A pleasant surprise
I was meeting some old friends from a former job here, one of whom is originally from Guyana. I arrived earlier than they did, but no matter, I was welcomed by the friendly waitresses. When my friends arrived we left the ordering up to my Guyanese friend. She didn't even need to look at the menu. We had 3 delicious appetizers, pork, duck and calamari, all flavored differently. For main courses we all did curry, goat and duck, served with Dalpuri, which is Guyanese roti. All portions were generous. Drinks were 2 types of shandy, a mildly alcoholic drink resembling a sweet beer. They have a full bar. Service was attentive and pleasant. They also do a brisk take out business. I read some unpleasant reviews so did not know what to expect, but my experience was fine, and delicious. For anyone not familiar with Guyanese cuisine, well, it's a little spicy and the best way I can describe it, is that India crashed into South America and the result is pretty good! This is a local establishment, serving a mainly local clientele, and I definitely recommend coming with someone who knows what to order, as I did.

Bamboo Garden is overpriced and outdated. I went here for dinner with three other people. After entering (think 1970's faux Hawaii) we decided to give it a chance since we traveled from Brooklyn specifically for Guyanese Chinese food. Afterwards, I would only ever recommend this place for takeout maybe. We ordered 2 orders of pholourie which was good and a fish and chips appetizer which was full of bones and lacked any seasoning. For entrรฉes we ordered a ($14) shrimp fried rice, ($10) jerk chicken fried rice which were good but overpriced for the portion sizes. We also got two orders of curry chicken and two orders of Roti skins. The curry chicken was $10 each and an absolute disappointment. It was brought to the table in small bowls that held less than a pint size soup from chinese restaurants. It was a pool of watery curry with two big pieces of potato filling the bottom of the bowl and a little bit a chicken with a lot of little bones and bone shards on top. The curry chicken doesn't come with anything. You have to purchase rice or roti separately for $2 each. It's bad when the kids say no thank you to desert, not from here.
