Amar Boston Reviews from The Last Year
The food- meh
I love Portuguese food and was really excited for the dining experience. The service and atmosphere were outstanding. The food-meh. Maybe it was a bad night for the kitchen. It far from met expectations at that price point.
Overall, average dinner, but we wouldn't come back.
Service was mediocre--after the first of three courses we didn't see our waiter again until we flagged him down for the check. No one came by to ask if we wanted another cocktail, so we didn't have any drinks with our meal. Bread and scallops were great, the rest of the food was good but nothing impressive, which is the expectation for a restaurant trying to be "fine dining". Atmosphere was the best part.
I was totally shocked that the food quality drop so much
I was totally shocked that the food quality drop so much from the last time I was there which was it first opened week. I took my wife out for our anniversary and Mother's Day it was set dinner, ok fine I thought because the food was good last time and my wife said she want to go here. If chef and kitchen staff want to do set dinner at least make it worthwhile and use fresh ingredients not prepared that been in the fridge forever and freezer taste in the meat of seafood. The soup that was offered was mediocre the sweet pea had a ranch sauce which tastes like I can be at the cheese cake factory. The sea beam app with uni disappointment because uni was not fresh sea beam was ok, also the squid was grill good but the chickpea under seem like from can which had a little ok taste. Main dish my wife wagyu that cook 24 hours was a waste of wagyu because it was tough not melt in your mouth and side where no surprises seem like ragu sauce mix with mushrooms and a bland mash which my wife say we could have went to cheese cake factory for this dinner. The lobster main was the worst one freezer taste which seem like did over night and put in freezer and the meat absorbed the freezer burn and mix with an Indian curry which was weird to taste and guess wanted to cover the not fresh lobster taste. The desert the only and service staff is the only reasons I'm actually giving the 3 stars.
Totally lived up to the Hype.
..Fantastic Staff and Foodie quality Cuisine. Definitely worth a night and possible business meeting

Gorgeous dining space with an understated elegance and a spectacular view of the sunset. (The curtains even pull back slowly to reveal a streaky sky at the appropriate time, so it's definitely a highlighted feature of the restaurant!) Service was impeccable (thank you Michael!). The food was good but for the price we paid, I perhaps expected more. Best dishes were the Arroz de Mariscos (shellfish rice - a delicious cross between a paella and a bouillabaisse), and Diver Scallops, which paired well with the bread (which you need to order and comes with sea salt, a very good olive oil, and fresh butter). The Wood-Grilled Beet Salad was good but not too special. The Wild Striped Bass and Kabocha Squash both lacked the flavor and texture I was expecting (the fish was a little chewier and blander than I wanted, and the squash was al dente and lacked the mushy sweetness I was looking for). For dessert, the Serradurra (yuzu-thai basil chantilly, strawberry yuzu sorbet, house made maria cookies) was a delightful choice - light, with the right touch of crunch, sweetness and tang. Together with a cappucino, it made for a satisfying end to the meal.
Food was amazing! The service was absolutely wonderful.
They made sure we felt comfortable with everything we ordered, and explained every dish that we chose. The restaurant was beautifully decorated and the view was gorgeous. They made us feel very special for our anniversary.
Spectacular meal in a very nice building.
We had the tasting menus and wow it was fantastic. Each course amazing. Service friendly and efficient. Drinks great too. If you don't mind splurging try the place out near Back Bay station.

The dinner was nothing short of spectacular! We had a great experience, our primary server Michael was attentive, he gave great recommendations and made the experience a fantastic one. We shared the scallops and the Jamon Iberico. Both were superb. For our appetizer course she had the shellfish custard while I tried the quail. Again, both were outstanding dishes. For our entrees I had the cod "Gomes de sa " and she had the Pekin Duck. The cod was perfectly seasoned and cooked to the exact right temperature. My only issue was I would have liked more of the potato as it was beautifully prepared. Liz loved the Duck as Well. We had a bottle of Portuguese red which was reccomended by the Somelier. I can't recall the name but it was in the $160 range. One of the best places I've been to lately!!!!
The restaurant is absolutely stunning with great view out
The restaurant is absolutely stunning with great view out the window. There's about 20 tables and plenty waitstaff. I like the appetizers better than the main dishes. And food is definitely overpriced. Diver scallops and uni toast are pretty good, although not something that you couldn't get at other restaurants. The duck rice recommended by our waitress was a huge disappointment. The codfish was also very bland, nothing wrong with the taste but didn't taste good either. The bread (Pao) is a total scam. It's just normal bread that you get for free at other places. Food wise, nothing is special here, don't expect too much. Service was great except that our waitress spilled wine on the floor as she walked towards us.
Decor was gorgeous and the staff was exceptional.
They checked up on us a lot, were very professional but also warm and friendly. Dirty martini and Pao cocktail were delicious. However for the price, the food was also just ok. The sourdough bread was probably the best thing we got. The sea bass was just ok, as was the bluefin tuna. For an upscale place with high prices for small portions, I expected a much more flavorful and complex dish. The asparagus was also quite bland. Again, the ambiance was excellent and the staff definitely improved the experience but overall the food was disappointing and not worth the price.
Went to Amar with my husband for a good meal and drinks.
The ambiance was nice and the views beautiful. The host was not welcoming when we first got there. What was most disappointing was the food. We ordered the mushroom and quail to start and the cod and duck as entrees. Only took a couple bites of each because they were that bad and so bland. Let our server know. She was extremely sweet and asked us if we didn't like it. I can't believe especially at such a high price point how bad the food was. So many better restaurants in Boston don't waste your money.
Amar in Boston
Beautiful but expensive restaurant. Ambience was very nice but I can’t say the same thing for the food. Chef was very generous with salt and almost all the dishes were salty and in small portion.Pao, a house made sourdough bread, has good texture but tasted salty.Carabinero shrimps came with two shrimps that cost $36 with little meat and the head tasted fishy and not fresh.Beet salad was fresh and nice. Cod fish Gomes de sa was tender and salty. Striped bass again tasted fishy and salty. Chocolate layer cake was satisfying and delicious but we had better Portuguese egg custard at Air Portugal Lounge in Lisbon Airport.

The Amar has an exquisite high ceiling interior and besides the food and service, that is definitely what you are paying for. The service was great, friendly, and efficient. And the appetizers and desert were also really good. However, I was a little disappointed in the cod fish main course. It was quite hard and tasted more toward a grilled fish than cod. But nonetheless I had a good experience, especially with the hospitality I received right when I exited the 17th floor lifts.
Amazing ambiance meets delectable fine dining cuisine right
Amazing ambiance meets delectable fine dining cuisine right in the heart of Boston. The haute cuisine here is innovative and scrumptious. Amar is one of the best fine dining restaurants in Massachusetts, for sure. It's hard to book a table here though. The Longbar at Raffles is also fantastic and definitely easier to get into.
Worth the wait! By which I mean, despite setting an alarm
Worth the wait! By which I mean, despite setting an alarm to book a reservation on the morning one month out from our desired date on Resy, we could still only get a 9:00 table. We showed up at 8:20 or so, thinking to get a drink at Blind Duck upstairs or the Long Bar, only too find there was a long wait at both. Blind Duck, the speakeasy, does not take reservations. We were told the wait was 2-3 hours. Nothing "easy" about that! Meanwhile, Amar does not have a bar in the restaurant. We asked the hostess if they happened to have our table ready early; she said no, and I completely understood that so we went back upstairs to wait on a cushy sofa that overlooks the restaurant. All the while I could see this nice corner table open, and I kept thinking someone else had it reserved even though no one came. Went back down at 9, and lo and behold, she brings us to that same table. Which we apparently could have had at 8:30 pm. LOL. It gets better from here. Our server, Sarah, with a constant twinkle in her eye that seemed to suggest food fun was ahead, took great care of us all night. We started with a cocktail with Rittenhouse rye, amaro, and some fig reduction. Well balanced and refreshing. Courses were paced perfectly. We each had one thing from the small column: bread and uni toast, one thing from the middle column: Maitake mushrooms and grilled quail, and each ended with the bigger items from the third column: duck with risotto. Don't judge us; it was after 9 and we were pretty hungry by then... anyway, the courses are not huge. Uni toast was a delicious treat. The bread is a nice homemade boule served with butter, sea salt, and Portuguese olive oil. My friends, dip it in the olive oil! It is very special. Maitake mushrooms came in a broth they poured over tableside, and the quail, which was rolled into medallions, was a standout. We also liked the duck. We had two glasses of Portuguese wine, one white, one red, and both paired really well with our progression of food. The dessert menu has nice choices but we opted out. I would definitely go back again for a special occasion and maybe try the pasteis de nata!
This place is he worse place you can think in Boston.
I went there and I asked for chef taste menu the food was really bad and super pricey it supposed be 3 course, and the time between each course was over 20 minutes totally unacceptable. I wouldn't recommend anybody to go there. Nao recomendo a nada.
Everything was absolutely exquisite.
Because I'm Portuguese I was holding my breath on some of the options, but everything surpassed expectations. Our favorite item was the uni toast (which I had never had before). It was so great we ordered it twice.
Food was wonderful, the services was on point and the vibe
