three people serve us which was totally fine. I had the pasta ragú which was just.... Meh. I can't say there was anything particularly wrong but there wasn't anything specifically banging either. The space is big, clean, even nice bathrooms! So this is a neutral review. lol.
Be the first to ReplyWent here for dinner on a Monday night.
. 3 of us with a 7:30 reservation and we arrived about 10 minutes early. We were immediately seated (good so far) and then sat there for about 20 minutes before a waiter came and asked us for drink order. By that time, we wanted to also order our appetizers, but was told by waiter that he can't take drink order and food order together. . Everyone who was seated after us, all around us, were waited on and received drinks, then apps, then main course.... While we sat. Our waiter was horrible!!! I think we were sitting at the designated "ignore us all night" table. He took everyone's orders at tables all around us but absolutely sucked at coming to our table. We finally waved him down after 50 MINUTES we placed app order and were about to add our dinner order to it but he said he'd be back. 20 minutes later our apps arrived. We ate burrata and also prosciutto with melon. Both were really nice. We finished our apps and our waiter still hasn't returned. I finally stopped him as he was walking my IGNORING us. By 8:45, 75 minutes after our reservation , we still had not placed our dinner order and our waiter was MIA. We finally flagged down another server, asked for our check, and paid for our apps and drink. We thought we were going to have a nice dinner with friends, we left frustrated, annoyed and hungry. Had our friends back our house and cooked a pot of pasta for them. What an incredible bummer.

Sadly, have to demote Barbuto to three and a half stars after our Saturday night experience. We had a reservation for 9 p.m. but were asked to wait at the bar. We ordered a drink, and then our table was ready and the host escorted us to it. The drink never followed us over, and the waiter couldn't discern what happened to it, even when we asked him. We ordered the meatball (delicious, as always) and bread to go with it. The meatball came, the bread didn't - just some breadsticks, which were also delicious, but impossible to mop up sauce with them. When we asked our server what happened to the bread he said that the restaurant had run out of bread (!!!) and the breadsticks were free (!?!). How do you run out of bread on a Saturday night? The kale salad, which we usually love, was too acidic and the texture of lumpy baby food. The steak we ordered was generously portioned, but very chewy, under salted, and served with an accompaniment that was a total mystery to me (some kind of sauteed veg? I checked the menu but the there is no hanger steak there). Thank goodness for the crispy potatoes we ordered as a side. Budino was served very cold from the fridge, too thick and just not chocolatey. Keep in mind, there is not much ambience to speak of here. The acoustics are good, but the room feels cold and angular, and the view of the highway doesn't add much to the experience. Take away reliably good food and there is not much of a reason to go here anymore.
Be the first to ReplyBarbuto is terrific.
Really cool far west village location and it's a large space with a big bar (where we had a great house martini prior to dinner, the best way to eat out). The team is friendly from the get go and we felt taken care of by the friendly staff. We went for the roast chicken and it didn't disappoint. Don't expect it to be life changing but it is among the best roast chicken in NYC: juicy with great flavor and an amazing crispy skin served with their version of a chimichurri sauce. Delicious. Also want to acknowledge the calamari salad which is maybe the best version of fried calamari I've ever had. Great place and I'm happy it's here!
Be the first to Replyfood is a daily changing menu which is super cool.

Be the first to ReplyThis place was really a disappointment.
My wife is Italian and I spend 3 months a year there - Italian food, or even inspired by Italian cuisine, this ain't. Tagliatelle with clams, swimming in butter with few clams and grossly undercooked pasta. The pizza with salmon was more interesting, although the crust was over-cooked and the salmon just slapped on. The duck was probably the best thing ordered by the table. The service was also poor. There are better places in the area, I imagine people still come here for the location, which is nice.
Be the first to Reply2 friends and I had lunch after our Whitney Museum visit.
We were well greeted when we arrived. One of us has food allergies and our waiter Ryan was very attentive to the allergy alert. All of our appetizers, main dishes and desserts were absolutely delicious with suggestions by Ryan. Our fried calamari with fresh greens was an unexpected delight. The pastas were al dente, the protein cooked to perfection with generous portions. The restaurant's location is on a quiet street in the very busy Meatpacking District. ¡Buen provecho!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food.
Kale salad and chicken live up to the hype. Pizza and gnocchi also good. JW potatoes super crispy. Our small kids also liked it.

I came here for an early dinner/drinks and we forewent our reservation for a couple of seats at the bar. It is a quaint little spot that had great vibes and a fantastic drink and food menu. The volume was energetic, but not too loud to carry a conversation. There were hooks under the bar to hang your bag without it touching the ground. The bar tender was attentive and we never had to wait long. We ordered food through him and it was out fairly quickly. To start, I had the Autumn Negroni, which was good, and I am not the biggest gin fan, so that says a lot. I ended up getting a second one it was so good! For food, we started with the kale salad, which had an anchovy dressing that I wasn't sure about, but again, it turned out great. We also got the JW chicken and JW potatoes, with the chicken being the better of the two due to the salsa. The pecorino on the potatoes was a nice touch though.

I was so excited to get to dine at a Jonathan Waxman restaurant. Roast chicken is my favorite dish and I have eaten it at many restaurants around the world including the famous Zuni cafe in San Francisco! This restaurant is beautiful and intimate inside though a tad noisy. We had a lovely view of the river from our high top table. we ordered a couple of fancy very expensive cocktails that were quite tasty. Our waiter was an absolute doll!! He was efficient, accurate, and funny!! We started by sharing the kale salad. The portion was generous and tasty! Then of course I ordered the roast chicken and my friend ordered the steak. The steak was well cooked but quite under seasoned. The chicken was well cooked and very tasty. Here's the problem- the chicken comes with a very tasty salsa verde on top which unfortunately destroyed the crispness of the skin. A roast chicken with a soggy skin is just not at all what I was hoping for. This meal was indeed tasty though pricey, the setting and service were excellent but the chicken was a tad disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyI visited Barbuto twice.
Once for a team dinner at a failed startup, once likely after walking the High Line and desperately needing food at an awkward time of the day. Both times I was left thinking that this was a decent restaurant. Portion size necessitates double entrees which is expensive when a failed startup is not footing the bill. The restaurant, like many in Meatpacking, feels airy and spacious compared to typical Manhattan architecture.

Amaaaazing! Book early!! It was an epic dinner with perfect service and delicious food in a terrific location and setting. Like most new restaurants, a little too noisy but that's the style and part of the fun I'm thinking.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a disaster.
I finally get to NY and one of my idols...John Waxmans restaurant. Service: Seated by hostess (super nice). The one and only time we saw the Waiter was when he took our drink order.....see you later. Never saw him again. Tall good looking dude that wanted to spend his time flirting with the Female Bartender. I personally walked up to the bar, brought my empty glasses and got another round of drinks....TWICE. I went to the bus station for an extra napkin and salt and pepper.Food : I had the Dungeness crab pasta. Pasta was way to thick...I lost the crab. Sauce was delicious but not enough of it because the pasta was so thick. My Girl got the world famous Waxman Chickin and Potatoes. I don't know if there is such a thing as "over basting" but this chicken was dry dry dry. The potatoes cooked to perfection. But no seasoning. Bland bland bland. We passed on dessert because no one offered. So since we had no service all night long. I had to pull an old school truck stop diner move. I had to walk up to the hostess (super nice) and pay my ticket. Let's get this straight....I'm an over-tipper. These people work hard. I left 5.00 on a 200.00 tab. I hope they read this and fix things.A restaurant I was soooo damn excited for was embarrassing. And I will pass on the Autographed cook books at the Hostess stand. So many choices in NYC...I picked the wrong one...and I thought it was a lock.A lot of good restaurants have bad nights.....this one is the leader in the Club House.Disappointing!!

On what seemed a very long walk in the rain to the Whitney,Barbuto appeared like an oasis.Wet, tired, and exhausted, we went in, shook off, andsettled into a table. We ordered the Insalata Crudi and the Pizza Salmone Affumicatoand Torta Pistacchio.Sometimes it pays not to plan.

I came here on a Monday night - it started out quiet and when I left the place was bustling. Service was impeccable, with rarely empty water glasses and a clearly dedicated server who took pride in his job. I would say it has become a rarity to get service like this anymore, so it was greatly appreciated.I started with the calamari salad and the smoked salmon pizza. This was probably enough for a meal on its own! Portion sizes were generous. I thoroughly enjoyed the salad - I liked the smoked salmon enough but came away thinking in the pizza format it just didn't fit.The next portion served was gnocchi and Capone. The gnocchi was good but definitely a bit different than what I've had before since it was a bit crispy on the outside. The capone was excellent as was the sauce in which it was slathered.
Be the first to ReplyWe booked a reservation for Barbuto online via Resy.
It was New Year's Eve weekend and the traffic from midtown was even more hectic on Jan 1st than I had expected. The Music Man performance on Broadway had just let out and it took forever to get an Uber. I called the hostess and she confirmed a late arrival was ok. She said, "I'll see you when you get here." I was not notified or asked about any restrictions or time limits on tables for being late. The Uber arrived and I received a text a half hour after. I confirmed and said, I'm on my way. The traffic was beyond bad and I had the car drop us off not too far away or so I thought. The walk was about 20 minutes longer. When I arrived, Sofia, the hostess, who knew we were running late, asked us to wait or have a drink at the bar. I didn't expect red carpet treatment, especially after being late. however, I did call and let her know that traffic was really bad. She could have explained their late policy if they had one or asked me to rebook for another time. She didn't do either. Instead, when we arrived after running down the streets of the west end, she greeted us with a haphazard smile and you'll need to wait. If the restaurant was full with a line out the door, I would understand the rationale behind her policing. But, Barbuto was half empty with plenty of tables available in the dining room --- there was no line out the door-- no VIPS waiting to get in. Since we ran over 10 blocks to get there, we were gonna eat! We worked for it. Sofia wasn't going to stop us. We took the invitation to sit at the bar and waited another 10 minutes to get served our drinks. What a night! I mean for a slow Sunday night, things were going nowhere and fast. From the hustle and bustle of Broadway's best and brightest to the dark gloomy dining Barbuto room. What a buzz kill on all levels. When we got a chance to order, after seeing hostess Sofia talk to every waiter and member of the team about the encounter I had just had with her at her post (like I said, what an ambiance), our food arrived burnt and cold. The manager who was bartending and wearing multiple hats for a slow night, hard work noted, took the pizza off the check. We didn't want anything taken off the check, we wanted to be treated with courtesy and understanding. If there was a policy about late arrivals, then it should have been explained when I called. Treating tourists (daughter of 1940s Village native) on New Year's Day with a bad attitude and rude service is not only a bad omen for the start of the year but it's a reflection of your brand. Overall, regardless of this property's history or past- its present is a reflection of now.

Decent upscale Italian restaurant, good place to hide from the Whitney tourists. One of the few gnocchi dishes I enjoy. Lovely Lambrusco to drink with your meal.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible.
Great food, equally great service. We were out of towners who don't typically eat at "famed restaurants" so we were a little nervous and our waiter Jeffrey could not have been more accommodating and kind. He took the time to explain the menu, the dishes, and make excellent recommendations. We are not kale fans but he talked us into the kale salad (gently!) and it was THE BEST DECISION. if I lived close I would come back just for it and a glass of wine every day. My husband is a big Jonathan Waxman fan and it was a dream to come sample the food in a laid back atmosphere. The food was elevated but not pretentious- we split a reasonable bottle of wine and felt like every dish was well priced and well received. We had such a memorable, lovely experience that I came home and immediately bought the Barbuto cookbook for him. I am still thinking about the potatoes! We will be coming back on our next NYC visit.

Barbuto is a great restaurant -- it's a well oiled machine, it's a fun, buzzy environment, and the food is good (and exceptional in its simple seasoning that leans heavily on salt and acid). On first glance, though, it's easy to miss what makes Barbuto special. Viewed as part of the modern metropolitan tapestry of "New American" restaurants, each with a kale salad, a few pastas, and a roast chicken, Barbuto would simply seem like one of the good ones. Viewed as sort of a Rosetta Stone for a now-common type of restaurant, it's a fascinating piece of American dining history. Eating there is far more lively though, it is buzzy and sceney in a way that is a little surprising until you remember there are Louboutin and Hermes stores around the corner. By the way, the chocolate budino was our favorite bite of the night.

This is a beautiful restaurant, where the glass walls provide a lovely view of the river and the sunset. We visited Barbuto for dinner before attending the Opera. We arrived early and enjoyed cocktails and appetizers, before our entree. The service we received from Andrea was superb! She was friendly, upbeat and kept aware of our every need. The Salmon pizza was absolutely amazing! (One of the favorites, in a week of wonderful dining experiences). The thin crust is still warm from the oven, when the avocado crema, smoked salmon and caviar are placed atop. The flavors are amazing and then the caviar roe explodes in your mouth!! Fantastic!!The risotto is creamy and delicious, with the delicate flavors of the cheese and spinach merging. We followed this up with coffee and espresso topped vanilla ice cream. Yum!This was a delicious dining experience!! Highly recommended!( our only complaint, and it's a common problem, as the restaurant fills the concrete floors and glass walls reflect the sound and it gets noisy, making civil conversation difficult.)

Really great experience here! The vibe is very trendy, modern. Our waiter was very kind and seemed to care a lot about our experience and had great knowledge of the menu. The focaccia bread was AMAZING, I'm still thinking about it - definitely salty but I love salt so fine with me. Then we had the Kale salad which was delicious and I'm not a huge kale person. The breadcrumbs in the salad were so yummy and different. The salsa verde chicken was delicious as was the tagliatelle. We then ordered the chocolate pudding for dessert and it was very rich. The whipped cream was a great addition to the pudding!! Definitely recommend. Note - it's a quick meal, I didn't feel rushed, but I would not come here if you're looking for a long evening of drinks, food, etc.
